fantasticsound Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 Thanks, guys! It wasn't intended to be a challenge to find me. I put a , didn't I? The funny thing is everyone else with a beard save Tevye, had no beard when we began. Several of them are starting to come into their own. Not bad for a month of growing. Mine's 6 - 8 months old if IIRC. It's going to be a blast! After some tough, 1-week to go rehearsals, yesterday's went very well! I'm psyched! Leaving for the theater now! Thanks, again! fantasticsound Posted August 18, 2006 Author Posted August 18, 2006 Thanks guys and girls! The show was fantastic! I was kinda worried we'd have a typical, Thursday night crowd for Nashville. Otherwise, near empty. (You can hear the crickets, can't you? ) But the house was almost filled. Of course, most of the people coming to see me in the show are friends from Lilly's school, so they wouldn't be at a 2 1/2 hour performance on a school night. I'll see them Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Even the choreographer and musical director were pleasantly surprised at the personality shift onstage. Everyone spoke and sang to the rafters! Lee, where did you find that hebrew passage? (And how can I find the translation? I can speak and chant in Hebrew, but I'm not at all fluent. Working to change that now.) Warthog, actually, I brought Lilly's First Act, child's acoustic (Whose playability is amazing for a $25 - $35 toy!) to rehearsal one night and the musical director produced the guitar score! We toyed with the idea of having me play, either onstage or off, but between singing, dancing, dressing, and perhaps most of all, babysitting our old man playing my father, the rabbi, it just wasn't going to work. I even brought my banjolin to see if someone could use it for the tavern scene when the Russians interupt our merryment with their own dance. It sounded great, but I'm onstage and supposed to be upset (along with the other jews) at the interuption. It required a complete break in character but would've been fun to play, though! caprae Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Fiddler on the Roof was the first play that our high school put on that I recall seeing. The main character was played by a new guy who lived up the road from me. Big, a little overweight and a beautiful voice. I fell in love with plays right then and there. They even had the guys doing that squat and jump up dancing. I'm sorry I can't see it. Break a glass for me. Raise your children and spoil your grandchildren. fantasticsound Posted August 21, 2006 Author Posted August 21, 2006 Thanks again, guys! On Friday afternoon we received an email message. Our producer, who intended to have a day off on Friday was called in. At first, she couldn't get through to the switchboard because of the call traffic of people asking, "Can we buy tickets at the door?" She had to go to work to print more tickets! We arrived Saturday afternoon to find that Thursday's audience had gone home and told lots of people how good it was! We not only sold out the seating, it was SRO and people still bought tickets for the 2 1/2 hour performance! Yeah, ba-by! We were singing to the rafters to fill that room sans body mics. (Only the "rabbi" and "Golde", who was suffering from a sore throat had lav's.) It was wonderful. On Sunday, for the matinee, we half expected a smaller audience. There were few pre-sales. Instead, the crowd was bigger than Saturday night! The choreographer was already our "mistress of ceremonies", reminding people to not take pictures, etc. On Sunday afternoon she stepped out front of the curtain and declared, "I'm Kate _______ and I'll be your choreographer this afternoon. She then explained we'd be in the house for a scene and would require clear aisles, just to make sure we could reach our marks. The bad news was one major character had difficulty with lines in several, key scenes. The good news is we covered very well without missing any important sequences. I doubt any of the audience knew there were glitches at all! I can't tell you how enjoyable the past 6 weeks have been. If you have even an inkling you'd like to act I urge you to find a community theater company, if not a professional theater, and stretch... It was 18 years since I graced a theater stage and it was more wonderful than before! It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd

NMcGuitar Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Hey, Neil, congrats!!! Sorry I didn't see this thread when it first went up, I would have wished you luck (in several different ways - I'm so tired of "break a leg" that I've got my own little rituals). Instead, let me just say how psyched I am that it went so well! Sounds like the theatre bug is biting you - before you know it, you'll end up like me! Tedster Posted August 22, 2006 Posted August 22, 2006 Hey, I can figure out that Hebrew passage. It says... "If I were a rich man Biddy biddy biddy biddy biddy biddy biddy bum..." "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
fantasticsound Posted August 22, 2006 Author Posted August 22, 2006 Everything in Hebrew looks like "If I were a rich man.." to you, Ted! Thanks again, guys! Yesterday they talked about the play at Lilly's school assembly and asked the kids who was in the play connected with Akiva. I was there and they asked me to do a bit, but I had no clue what to do solo. A minute in the car and I had an idea. So this morning the last minute of assembly began with me asking, "Rabbi.. may I ask you a question??" to which Lilly responded (in mock importance and wisdom) "Yes, my son!" "Is there a proper blessing for the tsar??" "Yes, of course there is. (sung) May god bless and keep the tsaaaaaarrr... far away from us!" This was followed by my singing the last half of To Life! I was more nervous performing for 90 kids than 3 full performances to a packed theater! What the heck did I do, not even auditioning for shows the past 18 years?? It's easiest to find me on Facebook. I was asked by the producer (who works for the JCC) to be on "the committee" for the next production. The Sunday of labor day weekend she's holding an informal, champagne breakfast for several of the principle movers & shakers in the group. They've used the same director and choreographer for the past few shows and they're wonderful to work with, so they are included in deciding the next show. Apparently I made a favorable impression on several people in this group because they want me to be in on it. This is all very new to me. People are treating me like an adult and it's rather disconcerting almost as much as it is flattering. A-string and anyone else interested. This was the translation I managed to get from an online translator: "Neal, every the best in the yours acts a career, GOD congratulate your efforts and what that wonderful and interesting thing to be to do. I wish my ability to be there to watch and applauds, all the best to you, your family must be very proud as we on the forum." Lee's an English-as-a-Second-Langauge candidate, by the looks of it.
