Bluesape Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Ya Mon! Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!
Hardtail Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Man! I think SRV has jammed with just about everyone. Has he ever jammed with Eddie Van Halen?

I don't know. I bet you he hasn't. If he had, the stage would have probably started on fire, there would have been great explosions in the sky and the universe as we know it would have blinked out of existence. The promoters know what they're doing when they keep some of these greats away from each other. Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music
BriBaby Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Thanks! Those with Jeff Healey and Albert King are cool too. Once I thought I saw you, in a crowded, hazy, bar........

Yeah, I was actually going to post the Albert King video first, but I really liked the Solo Stevie does in the video with Beck. Craig Stringnetwork on Facebook String Network Forum My Music

mdrs Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 As you know, Jeff Beck and SRV did a tour together. My younger bro saw them, and said that SRV "blew Jeff Beck off the stage". I never took his comment too seriously, because I think he was/is a bit biased. But, on that clip, didn't it sound like SRV's rig was much louder??? Maybe that's why he had that impression...... That's a great clip. Thanks Craig! Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. mdrs Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Oh no.....don't tell anybody , but Jimmy Vaughn slips in for a bit on "Wham" from Hawaii '84. Rut Roh..... Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. mdrs Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 So, did SRV have the most powerful fretboard fingers ever, or what? I'm pretty sure he played something like .13's too!! Yeah but I'm not sure if that was SRV's gig or Beck's gig? if it was SRV's gig then he was setup in the mix well of coarse, and Jeff was a add in and sometimes that happens. Yep SRV had monster hands and the half tone drop in his tuning helps too. Wow sure am glad that clip didn't include JV's segment, a very prudent video production choice!! http://www.thestringnetwork.com

Big Red 67 Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I love it. Jeff got the surf foam green on that strat!! Love that color! Big Red's Ride Blog
Fumblyfingers Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 I saw that tour...had really good industry seats for it....it was incredible. One thing that is so cool about this video is how reserved Beck is. He seems quite happy to provide ground cover for Stevie and not even attempt to steal his show. His solo was shorter and he totally supported SRV....the sign of both a true professional and a gentleman.
mdrs Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Amen. I've never seen Jeff Beck live, but did score some tickets for the Hammerstein Ballroom, in NYC. I really can't wait to see him. Big Red 67 Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I was sooo impressed with Jeff's ablity to back up Steve!!! He is just sooo good! Big Red's Ride Blog
fantasticsound Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 I saw that tour in Milwaukee. SRV was unbearably loud.. and I was checking tickets in the nosebleed seats. A teacher of mine at Columbia mixed for Stevie and said he required 120dB SPL at his ears. That's the threshold of pain for people who haven't ruined their hearing by playing too loud so long. They had to run the FOH sound way up to cover the monitor rig in the house. It was still great to see Stevie live and Jeff, too. They traded off headlining and came out to jam together on the encore, as shown. About the seafoam green strat.. That was Jeff's signature model, which was relatively new at the time of this tour. It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
Big Red 67 Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 That is why Jeff sounds so low and washed in verb. Mine surf foam is cooler. I got a matching headstock!!! nananana Big Red's Ride Blog
King Kamehameha Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Whenever I see this thread I think of my Strat and my friend's Les Paul because they are named Jeff and Stevie. Zephyr Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Ahhhhhhhh, the vid cuts off after a minute and a half, oh this is infuriating. Never argue with an idiot. They'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=810593 http://www.myspace.com/dandelavega
Gifthorse Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I am partial to Beck because to me he is more of an innovator. SRV sounds cool in this. Couple kickass fast blues licks. They are both awesome players, but Stevie didn't seem to leave a whole lot of room for Beck. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
Guitar55 Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 I saw Beck about 5 years ago and will see him again in a small club here in NJ on 9/11. On that video, I got the same impression as FUmbly, that Jeff was doing a great job of backing up SRV.

fantasticsound Posted August 11, 2006 Posted August 11, 2006 Originally posted by flagshipmile: Hey Fantastic, who did you like more? I wish that were easy to answer. I was really pumped to see both of them, but moreso Stevie Ray. It was a huge disappointment that I could barely make out songs with earplugs in due to the sound levels. Jeff's set was at a much more reasonable level and, therefore, was more enjoyable on the whole. But I've always been a fan of particular songs by Jeff. It was good to hear some relatively new stuff mixed in with the old. People Get Ready, off the previous album, was cool but it just wasn't the same without Rod singing it. I love that version and Jeff's playing was fantastic! It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman Soundclick fntstcsnd
curioman Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 I saw this tour when it stopped in Sacramento, CA in '89. Both Vaughan and Beck were fantastic. I thought Beck had a particularly good night and his sound and band were impeccable. (I've heard that Beck is either on or off... well, that night he was on!) This was in support of his Guitar Shop record. There's a lot of space on that record that he filled in when playing live. It made the live show dynamic and engaging. This show introduced me to SRV, who became a huge inspiration afterwards. This concert was the first I ever saw and one of the most memorable in my life. Incredible musicians both! The only disappointment was that Stevie and Jeff only came out to play one song together at the end. It would have been cool if they had jammed on a couple more. Thanks for the post. (MTV playing music?! What a concept!) http://curiomusic.com
