OT books.google.com

I had read article about this but was just reminded when reading an issue of the New Yorker this morning that Google has a beta site where they are cataloging the contents of every book.

This isn't new information but since Google Books is not listed on the Google Toolbar many here may not be aware of it.

Just passing this on.

It might be a great resource but it's another example of Google/UTube using copyrighted material without the author's permission and without reimbursing him/her. As I understand it, if the author/publisher complains, they'll remove it. Until then they assume it's their right to make money off the content. UTube is filled with unauthorized copyrighted content.

Google is making money from advertising, not content.

I think the days of information on dead trees is slowly coming to an end and no one has informed the publishers.

I won't read a book online nor will I buy a book. I just go to the library. I look at Google Books as a reference tool and not a reading library.

Why would people go to the site if it didn't contain content? Google can charge the rates that it does for ads because the site is viewed by x millions of eyeballs each day. Google is all about eyeballs. Eyeballs = revenue.

Just because you won't read a book online doesn't mean someone else won't. It's irrelevant to the fact that Google/UTube plays fast and loose with copyright laws. Why is Viacom is suing Google for $1 billion?

Why is Viacom is suing Google for $1 billion?

For the same reason Willy Sutton robbed banks - that's where the money is.

What will happen will be the same deal worked out when we first bought blank cassettes and CDs, a portion of the sale will go to publishers. No one is going to stop the digitation of printed material. You might have to wait a year for the latest John Grisham 'book', but it will be digitized.

Info on the lawsuit.

The lawsuit came nearly six weeks after Viacom demanded that YouTube remove more than 100,000 unauthorized clips after several months of talks over licensing arrangements broke down. YouTube agreed at the time to comply and said it cooperates with all copyright holders to remove programming as soon as the company is notified.

But since then, Viacom has identified more than 50,000 additional unauthorized clips, Viacom spokesman Jeremy Zweig said.

In a statement, Viacom lashed out at YouTubes business practices, saying it has built a lucrative business out of exploiting the devotion of fans to others creative works in order to enrich itself and its corporate parent Google.

Viacom said YouTubes business model, which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws.

Viacom said YouTube has avoided taking the initiative to curtail copyright infringement on its site, instead shifting the burden and costs of monitoring the video-sharing site for unauthorized clips onto the victims of its infringement.

In a statement, Google said it believed the courts will agree that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders.

-------

GOOGLE/UTUBE provide the mechanisms for people to distribute copyrighted material by the boatloads. They then force the copyright holder to go out and search for material that infringes on the copyright and petition Google/Utube to remove it.

Google will be allowed to break the rules on the front end because a lot of folks are getting paid in the process including the very same companies from which they are allegedly stealing i.e. shareholders.
