Good grief.

You know, when that fat SOB singer in the tights & stupid hat started hanging around Bucket Head when he was playing, Bucket Head walked off and acted like he had to adjust his amp.

MWAHAHahahahahahaha

if you closed your eyes can you really tell whos playing?

IMO no, shredders all sound the same not one stands out

nothing new, but thanks for the vid.

I get a little sick of the sweep tapping

I have heard some cool buckethead solos. I think alot of shredders do start to hit a wanker zone when they play fast but I am sure he is cleaning house with all that. Pls that is old.

I believe he is probably a badass beyond wanking.

I do believe in my heart playing fast licks isn't a problem but it is like skiiiing.. If you hit wanker posts on the way down you lose points--perhaps.. Kind of a little loosey goosey at that stage.

the guy has a cool way of doing some unconventional tones.

i dig Buckethead, he can groove quite nicely and his playing on Colonel Claypool's bucket of Bernie Brains is weirdly fitting.

he can shred yet he doesn't solely resort to that. i have heard some conventional stuff that shows he can feel and play soulfully.

+1 on the sweep & tap.

Impressive and I can't do it...but where's the soul?

Give me a Robin Trower or Billy Gibbons solo anyday.

He wears the mask so he can shop WalMart without being mobbed.

That's the rumor anyway.

Yeah, great chops no denying-I`ve been hearing about Buckethead for years, done some of his lessons in GP but that`s the first time I`ve actually heard him play. A little of this music goes a long way for me these days. A lot of these guys play like Corvettes, they can go really really fast-in one direction.

Same old surprises, brand new cliches-

To me just because you employ a certain technique in your playing, this isn't going to make or break you on a soul level. Playing soulfully is subjective anyways. There are some players out there everyone loves and goes nuts over how much emotion and feeling they have. But when I hear them I feel like I am listening to a 5 yr old with a broken hand. Am I wrong? No, cuz it is subjective.

My point is everyone likes different stuff. Personally I think alot of the wanking has been done better by guys from the 80's, so if someone is going to wank they should look at that first. Alot of wankers out now are just rehashing that stuff anyways.

Durock, i think there are some shredders that could touch you. There are ALOT of them. Keep in mind it is a broad term. NOt all of them abuse their chops. Listen to Brett Garsed sometime. He can play tasteful, but when he does shred every note counts. I heard some cool buckethead before. I love that whammy pedal! I hear they totally add noise and alter the tone alot when you have it in the chain tho.

I think 'stupid is as stupid does' on guitar. If you play something that is fast that fits and forwards the idea then you are a badass. If you play a fast lick that is a super fast mechanical pattern down the neck--will it fit? I dunno depends on teh music I guess.

I have heard 2 sides to Frank Gambale's playing. the crazy outside guy, and the brilliant musician guy. I love to listen to him shred cuz he is so far ahead of most guys technically and also in his ability to improv over complex changes. But some stuff I have heard by him make me want to jump off a building to end the madness. I mean someone could reduce him to just being some shredder but I garantee he can pretty much do whatever he wants. That is admirable. You gotta have guys like that to set the bar I think.

Not saying the skill isn't there, to me it sounds like buzzy fast

licks, sweeps that all sounds the same nothing musical about it at all.I've seen Buckethead pay homage to Jimi with MachineGun that was kind of cool no shredding at all.Not a buckethead hater at all just don't like the all the notes but no substance. If i listen to Rusty Cooley for more then three minutes i want to cut my wrist. Now Satch i love because he has alittle soul to his playing, cool licks, great tone, great touch. What i'm saying is just because i don't like it you still can...bye

I felt exactly the same way. When he hit the scene in the late 80s with his sweep picking, I bought one or two of his albums and they bored me to tears.

I have his sweep picking video on DVD. I bought it because the other guitar player in a band I was in years ago borrowed my VHS copy and never returned it. So, seeing it at G.C., I decided to buy it.

I work the sweeps quite a bit but it's a long term project.

Anyway... this DVD included a few bonus things. One of them was a fairly recent Gambale performance and it was really good. It looked like he grew up a lot musically.

I still don't know if I ever want to buy any of his CDs but I admire the fact that he's improved his musicianship over time and not spent the last 20 years just "sweeping" his way through life.

Or maybe grew down. I remember I bought a crazy live thing he did on Shrapnel in like 1988 and it was completely out of control my ear could make no rhyme or reason.

But I have heard some cool stuff by him. My buddy who is a sweet guitarist told me he saw clinic around here and it was emotionally moving to the point where people there had tears in thier eyes. But it wasn't even his clinic it was for the drummer.

I think he is one of the best shredders out there. I sweep too, I think it is a cool way to come into a lick. I mean arpeggio wise. As far as using sweeping to play 3 note per string scales I prefer to just pick and hammer pull off. I do practice that style though where every 3rd note is a downstroke. For no reason really cuz I never use that. But everything makes you better.

John Petrucci. The definitively "tasteful" shredder. Don't believe it? Take a listen to "Learning to Live" from Images and Words, then tell me he has no soul.

I'll take Petrucci over Bucket all day long.
