Pappy P Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 What do you remember about the day that Elvis Died? I remember my best friends mom cried, and I so wanted to console her. This was way before anyone had known what milf was. www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click

fantasticsound Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I was in sleepover summer camp so it was a non-event. I'm not sure I knew he died until long after returning home. By then most of the interest had already died down. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
Guitar Geezer Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Funny thing, I don't really remember Elvis's passing (August 1977, probably moving into first house with late ex-wife ) But I do remember John Lennon's vividly. Lynn G

A String Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 It didn't effect me at all. I really don't recall it being mentioned by anyone when it happened. John Lennon however, I recall quite well. Hit me like a brick. Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music
Shoes Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I was sitting in the 76 Chrysler Cordoba (with Rich Corinthian Leather seats!) waiting for mom to drive me into town. Turned on the radio and almost as quickly as sound came out of the speakers the radio anouncer uttered those imortal words "Elvis has left the building... for good". Lennon: At school Zappa: Home with the flu Kennedy: In my crib taking a nap. Bush: Hopefully while I'm typing this reply! I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.
caprae Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I was in Memphis (NAS Millington) at the time. I couldn't understand what all the hoopla was about. I new of Elvis, had one of his older records, saw a couple of movies, but hey, people die all of the time. So basically what I remember was the education of seeing all these people acting really bizarre over someone's death. Raise your children and spoil your grandchildren. Spoil your children and raise your grandchildren.

To me that is crass, and WAY out of line, and in extremely poor taste. Since I'm not Canadian, it would be extremely presumtuous also. I do not find it cute or funny in the least. I normally would not say anything at all because I have made a promise to myself that I would not engage in any more of the vapid religous and political discussions (fights) that occur on this forum, but to openly wish that our president would die is just simply going too far. I consider you to be one of the good guys on this forum, and to tell you the truth, I find this comment very surprising and disappointing coming from you. I'm assuming this was meant as tongue-in-cheek and was simply poor judgement or not well thought out. I will not hold it against you and will not mention it again after this. Once this reply is typed and sent, consider it forgotten on my part. I just wanted to let you know that President Bush does have some supporters in the U.S. and we do not wish him dead. ~Sas "And so I definitely, when I have a daughter, I have a lot of good advice for her." ~Paris Hilton BWAAAHAAAHAAHAAA!!!
S. Yeti Bigfoot, Esq. Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 When JFK died I was in the dentist's chair. I was 10 years old. I was convinced for several weeks that the Russians were going to attack us at any time. When Elvis died I was at work. I was saddened, but I'm not sure I was really surprised. When John Lennon died, I was on I-10 driving from Tallahassee, Fl to Mobile Alabama and was just passing the Milton, Fl exit. This one shocked me to the core. Hound Dog Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Our family came home, turned on the TV and there was the news. I looked at my mom and I can't describe the look of shock on her face. It deeply affected her, as if it were a family member. Yum, Yum! Eat em up!

Tedster Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 I remember it, because I happened to be in Memphis that day. Me and a college bud were driving back from California to Michigan. We took the southern route, visited friends in New Mexico and Texas...then headed up through Arkansas. Drove through Memphis, and we were making Elvis jokes, y'know, talking like Elvis and all. Got into Michigan that night...turned on the TV and heard that he'd died. Too weird. Three years later I was living in Marine City Michigan, working at a little country radio station. Got home from work, and late that night the phone rang. It was a high school chum, saying he'd heard that one of the Beatles was shot. He didn't know which one...he'd only heard the news in passing. And it was like "Which Beatle? Shot? Does that mean shot and killed, or just shot and flesh-wounded? How?" We were really broke, I don't think we had a TV or anything. I thought he was joking or pulling my leg. Of course...in the morning... I read the news today, oh boy... "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
picker Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 For Kennedy, I was on Guam with my family. I got up one Saturday morning and went in to watch the cartoons. The one TV channel we had on the island was playing dirge music and had some stationary slide or backdrop on the camera. We had no idea what was going on till someone who knew my dad called up and said "Did you know your President was dead?" It was weird, but I was in the fourth grade, so what did I know from anything? I was in Las Vegas when I heard about Elvis. I had been looking for a job and was walking home. I saw it on some flashing lighted billboard on the strip. I was suprised, but not particular upset about it. For Lennon, my ship was either on the way back from or just back from a Navy WestPac cruise, and I heard about it on the hanger deck. When I heard it, I felt like someone had stolen my childhood. Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

But louder.: Bush: Hopefully while I'm typing this reply! Always speak your mind! It may offend some and please others, but if you don't speak YOUR mind you may end up speaking someone elses. Peace! This is NOT a political forum. There is NO PLACE in here for anyone to wish the President of the United States would die....speaking their mind OR speaking someone else's. (My problem is NOT with Guitars are Like Shoes at this point...we were PAST that until someone decided to ressurect it) This is a guitar forum. If there were shorter words I could use to explain that, I would. Some people would not understand it no matter how few syllable were used in the explanation, I guess. Politics and religion are very sensitive subjects. When comments such as that are made, it does, in fact, offend people. Is that really appropriate for a guitar forum? Do you think it's appropriate to make comments and start discussions that are not related to guitars or music in any way, but are designed only to polarize and alienate people? I personally do not care one whit what your political or religious views are. I don't want to hear it. I come here to discuss guitars, not politics or religion. "Speaking your mind" is NOT always appropriate, nor even allowed. Whether you realize it or not, "free speech" does not apply in this forum. There are rules by which we are to conduct ourselves and there are topics which are not allowed. I suggest that if "speaking your mind" is that important to you and you want to be in a forum where everyone has the same political and religious views and you can just bash whomever you want, then maybe you need to leave this forum and go to a political forum. Look at it like this. You are a guest in this forum. If you are a guest in someone else's house, then there are certain things that you would not say in that person's house. You have to respect their wishes and their house rules. If you come to my house and say something like that, you would likely find yourself in a heap in the front yard before you realized what happened to you. Free speech has it's limits. Your rights end where mine start. "And so I definitely, when I have a daughter, I have a lot of good advice for her." ~Paris Hilton BWAAAHAAAHAAHAAA!!!
