Griffinator
The mind of a guitar player? Funny, I wasn't aware guitar players had minds! (ducking and running) A bunch of loud, obnoxious music I USED to make with friends.
Big Red 67
It is all about sex and girls! LOL How long have you been playing? 26 years. What got you to start playing? Geddy Lee and Rush. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? Mom plays piano. Dad used to play guitar. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? I play both guitar and bass. Bass Geddy Lee. Guitar just cause I knew I could. How often do you play/practice a day? Depends. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? Both. I really like both for different reasons. I like seeing people digging the music live. I like experimenting too and that is easier to do at home. Are you part of a band? Yes, TooMuchFiction. www.toomuchfiction.com Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Not anymore. I get a focus that only happens when I play. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? Focus on the focus. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? A guy laughing with joy while I was playing. (yes I have heard the joke,... dude that wasn't joy. har har) What is the best experience youve ever had performing? Can't really say. I have loved allot of them. Megiliel
How long have you been playing? Just over 3 years. What got you to start playing? A Christmas present I didn't want at first. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? My grandfather plays guitar. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? I was forced to at first, but then my guitar kind of turned into my best friend. How often do you play/practice a day? It depends. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? Usually in front of my mirror... I like playing for others, though. Are you part of a band? Yes, sort of. It's very new. Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Oh, heck yes, but once I start playing all the fear just kind of splits. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? Prayer and thinking about songs I like. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? Well, playing in front of a bunch of preppy kids in my grade was a little trippy... What is the best experience youve ever had performing? Um, the above was the best and the worst, but I got to record a song once (some family members had the equipment) and that was awesome. Good luck on the college thingy. I'm going to be in college in two years. Is it scary? Seriously, though, this is a really cool post. And yeah, I also thought guitarists were mindless little carbon copies of Nigel Tufnel. In the order of your questions: Been playing almost 40 years. Musical household, the Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan. Mother plays piano, father was/is a violinist - not sure now. Eric Clapton - previous to that, I wanted to play drums. Initially 6 to 7 hours per day, not enough time on it now. Both - the rush of performing well is addictive. Yes, I front my band. Not anymore. They're in the past. People getting naked at the gigs, indecent proposals, promoters trying to spirit you away, without your band members, people hangin' in hours into a power failure at a gig..... Accolades from people who have truly made it in music, the local police departing from an outdoor gig after I introduced them as The Village People. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! How long have you been playing? [font:Arial Black] little over 30 years I think. What got you to start playing? [font:Arial Black] My friends had an old Silvertone at their house, I used to come over and sometimes I`d even let them play it too Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? [font:Arial Black] Yes, too many to list. I`m hoping do do one of my cousin`s jam tracks as a forum jam sometime, have to get his okay first. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? [font:Arial Black] I started on piano, still plink around on it but guitar was `the sound`, it expresses what I want to say. How often do you play/practice a day? [font:Arial Black] Varies, I can burn up 4-5 hours like nothing but I usually can`t spare it. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? [font:Arial Black] Both, if it`s improvisation I prefer a small crowd or just the band but I`ve done lots of live stuff in various arrangements. Nothing like the rush of playing in front of people. Are you part of a band? I recently had a parting of the ways with a band I performed with on special occasions, too many logistical difficulties and some personality issues. I want to focus on recording for now but I would get back out there if the right group came along. Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? [font:Arial Black] Not so much these days, I`d love to try a crowd of 5-10,000 and see how that goes. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? [font:Arial Black] Physical exercise, I have a good arsenal of relaxation techniques at this point. What is the strangest experience you’ve ever had performing? [font:Arial Black] One of the strangest was NOT performing, waiting at a debut gig for our bass player who never showed up, then finding out later he had been confronted by a fortune teller who told him that an evil spirit was following him and the guy freaked and locked himself in his house for three days. What is the best experience you’ve ever had performing? Too many but one was bringing down the house on the same stage where I had seen some of the very best string slingers perform. My first `real` gig was a regular at a club which was owned by a multimillionaire, on payday we`d be sitting at a table piled high with cash. That sure didn`t happen again. Again thank you, you're all my heroes for this. how long? 25 years i have always loved music and playing guitar seemed a cool way to make it as well. though nobody in my family plays an instrument i have always needed to do things with my hands and guitar was a natural thing. i don't practice every day but i am hardwired for guitar, if i am not playing it i am here on the forum or reading about guitars or surfing about guitars. i am mental in that way. i like playing in front of people and by myself, they are both different. it is great to make people happy (or angry) and being lost in the music when nobody else is around is a special feeling that cannot be explained with words. not only am i part of a band i am the best part! seriously we are writing original music and in the process (slow) of recording. i need to create and that is why i am in the band. i also need to release the extrovert that hides in my introverted self. guitar is my friend, weapon, pacifier and occasionally my enemy. sure i get nervous, and sometimes that turns into an exorcism of music from out of nowhere. i have no set way with dealing with jitters. i just do what i have to do. no strange happenings here. best experience...locking in with the guys and rockin. but this doesn't really tell you much about what a guitarplayer is. it is more than playing guitar. i am a dad, husband, sensitve and angry. i am still 16 in my mind and heart. i am a nice guy with a dark side that comes out my fingers. i am responsible and do what i have to yet guitar lets me do what i want to. i can see the beauty in the wood of each guitar. really all we are is a bunch of nerds who happen to love something that is percieved as cool. you really should read some threads on this forum and see what makes us tick. it would be far more informative. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will

What got you to start playing? -I smashed my French Horn. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? -My great great grandfather, once removed, played an ancient instrument, the one eyed trouser flute. He was renouned for his prowess. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? -Remember, I ALREADY TOLD YOU I SMASHED MY FRENCH HORN. How often do you play/practice a day? -I never practice, nor play. Seriously..... Are you part of a band? -Yea, a band of counterculture psychoterrorists, loosely refered to as "Forumites"....it's biblical (old testament). Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? -Only if they are naked.....and cute.....and interested. Then I get REALLY NERVOUS. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? -I refuse to play for jitters (it's my only prejudice). Zuben
1st - to Griff--- you have us confused with drummers Welcome Emmy. Guitar players, serous ones at least, fall into a larger group which includes all musicians. Each instrument has its own idiosyncrasies. You will here jokes about drummers, keyboard players, cello players... True musicians think differently than your normal population. They use different parts of their brains. With that said. How long have you been playing? Over 40 years What got you to start playing? My father was a concert pianist and my mother loved music. I started piano at 5 but after years of piano, I heard rock and roil and picked up the guitar. I think I was about 10. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? Only my father who passed away in the 1980's He was very gifted Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? I was drawn to the music first and then felt the guitar was the instrument I wanted to play. How often do you play/practice a day? I use to play hours. I spent a lot of those years playing in studios and touring with groups. Health reasons has me restricted but I probably play 3 hours a day just as therapy. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? Audience. The electricity a good crowd can generate can lift you past your own limitations. Inspiration! Are you part of a band? Semi Retired at the moment but still gig when I can Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Depends. Most of the time, no, it is more of a natural high but some gigs are special and you can't help but get butterflies. Almost everyone I know that this happens to will tell you it goes away after the 1st chords How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? Most of the time I am hanging out with others and don't think about it much. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? The funniest was were were playing a live promo on a Baltimore radio staion in 1970, the engineer flipped a wrong switch and the radio station had dead air for almost 20 minutes. We did get it on tape and it was replayed a day later. What is the best experience youve ever had performing? Kramer Ferrington III.
How long have you been playing? About 30 something odd years, but have taken sabbaticals on other instruments. What got you to start playing? My father bought a $10 guitar off the paper and gave up on it after a couple of hours, as most people. I was so freaked out that we'd just wasted $10 that I decided to take up the guitar so as not to waste money. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? My mother was a classical pianist. My father's pretty good at whistling. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? As above. How often do you play/practice a day? At least an hour a day, often more. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? In front of an audience. Are you part of a band? Yes. Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Yes, sometimes. It wears off. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? I used to drink, until one day I overdid and completely ruined a gig. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? Playing naked, while a chick dressed as a nun kept yelling incomprehensible abuse at me and trying to grab my privates. We were both very out of it at the time. What is the best experience you've ever had performing? Realizing, on our first headlining gig, that people had actually stood on the tables to get a better view. revolead
How long have you been playing? 5 years What got you to start playing? I love music. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? My father played violin, piano, and a little guitar (though not much more than a few chords); my older sister played French horn; my younger sister played the piano, and the clarinet; and my youngest sister plays the violin. I also played trumpet before moving over to guitar. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? It seemed cool and all the music I listened to had guitars in it, not trumpets. How often do you play/practice a day? 1-2 hours, maybe more depending on class schedules, work, etc. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? Private, but I played a solo at our college talent thingy when I was a frosh. The experience was interesting, and I liked the respect and honor I received, but truthfully, the performance was sort of lousy compared to what I pull in the bedroom/music studio. Are you part of a band? I was in high school, and we recently reunited. Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Sometimes. It depends on how well I know them and what they expect of me. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? Suck it up and start playing. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? With that performance frosh year (which was on a Wednesday), it was strange being the only person who played guitar. Everyone else just sang. However, the cool thing was everyone remembered me. I saw some kid at a bus stop out partying the following Friday night, and he said, Hey, youre that kid who played that guitar. That was awesome. I had an instant but brief following. What is the best experience youve ever had performing? I teacher-assisted a beginners class when I was a senior in high school. I never thought I was a great player or anything, but it was fun and definitely helped the teacher a lot. He was forever grateful, since showing 30 kids how to play was next to impossible. They all looked up to me whenever I played, and it was nice to have the honor and respect brought not from the instrument, but all the hard work I put into practicing and playing. Shut up and play. emmy
I'm a junior in college, I like long walks on the beach and candle lit dinners...no seriously now it's a college paper. I am going to the University of North Texas and I am a Communication Design major, which is a fancy ass way of saying I like to paint pretty pictures in Photoshop. The paper is for an upper level Advertising class, which happens to be my minor. I think its an exercise in group surveying to find out how much you can learn from others through a series of simple questions and interviews. For this particular paper Ive spent the last few days at my local Guitar Center talking to the guys that work there and getting a feel for things. Im afraid theyre going to start thinking Im crazy and kick me out any day now for loitering. And I would like to thank all of you again for helping me out here, you're life savers. skipclone 1
I have an idea, don`t know if it`s helpful but I have a light work day today-here`s one or two questions that you didn`t ask but which may be of help: Would I play music I didn`t like for money? too late, already have, more than once. Is music my only pursuit? no, my other main thing is martial arts but I also like travel, Japanese sake, beer and...uh, it gets fuzzy after beer. Do I prefer working alone or in collaborations? for songwriting/composing I`m not big on collaborations normally but I do like learning from others. In a band of course there`s not a lot of options, I do try to be a team player but inevitably some frictions will arise. In my opinion is it better to be in a band with friends or strangers? good question. I don`t like sacrificing friendships due to band politics and if someone is a great player and not a total jerk, I don`t mind keeping it on a business level. Time is a limited resource after all. GuitarPlayerFL
How long have you been playing? 32 years. What got you to start playing? Watching Johnny Winter on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (TV show) got me interested in guitar. Ritchie Blackmore's playing on Deep Purple's Machine Head album made me start taking guitar lessons. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? Nobody in my family played anything. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? See above. How often do you play/practice a day? When I was starting, 3 hours a day. Now, a few times a week...having a real job sucks. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? In the 80s, I played 6 days a week in clubs. Now, in private. Playing in front of people is always better. Are you part of a band? Not now....musicians are too flakey to deal with! Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Never. After my first time playing out, I found that 99% of the audience can't hear mistakes you make unless you play the same clam over and over. If the audience had any taste, they'd be listening to Bach at the Symphony. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? If I had jitters, I'd drink a couple of brews before the gig. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? On a small stage, I was standing next to the power amps and fell on them while doing my Angus Young imitation...that really hurt! What is the best experience youve ever had performing? Playing for about a zillion people at a pregame (Florida/Georgia college football) show the night before and playing Eric Johnson's Soulful Terrain and having everybody looking. Eric Iverson
How long playing? 38 years, give or take. What got me start playing? I thought it would help get some girls. Does anybody else play in my family? My dad was a great music lover and instrument collector - I think he had at least one of every instrument known to Western man, and a couple dozen violins, violas and cellos. And my sister is a fine flutist. Reason for playing guitar? Well, I was already a trumpet player, but I liked rock music, and girls. How often do I play/practice? I play just about every day. Practice in a disciplined sense? Not nearly often enough, but I DO make sure I know the tunes to be played on stage! Am I part of a band? I'm part of 2 or 3 bands, but we don't play often enough in public for there to be scheduling conflicts. I hope to change that. Do I get nervous? Not particularly, if I know the material and/or have the sheet music in front of me. Strangest experience? I guess I lead a sheltered life. Not too much mondo bizarro. Best experience? I've had a lot of good experiences - it's hard to pick any one in particular. Emmy, I would love to read your paper once it's done - to see how you make sense out of all these widely varied stories! At least you've come to see, I hope, that guitarists in general are nice enough people - we're just obsessed with our instrument, but there ain't no malice there. (Those of you who DO play guitar out of malice, please feel free to disagree. Please don't feel free to do anything malicious to ME!) Come to think of it, "Malice Aforethought" might be a good name for a punk band! All the best Eric
A String
For me, playing music is an outlet. There was always this music, trapped inside of me. I was always tapping beats on things as a kid. When I found the guitar, it allowed me to let that music come out. How long have you been playing? Just over 24 years now. What got you to start playing? My Dad played guitar. I took an interest right away. Does anyone else in your family play an instrument? If so who and what do they play? See the above answer. Is there a reason you chose to learn how to play the guitar? Again, growing up, listening to my Father play, drew me right into it. How often do you play/practice a day? Not as much as I'd like to, I used to play eight hours a day. Now, I usually get in about one hour a day. Do you play in front of an audience or in private? Which do you prefer? Now I play in private. I used to play for audiences. I really miss it. Are you part of a band? I was in a proffessional road band for seven years and several smaller bands before and since then. Currently, I mainly do studio work. Do you get nervous before you play in front of people or if people listen to you play? Used to. After so many years, it just feels like second nature now. How do you deal with any jitters you might get before performing? When I used to suffer from stage fright, there was one thing that worked like a charm, practice. The better you know the piece, the less worried you are about mistakes and the less nervous you are about going on stage. What is the strangest experience youve ever had performing? Wow...we had a dog get on stage with us once. He wandered into the club and came right up on stage and laid on my feet. Of course there is the woman, jumping on stage and flashing her boobs... What is the best experience youve ever had performing? The arena gigs were the best.
