AeroG33k Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I think it's perfectly acceptable to have a cultural definition and a separate scientific definition. Scientifically, it should not be called a planet, unless all other KBO's get that status too...which would make every kid in school hate scientists for having to learn MANY more planets. Science should be bound by clear, logical definitions, not by customs. I'm sure that pluto will always have a special mention in textbooks, based on culture and its history. -Andy "I know we all can't stay here forever so I want to write my words on the face of today...and they'll paint it" -Shannon Hoon (Blind Melon)

Eric Iverson Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 So astronomical bodies don't conveniently fit into convenient categories anymore? How inconvenient! But welcome to the real universe! At any rate, a planet by any other name would smell as sweet!

fantasticsound Posted August 24, 2006 Posted August 24, 2006 I've been mulling this over all day. Not that it makes a big difference in my life or anything, but I'm flabbergasted that a descriptive word such as, "planet," can go thousands of years without a scientific definition. That's just amazing. And weird. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd

That's just amazing. And weird. I agree. I suppose the "planet" label was added, long before they really had a grasp on what was out there. Hey! fantasticsound Posted August 25, 2006 Posted August 25, 2006 We were wondering that, too, yesterday. What happens to millions of people using astrology if their "planet" no longer is one? It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
Kramer Ferrington III. Posted September 1, 2006 Posted September 1, 2006 One point though... we HAVEN'T thought of Pluto as a planet for very long, really. We didn't even know it was there until the 1930s or thereabouts, so its planethood may not be as ingrained in our culture as it seems. Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire

NOW... what *I* find interesting is... what is going to happen if and when humans are born on other planets (say, Mars) and Mars can no longer be part of the star chart mainly because they're standing on it.
