3M sticky tape removal.

I am trying to remove a Roland GK-2 midi pickup from a guitar I have. It's mounted with that super permanent 3M tape (the thin foam strip with the green plaid). It's stuck pretty good and I don't want to mar the finish.

Any ideas?

Wow, that's going to be tough. You're talking a bond at pratically the molecular level.

How thick is the strip? That is, can you get UNDER the pickup? I'm thinking surgical removal, but leaving the "strip" intact.

At that point, the degreasers or "Goo Gone" may remove the adhesive residue without (hopefully) ruining the finish.

Alternatively (and I know some will disagree) but if you apply heat to the pickup, the glue my become tacky enough to remove it. I would suggest an iron for this.

Before and after pics would be nice to see if you have the time to post them! GOOD LUCK :)

A music store I worked at used AquaVelva aftershave to get goo from stickers and such off used guitars. it worked great and didn't mar finishes. Give it a whack.

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

The citrus cleaners shouldn't be harsh on guitar finishes.. They're used quite a bit in wood cleaners and have no alcohol in them. Which is why I suggest you stay away from Aqua Velva, which I gather has a good deal of alcohol in it. Keep alcohol where it belongs, in your beer. ;)
