OT: Saw RANCID sat night at BBKings in NYC.

My wife is a big Rancid fan so I took her to the Saturday night show at BB Kings in Times Square. What a great show they put on! They have some great fans that know all their stuff. Punk rock in the style of the Ramones and Clash.

Althouh we stayed away from the pit... lots of guys (and some girls) with Mohawks slam dancing and crowd surfing, we still had a good time.

Lars played an SG through a JCM800 Marshall half stack and had a great overdriven (and some gain) sound. He only changed guitars when he broke a string! Tim Armstrong played a hollow body electric and a double cutaway LP or maybe PRS(?) through a half stack as well (maybe H&K?) and had a slightly less distored sound. These two guys compliment each other really well in terms of playing style, both rythm and lead as well as singing.

The band even took it down a bit for a few songs played on acoustics. The drummer even played guitar for those songs too!

First time in BB Kings... Nice place to see a show. Not very big at all, long bar in the back and easy to get too (W 42 between 7 and 8th aves). I think Peter Frampton, Robin Trower and Sonny Landreth will be playing there in Sep.

Old school Punk at it's best. These guys have been around a long time. To me, they are to punk what Aerosmith and the Stones are to main stream rock...survivors that know how to keep writing good songs.

Your post makes me want to go see them again. It's been a while.

Thanks for sharing. :thu:

Somehow, the combination of Rancid and BB King (yes, I know it's a place, not the man himself). conjures up a mental picture of BB up there sitting on a chair in his spangled tuxedo jacket with Lucille on his lap, looking a bit aghast while a band of wild-eyed punkers with torn clothes and mohawks contort, spasm, and leap like jumping jacks off of, and back onto the stage all around him.

I don't know whether to be amused or offended. But, I suppose BB himself is laughing all the way to the bank...

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

Wow... I have to agree with all the (positive)comments above on Rancid. I'll share them with my wife. She loves raw rock music with an edge and although she is not a musician, she can definitely appreciate a well written song with a decent melody along with all that distortion!

It is a funny thought... mixing the punk rock of Rancid with the images of BB King! I imagine the club is a business like any other and needs to book bands that draw. Rancid played 4 sold-out shows there last week (Thurs thru Sunday). The great part about the club is that its not too big at all and you feel close to the band from any spot... even back at the bar.

if this was the 25th show, i was there. one of the best nights of my life. the pit was amazing. the people who went where all very cool, no jerks in the crowd. when rancid covered big city and soun system by operation ivy, i nearly cried, as to the fact operation ivy is my favorite band ever, and tim and matt are ex members of operation ivy. one of the best shows ive been to.
