bsd1965
It had been quite a while since I bought any cds so I hit our cool local record store yesterday (yes, I still call them record stores ...old habits die hard, but this one actually still has a nice selection of used LPs so the moniker fits). From the used bins I picked up "Exile on Main Street" (been a Stones fan for almost 25yrs and somehow never owned it) and a Clapton cd I had never seen nor heard of called "Me and Mr. Johnson" where he does a bunch of Robert Johnson stuff. Not bad for 6 bucks each. Looking at the "import" section my curiosity was piqued by a Gary Moore cd called "Blues for Greeny" digitally remastered. I had heard of GM before but was not familiar with any of his stuff so I picked that up to and man, am I glad I did. Just ripping blues guitar for the entire disc. I highly recommend it if that's your thing. Anybody else been getting anything new lately?
Guitar55
Great choices! "Exiles" is one of my all-time favorites. I've heard of the EC disc, but never heard it. "Blues for Greeny" is not a typical Gary Moore recording. By natrue, he's more of a metal player, who has stepped out to record a few high-energy Blues-Rock CDs (Still Got The Blues, After Hours). "Blues for Greeny" is his tribute to his friend and mentor, Peter Green. On this CD, Moore goes to great lengths to restrain himself and play more in Green's "pure" Blues style and he does an admirable job.
LeftyBlues
There's so much good music on Exile it's a must-have for any true Stones fan. Clapton has a CD/DVD combo of his Robert Johnson stuff, the DVD is really cool if you can find it. I just stopped Friday and bought my 2nd Deborah Coleman CD, name escapes me and it's pouring rain or I'd run out to the car and check it. Deborah plays some smoking hot blues, if she's ever in your area go see her live, trust me!!!! L.B. I was born at night but I wasn't born last night... Actually, since Best Buy and the rest of the big box stores as well as the Internet sell most of the music nowadays it seems like you hardly see a store like this anymore. I've been to the Odeon, I saw that King Crimson reunion thing there about 10yrs ago (can't remember what they were calling themselves at the time, but it was everyone from KC ....Thrak maybe?...I'm off to Wiki). The Powerhouse was a great place for entertainment but the Flats are pretty much done now. In fact there is a big legal battle right now as the city is taking most of the property that housed many of the concert venues in an eminent domain move and giving it to some developers. Too bad, I used to love walking down the strip, you could hear a different band blaring out of each venue, pick the one that sounded good and walk right in (some, like the Odeon, did require tickets but most were no cover). My bad, they were back as King Crimson, the album was called Thrak.

Can I call it blues-metal? It certainly doesn't sound like anything else. Anyway you slice it, remember, one man's blues is another man's heavy metal, so whatever. Shut up and play. I remember loving the way the stage was set up, they had floor monitors place all over the stage! and when not in use they would slide back into the floor!! so you could set up just about any way you wanted and there was going to be pleanty of monitors and large one too! Great lighting an sound there!! Im sorry to hear the whole Flats is getting messed up with stupid politics!! We did that whole Power House thing down there, we even went out on one of those large barges and played a couple of times in the river..that was a real blast! I hope the people of Clevland will stop them wrecking a great area of the city!!!! http://www.thestringnetwork.com
bsd1965
ellwood wrote: Im sorry to hear the whole Flats is getting messed up with stupid politics!! I guess the way I wrote that was a little misleading. Most of the buisinesses had closed up or moved over the last several years as the entertainment center shifted several blocks away from the Flats. The Flats (particularly the East side of the river, the side the Odeon was on) was quickly becoming known as a place to go if you wanted to get mugged. So many of the places in the eminent domain issue have been vacant. I still wish it wasn't happening but I didn't mean to imply that they were taking thriving buisinesses away. The West side of the river (where The Powerhouse is) still has a few thriving buisinesses.
Dr. Ellwood
Oh ok! well that's not as bad but still I remember going out on breaks and watching the boats going up and down the river with all the twinkley lights on them and the reflections on the river and people all over the place in private boats pulling up by the Power House landing, docking and comming in the club! it was a great place and area to play and tons of cool resturants to go to on the river. I'm not familiar with the new area, it can't have the charm that the river clubs had. http://www.thestringnetwork.com

I'll tell you what, the Flats (like most things) was way cooler in the 70's, before the big boys saw the money to be made. There was just a handful of smallish clubs that had live music seven nights a week but the scene cooked. Sigh..... http://www.smokedsalmonband.com/exile/exile1.jpg
