Warthog
Maybe I'm late to the game, but I found this website that will convert Google and Youtube videos to avi files and download them to your PC. Just copy the Youtube/Google url and convert. I have a feeling I will be wasting a LOT of time saving my favorites to my PC. Online File Converter Not even any software to download..it's web-based. Also, here's a free file converter so you can convert your newly-minted avi files to mpeg4's for iPod viewing: Free iPod Converter Now we can all enjoy our favorite Youtube videos even when we're not connected to the internet. Or, burn all your favorites to a DVD. Enjoy...

A String
If you're using Firefox, there is a plugin you can get, called Grease Monkey. You plug the YouTube script into that, then you can download the videos, right from their pages by right clicking. S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
Vixy doesn't seem to work any more. It can't get to the YouTube server. I wonder if YouTube blocked it? A String
Never used Vixy. I use Grease Monkey and a script called "YouTube to Me". Still working fine. Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music

fantasticsound
I've been using the Video Downloader add-on for Firefox. But it simply hooks you up with the YouTube url. I also use the DownThemAll add-on as a webparser/downloader. I have to manually change the YouTube file to "video title.flv". I was watching on a free flv player, but I've been trying out a few video/audio converters and switched the videos to WinMedia10 friendly files. I'll have to check out Grease Monkey. It would save me a few steps and all the time that takes. Thanks, Craig! It's easiest to find me on Facebook. A String
I'm sorry Neil, I guess I made it sound better then it was. It still only downloads the flash video file (.flv). You can view it with any free flash video viewer, or convert it to avi, mpg etc. with a conversion program. I just like this one, because it puts a bar at the top of the screen when you are viewing the video. All you do is right click on the bar and pick "Save As", and it saves the file. Sas, You can get Greasemonkey here http://www.greasespot.net/ Once Grease Monkey is installed, you simply click on the link I added below, and choose install. The scripts will then install into Grease Monkey and the next time you go to YouTube and choose a video, you will see the "Save As" bar at the top. All you do is right click on the bar and pick "Save As". The script is called "Youtube to me": http://www.joshkinberg.com/blog/files/youtube_to_me.user.js Here is the one for Google video: http://www.joshkinberg.com/blog/files/google_video_getter2.user.js Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music

S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
OK. I give up. Do I need to rename these files to something or give them another extension or something like that? That just created a file on my desktop called get_video, and I can't do anything with it. A String
You need a free Flash Video Player. Like this one: http://www.flashguru.co.uk/downloads/flvplayer.zip There are a ton out there. just rename the get_video file to "The Rolling Stones - Monkey Man.flv" or whatever the video is. just add the .flv. Then, it will open up in the flash video player. There are also a ton of programs out there that will convert the file from an flv to an avi or mpg etc. So it will play in a regular player. I even have a program that will convert them to DVD format, so I can burn them onto a DVD to watch. S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
Ahhh..OK. That's what I needed to know. I have Macromedia Flash player, but it wouldn't pick the file up. Thanks! fantasticsound
Yeah, Sas, that was what I was doing in Down Them All. Manually changing the file name before downloading. I installed Grease Monkey this morning and was wondering how I was supposed to know the script to install. Thanks for the links. I'll see if it's better than Video Downloader, which has been a bit hinkey. Many times it says the service is down. Usually I can reopen the program, but it's been frustrating. And it doesn't handle Google Video, so thanks! It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
A String
The script is within Firefox so the service can't go down. If you can see the video, you can download it. Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music

S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq.
Wen I download as an .avi, I can only get the audio and not the picture. That's because .avi stands for "all video invisible". You need to download as .avv (all video visible). Actually, I just made that up and it's a big fat lie. I don't know why that's happening to you like that. I have no idea. skipclone 1
You may need a DivX installer, that allows you to see .avi among other formats, on your pc. You can dowload the codecs free. Someone told me that there are separate ones for video and audio, not sure about that but I had the opposite problem before with a tv series download, video and no sound. It could explain the problem. mlh
Wen I download as an .avi, I can only get the audio and not the picture. An AVI file can have many different types of video. right click on the video, select properties. see what it tells you about the video type, maybe a 4 CC code it sounds like you need a filter/decompressor for the specific type of video that is in that avi file. this is all very cool info btw. A String
Yup, sounds like the codecs to me. There is a great little program call "G Spot", that lets you "see" which codecs were used, and whether you have them installed or not. Easiest way to see if that's the problem. I'm using the VideoDownloader plug-in to Firefox, it works like you describe for Grease Monkey but you click an icon in the Firefox status bar (in my case, right next to the IETab and AdBlock Plus status bar icons). I just wish I could name the file *before* its completely downloaded, but that's not a huge deal. fantasticsound
b3 john, you can rename prior to download.. but only if you use the add-on I mentioned before, Down Them All. When I use Video Downloader I click the icon as you mentioned. I click the link button in the popup box and it asks if I want to download using download manager, Down Them All or DTA one click (which uses the last settings to download this link). I choose Down Them All and it provides a box with options for where the file will be saved and how it will be saved. The default is *name*.*ext*, which grabs the file name and extension from the link. As you know, this is not what you want. I manually change it to whatever name I choose followed by .flv. Down Them All is a great parsing/downloading add-on. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd

Actually, that reminded me of this book I saw the other day, full of lies you can tell little kids. My favourite was, "When they have a lot of work to do, bees take on flies as temps". Here's one that's fun: Go into a music store and find some young kid working behind the counter. Ask to see an A-440 tuning fork. When he hands you one, strike it and put it up to your ear. Get a real thoughtful look on your face and do it 2 or 3 more times. Then ask for another tuning fork. Do the same routine with that one. Then strike both of them and hold one up to each ear. Then hand them both to him (or her) and say "Either this one is about 1/2 cent flat or this one is about 1/2 cent sharp, but I can't tell which. You listen and tell me which one is right."
