John292
Hey, this is my first post, and the reason I am posting is to ask a question for some of the modders on here, or anyone else that might know how to do this. I need to know step by step on how to add a standby switch to my valve jr head, this is the mod I want to learn to do...it shouldn't be too hard, but this is a first mod for me...and I haven't found any sites to offer and help on this, step-by-step...im stupid like that lol. I must know all details. Also explain the discharge of caps to me. Heres the switch I had in mind - http://www.tubedepot.com/p-110-63.html Thanks for any help I may recieve
miroslav
Hi I've done the mod to mine (and I plan on doing it to the second one I bought). I posted the process with basic instructions....it's not hard to do. Oh...you have to make sure the toggle switch is capable of handling 260V. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important." John292
I just got a 250...why won't that work? You say it has to be a 260.

It's not a question of "won't work"...it's a question of risk. If you look at my instructions in the link I posted... ...you can see that the T2 wire is a 260V line...and that's the one that the standby switch needs to be cut into. So...will 250V work...yeah. Can it get fried at some point...yeah. I got a toggle that was rated for 270V...as I didn't want to have to ever put it in a second time. Your call... 250V could be considered "close enough" by many folks... ....but I like to be wrong on the safe side. I got my switch at True Value Hardware...it's meant for a heavy duty electric motor usage. That puppy will NEVER fail. Cost me about $5... miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
John292
Ok, well im gonna try the 250, because I looked for a 260 and they didn't have one at my hardware store..I mean, its 10 volts off...it's really close to 260...you are smart for being safe, but im gonna try it and take a risk, what will I hurt if it DID fry? Wouldn't the switch just render useless and not hurt the amp? Also, I need to know how to discharge the caps, and what wire to solder the switch to, I have 2 wires on my switch, where do I solder them at. Sorry for the commas and the crappy english
miroslav
There are probably many detailed instructions on proper cap draining on the web...just Google it. But bringing the positive side of the filter caps to ground...using a jumper wire with shielded alligator clips...is the basic operation. You can check the caps with a voltage meter...and that will tell you if they are drained or not. As far as the wire splicing instructions...go to the link I provided in my second post...it's all there. T2 (red) goes from the tranny to the PCB. You cut it about midpoint. One wire from the toggle switch gets soldered to one end of the T2 cut wire...and the second switch wire goes to the other end. Make sure you put some heat shrink tube insulation over the cut/soldered pointsdont just tape it with electricians tape. You should have gotten a basic signal flow diagram with your switch telling you which end is In and which is Out... If you feel queasy about doing this...DON'T...get someone with a little electronics experience to help you out with the hands-on work. Alsomake sure you pick the right spot on the face plate to drill the hole. I put mine to the right of the power switchthat way I didnt have to go far with the wires. Just dont drill too far to the right as it will hit into the front tolex covered front. Just mark it from the outside before you pull out the chassis. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important." John292
Thanks for the help, I finally understand, I already have some heat strink with me, and instead of drilling a new hole, im gonna try and put the switch in an unused hole on the back, probably take the 16 OHM plug out, and put the switch in there. Also, can't I just take a screw driver and touch the filter caps to drain them?..im just cutting the wire and soldering it..I shouldn't get shocked..Im not gonna be rubbing the components all over my body lol. There are alot of sites that do explain it..but they feed me full of crap and beat around the tree trying to explain a simple process. Also, my switch says this on the back of the package - '3A @ 125VVACL' '6A @ 125V' '3A @ 250v' And one more thing, what if it gets fried, what will it fry, the switch, or an amp component, it should just be the switch right?
