Hardtail Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I jammed with a friend of mine today for virtually 4 hours straight. We ended up playing a couple of Doobie Brothers songs that I hadn't played in ages. It was a lot of fun. I forgot how cool this band was.
The Geoff Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 And also, their music - as on the albums - is not for the faint hearted. G. mdrs Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 The Doobie Bros cook!! The Captain and Me is one of my all time fav's. "Without You" is one of my favorite rockers ever. That whole album rocks. You should have called me up, Hard Tail.....I would have joined you.... Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. Hardtail Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 We played "China Grove", "Long Train Runnin'", and a little bit of "Take Me in Your Arms". We didn't do "Without You". That would have been a cool one. Maybe next time.
A String Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 We used to do a Doobie Bros. Medley with me on bass. ("Listen To The Music", "Long Train" and "China Grove".) It was some of the most enjoyable stuff I got to play. Really great songs, great harmonies and fun to play. Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music
mdrs Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 "China Groove", and "Without You".....rock music just BEGGING for a LP and a cranked Plexi! Who are we to deny that urge??? Hardtail Posted August 11, 2006 Author Posted August 11, 2006 I just dug up my old "Best of the Doobies" on "cassette" (I used to have it on 8 track) and am listening to it right now. Very cool stuff; it's especially cool stuff to tighten up your rhythm chops.
fantasticsound Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Seems like I've been playing those songs for 30 years... Oh! It's just about been that long. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd

marvar Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 The Doob's are still cooking- They have a couple of DVD's. One from about 10 yrs ago-"The Wildlife Concerts" and one from about 2 yrs ago- "Live at Wolftrap" check them out for a really entertaining concert. "Who's gonna teach the children about Chuck Berry?"
King Kamehameha Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 We're doing "China Grove" at camp. Fun song. Funky bass. I get a solo! Yaaaay! They're just so....GOOD. "My two Fender Basses, I just call them "Lesbos" because of the time they spend together in the closet."-Durockrolly This has been a Maisie production. (Directed in part by Spiderman)
Warthog Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Thanks for reminding me how good they are. I just sat down and learned "Without Love" in the past hour. Great jam...
Hound Dog Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Jesus is just alright with me! Yum, Yum! Eat em up!
Tedster Posted August 12, 2006 Posted August 12, 2006 Count me in as a Doobies fan. I dug how they could go from a rock groove to acoustic grooviness without missing a beat. Our acoustic band used to do a killer version of "Black Water". "Toulouse Street" is one of my faves. I learned it a long time ago...and then forgot what I used for a tuning. They had some odd tunings...and it just took some experimentation "Well, you can't play this unless you tune this like so, then..." that kind of thing. For "Black Water" I used DADGBD. Yeah Neil,it's as fresh and great as it's always was isn't it! What a great combination of musicians in that group. I'm thinking we have to do MORE DOOBIES! http://www.thestringnetwork.com
Hardtail Posted August 12, 2006 Author Posted August 12, 2006 South City Midnight Lady is another cool tune. Not a lot of guitar but still cool nonetheless.

In 1996 my father inlaw bought us tickets to see The Doobies open for Lynyrd Skynrd, 7th or 8th row. The Doobies absolutely rocked. Every song was a classic. What's more, Michael McDonald had recently moved to the Nashville area and agreed to do a set with them, so we heard them do What A Fool Believes, etc. with Michael! The sound level was perfect! Then Skynyrd came on. It was clear as a bell, but damn it must've been 110dB SPL in our seats from the first chord. (Praise the lord and pass the earplugs!) The Doobies portion of the show was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
