The little lead riff from the Beatles "Good Morning". Short, sweet, to the rockin' point.

I hate Smoke on the Water.... what a dirge. Give me Sweet Child in Time, Fireball, or Burn.

Mississippi Queen is a classic, no doubt.

But there are just so many...

Many to choose from, but how about:

Warren DeMartini's "Shame, Shame, Shame"(even better than "Lay It Down" IMHO)

EVH's "Aint Talkin 'Bout Love" never gets old.

"No More Mr Nice Guy" Michael Bruce(maybe Glen Buxton) from 'Billion Dollar Babies' A. Cooper

Judas Priest's "Bloodstone" off 'Screaming For Vengeance'-the opening riff to this is one of my all time favorite guitar moments!

Def Leppard's "High And Dry(Saturday Night)" from said album is great.

Cool topic, Editor Boy, like Tony Iommi and James Hetfield and many others know,The Riff is King!

Thanks tons for all the fabulous suggestions. I'm starting to compile the list, and there ARE some surprises. It's not entirely a list of the "obvious classics," and I thank everyone for making THAT possible by bringing in so many diverse artists.

Keep 'em comin'!

Cheers,

Mike

Great idea for an article.

The first guitar part that I heard and actually stuck in my that wasn't a guitar solo (I guess thats my definition of a riff) was "Day Tripper". I remember a couple months after taking up guitar finding out my cousin could play that riff, I was hooked on riffs from then on.

The riff that made me want to play guitar in the first place (before I knew what a riff was), was Elton Johns "Love Lies Bleeding".

Soon after that I discovered the band Riff City (known to civilians as Led Zeppilin). It would be hard to not have a dozen Zep riffs in a "best of" list but I guess you have to give other bands a chance.

It would be cool to have a sub-article with lots of famous guitarists giving their definition of a riff and what their favorites are as well. What do Clapton, Beck, and Page list as their top ten riffs? Is Chuck Berry's "Johnny B Goode" a riff? Whats the difference between a riff and a simple lick, interview the usual suspects to see what their definition is.

1. I Want To Take You Higher by Sly & the Family Stone

2. Search & Destroy by The Stooges

3. Feel Good Hit of the Summer by QOTSA

4. Bring It On Home by Led Zeppelin

5. Breed by Nirvana

6. Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes

7. Kick Out the Jams by MC5

8. It's A Long Way To the Top by AC/DC

9. Sad But True by Metallica

10. Super Stupid by Funkadelic. I'd like to know how many royalties Tom Morello owes on this riff. And to think Eddie Hazel always falls into the "unsung" category.
