revolead Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 It has come to dawn upon me in the last several weeks, of how I really dislike MySpace and other social networking sites. While, I'll admit, I used to be part of them, and indeed, became addicted for too long (part of the reason I gave it up), I just do not see the point anymore. If I want to find people I have things in common with, I'll find a forum, like this one. And you guys are actually cool. If I want to message my friends, I can use that old fashioned thing called a cell phone. And if I want to make new friends, I can go to a bar. It just seems to me that these sort of sites are promoting no good for society. I've watched my generation's social ability go down. I've watched people's grades and grammar skills suffer. And I've watched my friends try to find love on these types of sites. While I'm not out on a crusade or vendetta to rid the Internet of such places, I have to ask why. What is it about social networking sites that have made them both the Elysium and the Hades of the Internet? And why are they so compelling, so much so that people do not even use the phone anymore? Shut up and play.
MaidensEye Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 A bunch of my friends all have myspaces and facebook profiles. I don't and will probably keep it that way. I couldn't agree more on the why's of it. Personal interaction, especially between musicians is always best person to person. The only use for myspace I've ever found was linking a friend's picture to another. That's about it.
King Kamehameha Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I have a myspace because it's the only way I have to get in contact with some people. I'm very careful with it, don't say where I live, don't try to meet "new friends" that I don't know. I leave mine open a lot of the day, people send me messages sometimes. I get more messages there than e-mail. I find it handy. Big Red 67 Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I spend too much time online right now. That said I still like to mess around on myspace. I guess that makes me a loser. hehe Most of the "friends" I have on myspace are musical or my real friends. I have a few friends with bicycle GAS too. I have found a really good friend on myspace. It surprised me. Big Red's Ride Blog
King Kamehameha Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Well actually, I have met someone on myspace, but I wasn't looking for them and they are so NOT creepy, I know for a fact that they are who they say, plus they give me bass help and stuff. Big Red 67 Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 It is sad that being female can make for fear. Well better safe then sorry. I hate the big dumps of webcab sex stuff I get. It is quite annouing. Who is this other myspace guy? Oh, wait. that would make me the creepy guy! hehehe Big Red's Ride Blog
Braxat Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 i dont really use myspace but i have an account. lot of spam from sucky punk bands and creepy people. I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.

Some sad human being invited me to a webcam group or something. She looked like a creepy loser. Hahaha the guy I'm talking about is Tony. Tony Franklin. He has some pretty amazing hair and he's a really nice guy. And you are definitely not a creepy person. Ricardo. Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I don't get any crap. My 'friends' list is just under 100; that may account for it vs. those who have 1000 'friends' plus. I've found it opens up communication better. I don't stay glued to it. I check it about once a day, get/send messages from faraway people (out of state, country) who can send a short comment or long message. It's fine, long as it isn't abused.

OT DAMN! Oh well. I guess it is not. I have missed my kids. (Long story) I have found my self intolerant of kids lately. So,... thanks! Big Red's Ride Blog
King Kamehameha Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 You're welcome. Intolerant of kids....that's because we're SOOOO ANNOYING. Plus I still laugh at potty words. Big Red 67 Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 That is one thing, the kid that has to argue ever point is the problem. I ain't hating. Just rubed the wrong way. This kid walked into my apartment during a breakup and would not leave me alone. Big Red's Ride Blog

My take? Some people seem to find it thrilling to show off sides of themselves that they wouldn't dare try on their closest friends and family. (Soft porn, anyone?) While I think this is okay for consenting adults, I don't like it when teens and little kids are involved. Young, impressionable minds can easily have their minds corrupted if they peruse these sites without some adult supervision. That being said, it is great for networking with other people, esp. those that don't live in your area. If I ever get a myspace, I'd use it to promote my artistic muses, and not much else. I have a blog for other stuff, and even then, I don't write all of my thoughts online. There's something worthy to be said for the analog version of a journal. Hmph, I just barely updated my geocities website, which I've had since 1999... sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
Warthog Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I signed-up just so I could send a message to a long lost friend that I saw on there doing an internet search (bassist for a band called "Gypsy Train", GA, SC, FL, mid 90's). Anyhow, within a day of signing-up I got all sorts of creepy messages and "I want to be your friend" stuff. I had just seen that show Stone Phillips did about online predators so I already had a bad view of myspace even before signing-up. Anyhow, it all felt so juvenile and creepy that I closed my account within 2 days. I'm a 35 year-old guy with a lot of stuff on my plate. I can really get by without another reason to be on the internet, especially one that is 99% geared toward those 21 and under. Didn't like it at all.

You say student's grades and grammar skills are suffering? Based on what evidence? Your personal experiences after four years of college at one school in Colorado? How far could student's grammar skills fall, when the average student had piss-poor grammar skills 10-15 years ago? From piss-poor to F*CKING piss-poor? It seems to me that you're being overly dramatic. Sure, these websites are a waste of time, but undergraduate students have ALWAYS found a way to waste time at a college.

Student's spelling and grammar, have suffered greatly, because of the internet. Here is one, of the hundreds of articles, that have been written on the subject. Click Here. Dr. Ellwood Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I really don't know anything about it but I have noticed allot of bands have a MySpace account and even some of our Forum members bands are on there. My question is have any of these bands seen any good results from having accounts on there? I mean as far as promotion of their bands? I wonder if there is a local kind of connection that would get local MySpace people to come to bands gigs? Can it be used as a good promo tool...anybody know?? http://www.thestringnetwork.com

Actually, there's been a very obvious backlash. Typing like an asshat on say, forums, where there's no rush, will get you flamed. Granted, you have to be at the right forum. But making people communicate in writing will help improve these skills, I think.

Gifthorse Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 I like Myspace. It is a good networking tool. My singer is a complete Myspace pimp. I swear he has to be juggling like 10 different hotties. I am back with my girlfriend again (on off on off) but I had no such luck. I must be the ugly one. Mackenzie hasn't had much luck with it either so I don't feel too bad!! http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
Braxat Posted August 13, 2006 Posted August 13, 2006 Nah, i like trivium ! there are a few that are like just starting but they spam hardcore, punk and emo music above all. its just sad, i mean i enjoy getting to know new artists and think its good for propaganda but i just hate the abuse they give it.
