dohhhhh6
Hello! I'm trying to hook my guitarist up with some more good pedals, so I figured I'd ask the guitar sages here for some advice. My guitarist has a Epiphone Les Paul and a Peavey 1x12 Studio Pro. His pedals so far are a TS7 Tubescreamer, Dunlop Crybaby, Boss chorus, and Boss DD-6. We play jam music, so naturally, Ben needs some more sustain. So I was wondering if you guys can recommend some good compressor that are around $100 for sustain? He's thinking about getting an Analogman Comprosser, but those are so expensive, so he's wanting some other options. On the otherhand, a Leslie speaker imitation would be really sweet, so are there any good recommendations for Uni-vibe style pedals around $100? I've read some reviews on the Dunlop Uni-vibe and it seems to suck, so maybe you guys have played a pedal that I haven't heard of? Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help!Tim In Skynyrd We Trust
Dr. Ellwood
Yes, look at the Edward the Compressor by Marshall, I can't think of a UniVibe type effect for 100 bucks that would be worth buying.,,,,, KLONK HERE: http://www.zzounds.com/item--MSHED1 http://www.thestringnetwork.com
Soulrock
Although the UniVibe was originally intended to be a Leslie sim, it really sounds nothing like a Leslie. It has it's own unique sound, which I happen to love. I'd recomend Voodoo Labs MicroVibe. They go for about $150 and sound fantastic. I have this pedal and love it, the only drawback is that it does not have a foot controller, but I can live with that. I saw Robin Trower(the UniVibe king) a few months ago, and was using a Fulltone Deja 2. It's quite a bit more expensive, but I am thinking about getting one. Can't beat the MicroVibe for the price though. Line 6 and Boss(I believe) both make Leslie simulators, if you are lookimg for more of a "real" Leslie sound. picker
the Deja Vibe II is really good. It costs a lot, but you ca hear why when you A/B them with cheaper pedals. COmpressors are funny beasts. Buy a cheaper one, like the orange Digitech one (about $60) till you see if it's gonna work for him. Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else. rgordon83
I play jam music too. I have an analogman comprossor and it rocks! it is my favorite pedals. It is modeled after the old Ross compressors. It is really a great pedal. It does not have that "pumping" sound that some cheap compressors (like a boss for example) has. It cost me $175 used on Ebay. Well worth it. Tell him to go with the analogman! I'd say it is WELL worth the extra $75. Just save up a little longer.... (p.s. Trey has an analogman comprosser if that means anything to him as a jamband fan) -Ross The Guitar Resource Fender Blues junior Amps
BillWelcome Home Studios
I use the Fulltone Deja2. Much more than $100, though. Scott Fraser
I have a Barber Tone Press compressor & it's my current fave. Very natural, doesn't mangle the attack or suck the dynamics out of your signal.I love real Leslies but I've never heard a Uni-Vibe or any other pedal that sounds even remotely close to the real thing. Analog Mike makes some of the best sounding pedals on the market. I'd recommend the BiComprossor, although it's more expensive, and there's a several month waiting list to get one. It's a Ross clone and an Orange Squeezer side-by-side in one box. If that don't get you there, nothing will. "The Torture Never Stops"
Dr. Ellwood
I use the UltraVibe by Sweet Electronics, here is a Hendrix tune I'm using it on: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=372411&songID=4439424 http://www.thestringnetwork.com
otherstar
I've had good luck with Boss CS-3 (http://www.zzounds.com/item--BOSCS3) and a semi-hollow body guitar into a tube amp. Trey plays a hollowbody guitar (it's not a semi-hollow, Languedoc says it's built more like a violin than a guitar) and that is going to give him a more mellow sound also. Interestingly enough, if you go to Trey's website: http://www.treyanastasio.com/treysrig/ you see the two Analogman TS-9's, but not a compressor of any kind anymore. His tone seems more gritty as of late, and that could explain it. Turn me over, I'm done on this side...
dohhhhh6
Wow, thanks for the suggestions! I've been doing some research on the Leslie thing, and actually, he wants the Uni-vibe. I listened to the clips on MF, and the Micro Vibe seems to be the best, so I'll recommend that to him. As for the compressor, I think I'll make him try getting an actual tube amp first, see if that gives him sustain, or it's off to buy an Analogman. Thanks ellwood, we actually play Hey Joe (it's actually our band name for the moment), so that version was awesome to listen to. Also, thanks to everyone else for the advice! UnderTheGroove
I would suggest he get a tube amp first. It will have a much bigger impact on his overall tone. I'm using a Sweet Sound Mojo Vibe. Over his budget, but well worth the money. Summer Sale: Save 20% on Jam Tracks or Exotica. Save 30% when you buy both.
