BillWelcome Home Studios
Keeps the strap out of the way of the on-board pickup controls. LiveMusic
Hmmm, I don't see how the strap wrapped around the top of the lower bout has anything to do with the pickup controls, which are visible on the neck side of the upper bout. I don't get it. > > > [ Live! ] < < <
fantasticsound
Boys... For whatever reason, it appears John Prine has a strip of e-tape on his guitar. Maybe he had a momentary inspiration to do up his instrument like EVH but changed his mind. I'm 99% sure it's not a strap. A strap tied across that line would instantly slip off the lower bout. Zuben
The strap is there to angle the guitar towards the body. Makes it easy to see and play the neck. fantasticsound
That sounds ridiculous, guys. You're telling me that John Prine needs to see the neck more easily using a strap? The man's been playing for more decades than I've been alive, he's strumming virtually everything... I'd have to hear it from his own mouth to believe that's the case. fantasticsound
For one thing, his guitar isn't leaning in from the top at all. And he leans over to look at the fretboard. You're silly people. Zuben
Neil, I can't comment on John's reasons but that is what the strap is for. I'll post some websites that sell them when I get to my office computer. Zuben
Neil, just a note - As for looking at the frets, one the best session guitar players I know, Fred Tacket, barely takes his eyes off the frets while he is playing. This is a man who toured with Miles Davis, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Webb, Little Feat, Lowell George... has recorded with - Allman Brothers, Greg Allman, Rory Block, Jackson Browne, Glen Campbell, Eric Carmen, Valerie Carter, Judy Collins, Rita Coolidge, Bob Dylan, Lowell George, Vince Gill, Rickie Lee Jones, Nicolette Larson, Juice Newton, Aaron Neville, Van Dyke Parks, Bonnie Raitt, Lionel Richie, Leo Sayer, Carly Simon, Boz Scaggs, Rod Stewart, Harry Nilsson, Bob Seger, Ringo Starr, Tom Waits, the Wallflowers, and Jimmy Webb He must have 50 gold and platinum albums stored at his house. This guy even played with Hendrix STILL STARES AT THE FRETBOARD! BillWelcome Home Studios
Note the strap around the top of the lower bout. What is that for? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp1mIYJNKWQ Oh, I see what you guys are talking about. Must have been half asleep this morning, as I thought that we were talking about the fact that the -other- end of his strap goes around to the back of the neck block. Sorry about that. I've never seen this before, but logically it would appear to hold the guitar more perpendicular to the ground. If the neck end of the strap does hook up to the back of the neck block, the face of the guitar could want to twist downward. I know, I've had most all of my guitars hooked up this way since about 1969. Some hang perfectly, others not so perfectly. fantasticsound
But does he flatpick or fingerpick, or does he just strum mostly open chords, Zuben? Looking at the fretboard isn't much of an issue for someone strumming open chords. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Zuben
Neil, John use to be a pretty decent picker but that was many years ago. I honestly haven't seen him, with the exception of some TV, in close to 20 years. (man, where has the time gone) He was an incredible writer. Not the greatest singer but he had an aura about him that was infectious. Personally, I don't think he ever achieved the fame he deserved. I also think that affected his career over the years. I have one great memory - he was doing a quick practice with Bonnie Raitt during a sound check the day of the show. They were doing "Angel from Montgomery". He kept changing lyrics and vocal expressions Had the whole place on the floor laughing. They never did get through one complete run of the song but pulled it off that night flawlessly.
