So they operated again? I popped my thumb wrestling with my son (at 48 I'm getting too old for this nonsense). It just took a tiny chip out of the bone and probably stretched the tendon. I wore a removable brace for a couple of weeks and was going nuts. I can't image what casts feel like. Sas - sorry to hear about your wife. My mother-in-law is going through that. It made me piss blood, too.....not fun. I'll tell you...if there was any way that I could have traded places with my wife...(and put my monster-in-law in her place)....I would have. LPCustom Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Thanks MDRS and Sas. Yeah, I had an accident on my Fatboy (Harley) on 3 July. A woman in an SUV pulled out in front of me. About 75 feet in front of me. I was going about 45 MPH. I laid the bike down and it hit the SUV first. But I bounced off of the side pretty hard (hard enough to crack my helmet) and landed in the grass on the side of the road. I had a concussion, too. I was kind of loopy for a day or so. Needless to say, my 4th of July sucked. I've got an upper arm (humerous) cast that goes from my left shoulder to my left wrist. The cast on my hand is for the two middle fingers on my left hand and is bonded to the arm cast. I had some surgery done to repair the synovial sheaths on the middle and ring fingers and to remove some internal scarring. Apparently, my fingers got lacerated internally back in January when I broke those fingers (first phalange) and developed some scar tissue and adhesions when the splints were removed too soon (or something like that). Supposedly everything will be fine this time. After the cast comes off I still have to wear splints on those two fingers for another two months. I'm wearing a "walking" cast on my left leg, now. That sure beats the 'toes to upper thigh' high cast that I had initially. I broke the left tibia and the fibula about two inches below the knee. Simple fractures. Apparently that was from hitting the back bumper of the SUV. I had a hell of a bruise from that (it was _black_) and it hurt like the devil. The upper arm cast also had a support/stabilizer strut that fit to my hip on the that side, too. At least they removed that part and it's just in a sling, now. The doctor was concerned I might have broken a couple of the wrist bones, too, because I reported an "ache" in my wrist after a couple of days. X-rays are "inconclusive" about that. But it did show a probable compression fracture of the ulna at the "articular capsule" (whatever that is). I've been having some pain in my left hip since the accident, but the the orthopaedist said the bone scan showed that it was probably caused by my arthritis. All the bruising on my face is mostly gone, now (I looked like I got hit by a truck for while -- come to think of it I DID get hit by a truck... ). My cracked ribs have pretty much healed (breathing doesn't hurt, now). The only internal injury other than the cracked ribs was a bruised kidney. I was passing a bit of blood for a while. I went to the nephrologist last week and he said it appears to be healing well. I feel _much_ better now. I only have to deal with the unscratchable itches every now and then (those drive me absolutely bonkers). I went on short term disability (30 days) at first. And I took two weeks vacation time after that. I went back to work on Monday after being out six weeks. I got a check from the woman's insurance company today to pay for my bike (her culpability is not in dispute). It's about $2700 short of being able to buy another new one ($16250). But I'm not going to buy another bike. I put the money in my son's college fund. After having a couple of friends die or get severely injured riding street bikes, I count myself very lucky to be alive and still having all my parts. It could have been _much_ worse. I think getting off and behind the bike probably helped a lot. The bike hit the SUV first and pushed it about 10 feet. It also spun it around some so I just hit it a glancing blow rather than straight on. I think if I'd hit it straight on, I'd be dead. My wife has made it clear that she's gone if I buy another bike. I don't think I'm that dumb, although some may argue that. Born on the Bayou
FormerOceanwaySlave Posted August 23, 2006 Posted August 23, 2006 Dear LPCustom, You have my profound sympathies regarding your injuries. Suffice it to say have some small knowledge of such things. I applaud you on your decision to stop riding; the problem is, alas, not how good a rider you are, but rather, how terribly vulnerable you are when you share the road with others. The human body is quite resilient but that doesn't mean that we need to continually test it. Good luck, Alan Tomlinson

S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq. Posted August 23, 2006 Author Posted August 23, 2006 Well, LP...I'm just glad it wasn't worse. That's exactly why I don't like riding on the street. You cannot predict what's around the next corner, what's on the pavement, when a dog or deer or horse is going to dart out in front of you, when some moron is going to back out of a driveway in front of you....and if you take on ANYTHING with a motorcycle you automatically lose. Put me on Road Atlanta or VIR or Roebling Road or whatever racetrack at 175 mph and I'm perfectly happy....put me in traffic at 45 mph and I'm scared shitless. The high-speed getoff isn't what breaks stuff...it's hitting other big, hard things...at least on the race track everybody is going the same way and everyone is qualified to be out there. Anyway..offer's still open....if I can help. "And so I definitely, when I have a daughter, I have a lot of good advice for her." ~Paris Hilton BWAAAHAAAHAAHAAA!!!
