Zephyr
Well, GAS levels are high, and im itchin to try some new pedals. So.... what are some of your favorite overdrive pedals? What do you like about them?, what don't you like about them? And I think we all know Ellwood's answer is going to be his Klon Never argue with an idiot. mdrs
Hey Zeph....first....NICE AVATAR If you can make your overdrive sound like that guy, you've got it nailed. I'm waiting on my Klon. I ordered, and paid. Then, it's a 12 week waiting period, will Bill builds it!! I think I have about two months yet before I'll have it in hand. I've tried many many OD pedals. Most of them are safely filed in my closet!! About a month ago (maybe a bit longer) I bought a Fulltone OCD. It is far and away the best I've used. And, the more I've used it, the more I like it. It is the most transparent OD pedal I've used. You can get your amp into overdriven tone without really changing the amps true sound. I can plug into my little '65 blackface Fender Champ thru the OCD, and channel Angus Young, Billy Gibbons, you name it. It's really amazing. And, you can get that overdriven tone without making your ears bleed. Here's the thread on which we discussed all this about a month ago; https://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1701391/page/0/fpart/1 I suspect that the Klon will be very similiar, meaning great transparent OD. Once I get my Klon, I plan on rolling out ALL of my OD pedals (I may need a wheelbarrow LOL) and posting some sort of a review. If I get real ambitious, I'll try to record some sound clips of each. We'll see..... Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. revolead
I'm a fan of the OCD as well, though I will say, for now, it is too redundant to justify buying a new one. Definitely one of the best overdrives I've heard, and at half the price of a BJF Baby Blue (also a very good pedal), as far as the boutique market is concerned, it's outstanding. However, I have to give my favorite to the Barber Electronics LTD. I got one for Christmas, and every time I drive home to Colorado Springs (I'm at college about 90 miles north where the noise complaints are high and common sense is low), I'm insanely amazed at how great it sounds and how perfect it is for my tastes. I'm a fan of light, mild overdrives and more gainy distortions. It even sounds good when accompanied with a distortion pedal in front of it (think pregain and postgain settings on a tube amp). But if you want that broken up '65 Deluxe Reverb or '59 Bassman tone without having to spend a fortune (they're only $120 new), I do think the LTD is a very, very good pedal. Also worth mentioning in the price-for-performance category, I would put the Keeley BD-2. It's a great pedal and one of the most versatile (outside of perhaps the OCD), and seems to have the tube screamer tone nailed pretty well without nearly as much midrange honk. Heck, even the stock Boss version is not too bad. However, I will say the BD-2 becomes less natural the more gain you add. It's almost like a light-sounding distortion pedal at that point, which is cool in it's own right. Again, to each his own, and I do recommend at least test driving one if you can find a friend or neighbor or something with a version. Shut up and play. skipclone 1
there`s a really good discussion of this at gearslutz.com, I took a whole page of notes. I`m looking for a dist. myself at the moment but there`s a lot of OD stuff mentioned there to check out. Think the title is `distortion pedals that don`t suck` or something like that. Fumblyfingers
I want a ZenDrive really bad. I contacted him and he said let him know...I waited just a little too long and now he is not taking new orders until he catches up. I should try him again. A really good pedal. I really want a Keeley TS-808. I'm playing through a stock TS-9 from a borrowed Tele. I'm hoping the Keeley version of the TS-808 will have better low end response vs. the stock Ibanez (wishful thinking?). I haven't played through the Keeley BD-2, but I really didn't care for the stock Boss BD-2. Also, on the subject of boutique OD stompboxes, does anybody have experience with the Barber Tonepump EQ? mdrs
Since our last posts a month ago, I got a Hot Cake Bluesberry. It's good, but does color the tone a bit. It's better than stock OD pedals, but not quite up to the OCD, IMHO. I'm going to use it some more, and on some other amps, and will post more... Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. BillWelcome Home Studios
I'm not an expert on this subject by any means. I picked up a Reverend Drive Train which floats my boat, and I bought a British Tone Bone from one of our fellow forumites which I like. Those Radial pedals are well engineered and fairly popular. I'm curious about the analogman stuff, but have yet to hear it. Keeley always gets rave reviews. That's the impression I got from the first time I heard one as well. It's not a bad pedal. It's just not the cream of the crop or anywhere close. Shut up and play.
