What strings do you play?

Started on GHS Boomers #10's when i fist started, then switched to 11 gauge D'Addario strings. They were better than GHS (at least i thought so). Recently i switched to DR "Tite-Fit" gauge 11 ( saw that trey plays them, then i happened to see them when i was at stringsandbeyond.com and i gave them a shot). I really really love them. Really easy to bend for 11 gauge. Great tone. the works....

What brand/gauge strings do you currently play? what have you played in the past. why did you choose one over the other?

Use Ernie Ball Hybrids (orange package .009-.046) for years now, and I guess it's because (1) I can't hear the difference on electric strings at all [in fact, the guitar dude at GC gave me a free pack of DR 9s with the coating and all that, but I just can't tell a difference], (2) I love the hybrid gauge, and (3) considering almost every guitarist I like uses Ernie Ball strings, ranging from punk bands to John Petrucci to Angus Young, I'm pretty sure I'm safe.
Shut up and play.

Can you also not hear the difference between string gauges? or just brands? I got much warmer, thicker tone when i switched to 1 gauge. a lot of "shredders" don't like such high gauge b/c it effects their speed. But if the Jazzers can do it on 12's and 13's i think that it can't be that hard. But 9's ARE really easy for bending and such....

I use 8's, and I'm not fussy on the brand. I like doing aggressive bends and speed playing just not possible(for me, at least) with heavy strings. Tone can be dialed in with the gizmos at our disposal today, and I don't really buy into that old school hype with modern equipment.
Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!

10s for me on most of my guitars, currently trying 11s on the jazzmaster for surf. Do they make a difference in tone? I dont know, just trying them cause thats what i hear surfers use. SRV used 13s, Billy Gibbons used 8s, can you hear the tone difference? I cant.

well it's comparing apples and oranges. But i gaurantee if you heard SRV playing 9's V.S. his 13's you could tell a big difference...

I dont know, the more i play and study other people, like Jimmy Page for instance i think its in the hands and their technique. Some guys can pic up anything and make it sound huge.

I hear that. I guess it also has a lot to do with what you play. If a jazzer puts 9's on his archtop and plays clean through a roland or fender or whatever, it def. won't have the same warmth as his 13's. But i gues if you use effects, diff. amps, etc with an electric you can compensate for light strings. But i think it will come through more if you play clean. Just my thoughts...

Fumbly,

I have a Cuz in LA who just graduated from USC and he is in the msuic industyr. He is getting into movie scores and such. He composes. Maybe you should netowrk with him. his page is http://www.myspace.com/jonathansadoff

He is a hell of a guitar player, although his myspace stuff does not show it. He's more into indy stuff now, but he used to rock pretty hard....

What do you think of the Elixers?

I like them..the tone seems good and they last forever. They feel good also....I am kinda easy about stuff like that...the main thing I notice right away is tension and intonation. If those aspects are okay I am usually fine with it. I don't know for sure since I have never tried it but I wonder how many players could pick out their preferred brand/set in a blindfold test? I mean how different are Ernie Ball .010-whatever going to feel from D'Addario's, Boomers etc as long as each string size is the same from set to set. Granted I always use GHS Boomers now, but I was a D'Addario guy for years, before that Ernie Ball, before that Piccato. But it is habit mostly.

I must say I used to be able to feel the twist in the old D'Addario in the plain strings...the Swedish Lock Twist steel they called it. I started thinking they were breaking on me prematurely so I switched.

Who knows. Anyone done or heard of a blindfold test on strings?

Usually E-A-D-G-B-E. In that order. :smirk: (Well somebody had to say it...)

I just put the Elixer's (Nanoweb Lights) on my Martin a couple weeks ago. I gotta say I hope longevity claims are there because the great tone isn't IMO. Strike that, poor tone for a long time doesn't sound so great. I think I'm just going to go back to normal Martin strings like I used to use. Like about a $13 mistake or a $13 lesson or something. I mean, long life is great but its not like changing strings is difficult.

On electric guitar I find I go through a lot of high E strings if I play 9's. I play chords entirely too wild sometimes.

What about Nickel verses Nickel Plated strings? GP mag has an article about how the pure Nickel doesn't give the distort and has a warmer tone to them...Easier on the frets too... Thoughts?

fender bullets are nickle like em

but they are not a bright as D'Addario

Why do you lay down? I say that it beats standing up! whats got you feeling so down? I hold up my empty cup!

D'addario 10's, used to use Ernie ball SS but found them not have as good a tone and didnt last as long, also partial to the Gibson re-issue strings for my LP, dont last long but do give a lovely warm tone,

"Ramp" I think they are right the nickel re-issues i use are warmer and do seem a bit softer, feel a little easier to play. i like them (Orange packs) try them out.

I play my strat using super bullets but I want to try those Gibson re-issues... I go with 9's ... any thoughts on the sound and feel of those on a Strat?

I have an assortment...GHS, D'Addario, Everly, Fender, Ernie Ball...

It depends on which guitar I'm stringing and what type of tones I want.

Has anyone ever used or heard of the Burns (Bison) pure nickel strings that are wound around a round core instead of a hex core?

They are made in London.

"Ramp" havent tried those re-issue strings on a strat as i am so unlucky i dont have a strat (how unlucky am i !!!!!) , but i have had them on my Godin freeway which is the my most strat like guitar and i would say they warmed it up tonally but i would say the guitar in genral was a little less bright. (but i do find the Godin a touch on the treble side anyhow, so probably just balanced it up nicely)

I really do like them, my biggest complaint would be with "heavy" use they havent a great life length.

Worth a $ to see if you like them
