Best advice I can give you is to go to a musical instrument store (like Guitar Center -- shudder) and try out their amps with your guitar.

The sound you want and will like is very subjective. We could give you all sorts of suggestions but ultimately it comes down to what you like. And we can't know what that is.

We can give recommendations on power requirements, number and/or size of drivers (if it's a combo or speaker cab), and even whether you might like tube or SS amps (an ES-335 probably will sound better with a tube amp).

If you have less broad questions, we'll try to help you out. But there are lots of amps that will sound good with an ES-335.

I like the sound of mine with a Peavey Classic 50 (4x10), a Hughes & Kettner Triamp Mk III and 4x12 cabs, a Marshall JCM800 2203 with a Marshall 4x12 full stack (1960 A & B cabs), or my Fender Blues Junior, or my Epiphone Valve Junior. And the list goes on.

I won't recommend an amp for the 335, except high gain amps DON'T work all that well with them, mostly because of the feedback- my 335 sounds good with just about any amp I've tried it with.

If you want to sound like Larry Carlton in the late 70s you need to get a Fender Princeton.

I agree with the comment that ES335s don't typically sound too great with a high gain amp. Pretty much any Fender amp will work well with it. My favorite would probably be a Deluxe Reverb. If you want to spend a little less money a Peavey Classic 30 would also be a good choice.

I used to use an ES-350(rewired like a 335) with my Mark III Boogie, and it was sweet. Now, full-on hollowbodies howled like a scalded dog with my Boogie, but that centerblock on those guitars was put there to control feedback, and it worked great for me. When kicked in the lead channel, the tone had this lovely dry CRACK! to it on the bridge pickup. If I hit some notes, the air would rush out of the F holes, and for some reason that was seriously cool to me.

I miss that guitar, among others...

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

I'm with you there, Picker. Nothing quite like the breeze whipping out of the f holes on your ES while running a Mesa boogie, or Marshall, or Fender for that matter. It would literally blow the hair on your forearm!!

Thanks for the input! We tried several 335's through a Fender twin reissue at a GC today and that combination sounded quite good. We're going to test a Mesa Heartbreaker next week and do some more shopping. The amp selecton at the GC was fairly limited today... Thanks again for the input!

Before I forget, Welcome to the Forum!

The Twin Reverb reissue is a great amp. But, beware, IT IS VERY LOUD! And, for many applications, it won't sound right until it is VERY LOUD!! This might be bad, if you want to play it in your basement (i.e. you'll go deaf FAST). But, if you want a quality tube amp, with plenty of clean headroom, it's a great one.

Which GC in PA are you shopping at?

My son and I visited the Syracuse NY GC to try the 335's. But, we routinely visit a variety of music stores in PA, NY, DE and NJ and we both have a wide range of musical interests. We wanted to to test a Fender Deluxe with the 335 but it wasn't available there at the time. We will try some other stores. Thanks for the welcome!

Well, In my opinion, the best music store in our area is the GC in Cherry Hill. If you go there, ask for Eliot, and tell him I sent you. He'll take care of you. And, he knows what amps sound best for a 335.

Well, I have made great experiences with my Gibson GA-30. They're getting a bit rare if you want a used one, but they're said to appreciate in value very soon. Should be a great match with an ES-355 too, especially for clean blues tones.

I've only had my 335 for a few months but, for whatever its worth, I think it sounds awesome through my fender blues junior. It definitely does that BB king thing in the bridge position and you get a nice warm crunchy tone in the neck. The blues junior in general is a great bargin for the price.

Hey Jason, is that the 335 reissue? I played one like that in G.C. a few months back and it was awesome.

Nope, its just ES-335 custom with the satin finish. I'm sure the reissues are nicer but I'm just a hobbyist and could justify the $$$. Actually, there's probably no reasonable "justification" for the $1800 I dropped on this one but I had a mean case of GAS that day.

Thanks for the welcome. This forum is great. The interesting discussion to juvenille argument ratio seems to be unusually high for an internet chat forum :)

Yes, I saw Cream at the garden and it was awesome. My wife and I are both a bit too young (30 and 28) to have seen them live the first time around so it was a dream come true for both of us (albeit one of the most expensive weekends of my life).
