Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

My guitarist wants a new amp/tone. He plays a strat, and our band is a funk outfit playing Tower of power, James Brown etc..

What would be a good choice for him to get the right tone for the band? All suggestions welcome including effect chain etc.. when ive got some ideas from you guys i'll take him down guitar centre and we'll try some out..

He could probably find this out for himself if he wasnt such a pot smoking layabout...

respec' from Keyboard corner

Matt

Hi MaFunk! and welcome to the Guitar Forum! Well glad to see you guys are doing funk! My band loves funk, I will show you what I use for effects I hope it helps. Here are three tunes we did live so you can get an idea of how my rig sounds. I included a pic of my peddle board so you can see the effects I'm using. His Strat is FINE and great for funk, that's what I use along with a few others, anyway we can discuss it and the other guys will be in here too to help: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=372411&songID=3768154

Ellwood

Just had a listen to your band - sounds fantastic and i like your tone.. reminds me of a motown/blues brother cover band i used to love here in the UK many moons ago.. good stuff.

Im gonna suggest he goes with a fender twin as i originally had mentioned this to him and i believe it will give a monster clean tone..?

If he does drop the dough for the Twin he wont have much left for his effect chain, so what would you recommend as a bare minimum for a solid funk guitar sound effectwise? (He already has Wah pedal)

Thanks for your time

ellwood's our resident rock star. But... I have pictures of him being forced to go grocery shopping by the Mrs. on Sundays. LOL!

The Twin Reverb is the cleanest valve amp you can buy. If it ain't... it's damned close.

It's loud too!

Thanks MATT...I would suggent maybe a litte chorus and a bit of slap back echo on some tunes. I hardley ever play with out a touch of echo with the slap back set to almost overlap the original note, so it's more of a lengthing of the tone rather than a separate identical repeat.

Yeah, keep the Strat and just get an amp.

You could even go with a cheaper Fender tube amp like the Hot Rod series and he'd still have some good gain at his finger tips.

The Hot Rod series comes in 1/12, 2/12, & 4/10 versions, so he can have his choice of size & price.

After that, he'd have plenty of money for a chorus & delay as mentioned above, which is good advice.

For the amp, I would suggest a Fender Deluxe Reverb Reissue. It's really loud enough to play clean for club gigs, and not obnoxiously loud otherwise. It has a great tone, too, with either a Strat or humbucker-equipped guitar, and doesn't cost as much as the Twin.

For effects, he'll probably need an overdrive pedal of some sort. A good one is the Visual Sound Route 66 pedal. It has a good sounding Tube Screamer-type overdrive and a compressor built into it, so it does double duty. It goes for about $140. If that isn't in at the store you go to, look into a Boss Dyna Drive. They are new, but ought to be in stores by now, I've seen them at the Guitar Center here in KC for about $120. They are more touch-sensitive than a lot of overdrives out there(the sound cleans up nicely if you back the guitar's volume knob back a little or pick more softly, and if you lay into it you can get a pretty killer "Who's That Lady" sound, with a phase shifter).

As far as a phase shifter goes, the MXR Phase 90 is a good one that usually available for about $70 street price. If you can find a Univibe clone of some sort, you can get a more Hendrix-y tone, and they tend to sound a bit more interesting than a straight phase shifter. They also tend to be a bit more expensive, too. The least expensive ones I know of are the Voodoo Labs Microvibe and the Dunlop Rotovibe, both for about $150.

If you want an echo pedal, the Digitech X Series Digidelay is about as good as any, and has a neat tap tempo feature. You can pick them up for about $100. They also make a pretty decent compressor pedal for guitar you can get for about $60 if you haggle a bit.

I can't think of any other effects that a funk guitarist might need, except maybe a chorus, and those are everywhere for pretty reasonable prices. If he's gonna run a lot of pedals, you may want to get a multi-output power supply for them. The Dunlop DC Brick is pretty good, and goes for about $100.

That ought to get you in the ball park. Dang, dude, you must be a pretty good guy to do this guy's shopping for him. I guess it's a holdover from when you played guitar or something...

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

Cheers guys,

Picker - The only reason im doing it for him is that he's such a stoner he will never get up off his ass and do it himself lol.. and i spose if im honest i never really shook the guitar bug when i decided keys were the main axe for me...

I may be helping with the shopping but i'll leave the paying up to him i think..
