I picked Layla, mostly cause its the song I am most familiar with. Some of the songs on that list I have never heard even though they are from my era. By the way, this is a good idea Zan, getting deep into a song. I'm sure it will be enlightning.

I've been doing this for years. It was part of training from a studio class I took with Marty Feldman (the sound engineer, not the google-eyed actor. ;) ) at Columbia College. (In Marty's Paragon Studios, actually.)

I voted for Joe Walsh. I love the song. Love Joe's tones. Love his less than pure-singing voice.

I love the original version of Layla, but talk about the tones? They're grating if you ask me. That song needed a new version years before Clapton ruined it by doing the unplugged arrangement. Took a heart-wrenching lyric with music to match and turned it into a  sleep aid.

Layla is one of the great songs I'd rather not analyze for tones.

I neither know any of the others, nor do I have them on any recordings.

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

Layla

....The late (I believe) Jim Gordon wrote the piano solo at the end of that song... He also played drums for Derrick and the Dominos. Arthur Feidler from the Boston Pops claimed that piano solo to be one of the most moving modern passages he had ever heard...

I'm blown out by the number of you either saying or implying that you've never heard Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty!

It's a fantastic song, that sax just spins me out every time and the recording is fantastic. Ohm and the guitar solo at the end is a total cosmic freak out.

Good call, I doubt it'll win but what a cool song!

Layla.......auughh anything but layla. :bor: Guess it one of those songs, at least for me, that I have heard way to much on the radio, thank god for XM. ;)

What can this strange device be?

When I touch it, it gives forth a sound

It's got wires that vibrate, and give music

What can this thing be that I found?

Anyone who was awake during at least part of the 20th century knows Baker Street. Smooth song.

I get the feeling you just don't know that THAT song with the sax is called "Baker Street". :)

It's been a staple on various radio formats since it came out in 1978 or whenever it was.

I'm pretty sure you know it, you just don't recognize the name. It's gotten a LOT of air time since it came out in the late '70s (Gerry Rafferty Station to Station album). The Foo Fighters did a cover of it a while back that just (IMHO) didn't make it. It was a song about busking at one of the stations on the London Underground..
