Great!

nice, he has that keyboard very high...

It's because the Clavinet is placed over another keyboard, presumably a Rhodes.

Here's another, much more recent version, where he's playing at a more human height, on a Kurz PC88, and his playing is clearly displayed.

A large group with three keyboardists and two drummers! (Isn't one of them Terry Lyne Carrington?!)

Nice video! Although the DX7 horns leave a bit to be desired. :)

Finally uploaded, this video shows some good close-up shots of Stevie playing
. Also, the sound of that clav is so raw.

Fascinating. What is this? It sounds like an alternate take from the original session. Quite a different clav part. You notice Stevie's recurring falsetto scream? It's prerecorded.

Is the bass on the oringal recording synth bass?

Yes, and note the trumpet player's big vibrato! I don't remember that on the recording. I kind of like it, but it seems a little out of place... :)

Speaking of the bass, I think that -as it always happens- has a fundamental role in laying the groove of the song.

No, this was over a year later (1973) than the original Talking Book sessions and was part of a documentary showing how Stevie works in the studio.

And yes, that bass is done by a Moog.

Thanks for the info. BTW, I wonder if the trumpet player is the same as on the original. Sure is good.

Yep. Check it out:

Ah yes, linwood's secret stash. Thanks, I forgot about that. Reminds me of my

unanswered question: How the heck did Stevie do those slides? There's one

at 1:18, another at 2:15, and a big one at 3:30.

Here's what I wrote from the earlier topic:

"Still curious how he did those occational big slides. It's not portamento,

and the thing is in Eb, so I don't understand how he did it. A buddy of mine

suggested maybe he tuned the synth up or down a half step. What do you

think?"

I think the glide parameter which is portamento was tweaked on the Minimoog bass patch. Stevie manipulated it in how he played the notes. Easy to do with a monophonic sound.

Yep. Lotsa wheel action--both pitch and vibrato. And yeah the little grace note nuances and unexpected fill riffs. And what a sound! Sounds like minimoog--sawtooths on osc 1 and 2, both on 32', tuned zero-beat. Ironic that such a phat sound comes from tight unison.
