Braxat Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Ok, so you all know im gonna have some cash to spend on whatever i want ( Bday =] ), im gonna have around 300-400dlls ( cuz i have to pay the party... ) neways, i was thinking of buying a violin, but it got me thinking, why buy and start learning violing when i suck so much at a guitar, might as well improve my guitar / pedal / amp collection and keep grinding down that instead of getting a violing to pull practice time away from the guitar. so, what would you recommend i get? some pedals? I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
revolead Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Interesting question. But I agree with you. Buying a violin just to start isn't really a great idea unless you're genuinely bored with guitar. Sometimes, if I'm in a slump, buying a pedal or new guitar or something can help force me to practice. Also, instructional videos do the same thing. So, I'd get a mid-priced pedal and an instructional video. Then, you'll wanna pratice. Shut up and play.
alittlebatty Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Ben,are you a Leo? I agree with revo-another instrument will take away guitar time(tho its enjoyable time!) I know this from playing mandolin. I don't know what all you have at the moment, but maybe recording software for your PC? Make a list & start checking it twice...one side of the list "wants" & the other "needs" If the needs list entails stuff you can afford without b day $$,then go for the wants. And be sure to comparison shop.
Braxat Posted July 29, 2006 Author Posted July 29, 2006 hmm i am a leo =] agoust the 6th ( best day ever!) recording software... i'm not to sure about that since i would not give it much use and i can play around with what i have now ( windows thing thing ) haha yea, the wants is what im gonna go for since its the day i can blow off the money without 'But's' from my mom ( she dosent really like the idea of more than 1 guitar... she dosent understand... lol ) I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
alittlebatty Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Ahhhh but Ben-it's your b-day,& should you choose a guitar, remind her you want your gift to be one you'll truly cherish & remember. (Yes,I can be very good at these things) After all it's your b day $$ & what you get is your business. I'm a Leo too,Aug 13th. You could get a really loud amp~that'll make em happy ;-)
Braxat Posted July 29, 2006 Author Posted July 29, 2006 haha she dosent mind another guitar from bday but if i try getting it from work money, ish, i think it would be easier to nutter myself than convince her. amp im considering ... one with all those cool and useless integrated sounds lol ( pedals > those things ) BUT she would be happy as much as screaming " GOOD LORD USE THE HEADPHONES!" lol I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
Justus A. Picker Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Get an acoustic guitar, your parents will appreciate it, and you'll score tons more chicks just strumming and singing than you will playing leads! Seagull makes some nice boxes in that price range. http://www.smokedsalmonband.com/exile/exile1.jpg
revolead Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Justus, I'm not sure one should play guitar just to pick up chicks. I hate guys that do that. They suck because they only practice like 2 songs, and then you hear them over and over again. Besides, any girl I've ever seen who is willing to drool over a hippie-playing acoustic strummer isn't worth scoring. Shut up and play.
Ricardo. Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 I think Justus was kidding on that part Anyways, I am for buying a violin. Multi-instrumentalism is awesome. It opens up new opportunities in bands and jamming. You also learn the inner workings of violin, and I'm sure that will help your guitar playing.
alittlebatty Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 I think Justus was definately kidding,& what's interesting as a chick who playes guitar,I don't know if it helps with guys or not. If anything,I think it tends to make them a little intimidated of you-the non musician ones, anyway. Hey Ben! You could buy me a guitar for my bday with your bday money!
revolead Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 I'm not all pissy or anything. We just used to have a bass player who essentially joined the band for that reason. Never showed up to practice and expected to use bass to get chicks. Then, I went to college and saw exactly what I described there, and it just got old, that's all. No hard feelings. Shut up and play.
The Geoff Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Get yourself a multi-function pedal. I got one off ebay and haven't had as much fun since I bought the last one.......... Sad, isn't it? G. caprae Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 LESSONS! If you suck, buy lessons. You'll get more out of it than a peddle, guitar, amp or strings. Raise your children and spoil your grandchildren. Spoil your children and raise your grandchildren.
Braxat Posted July 29, 2006 Author Posted July 29, 2006 Multi-fucntional pedal. multi part word. im in. lol =] sadly enough, one of the reasons i started playing guitar was to impress a girl i was in love with for 5 years straigh in secondary 2, she used to play keyboard. ( i dont play for that reason nemore, infact i try not to play infront of my friends unless they ask me to, some dont like the idea of not having my full attentiong... ) grr the guitar i liked i forgot the name, can u believe it!? a forumite was selling one also... let me just think real hard and get back to you on the name. i have an acoustic, that one my parents have no problem with, on the contarry from the electric my mom dosent want me to stop playing but i do fingerpicking. That would be my advice, too. A couple of years ago, I took piano and vocal lessons from the same teacher. She had a degree in music ed., and was very open to helping me learn songs I liked. Some great players go back to their teachers now and then. It gives you a perspective of your playing that you can't duplicate. Another idea might be some sort of simple recording setup. I got my son a Fender G-Dec for Christmas last year and I think I wanted it worse than he did. This amp has a lot of simulations, a headphone jack and CD input. It has a small loop sampler, too, so you can record a track, then play another part along with it. I think that the sample engine may be so close to other more expensive Fender products that they didn't put a direct out, so you could use it like a pod plugged into a PA or other amp. Braxat Posted July 30, 2006 Author Posted July 30, 2006 but i do take classes... which reminds me, i got classes monday and i need to tuned my guitar to droped c which will be pain thanks to the locks and floating bridge. I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
Tone Taster Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 Order a Blackstone Mosfet pedal blackstoneappliances.com
Xplorer Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 Braxat, you should look at the Korg Pandora's. They are an excellent little unit for practicing. They sound great with headphones, so you don't need to worry about amplifiny any sour notes! There is also a nice little drum machine in there to jam along with. I had one of these units and loved it. I got rid of it to upgrade on an amp. I was an idiot for trading it in. (could be another thread of shame!) What a horrible night to have a curse.
Braxat Posted July 30, 2006 Author Posted July 30, 2006 Korg pandora? im gonna look it up as soon as i get off work. Hey, G, u got any name on the mutlifunctional pedal i can look up? the guitar i want/wantes is a godin =] I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
alittlebatty Posted July 30, 2006 Posted July 30, 2006 I'm gonna check out the Korg too-never thought of that, but I have considered multifunctional pedals. Revo-I knew you weren't being pissy........

The chicks ( as well as money from gigging) are simply a bonus. I hate guys that do that. They suck because they only practice like 2 songs, and then you hear them over and over again. You obviously know the wrong hippies! I can easily do 3 or four hours of acoustic singer/songwriter type stuff, more if you add in instrumental acoustic stuff. It's just another aspect of being a musician. It's also easier to have jam session while camping if you're on acoustic. Plexi's just don't backpack easily. Besides, any girl I've ever seen who is willing to drool over a hippie-playing acoustic strummer isn't worth scoring. You REALLY need to get out more! Seriously, I was really just encouraging Braxat to look at a different aspect of GAS. You can never have too many acoustics..... http://www.smokedsalmonband.com/exile/exile1.jpg
revolead Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 Justus, when I say hippie, I mean hippie. There's acoustic picking, and then there's hippie picking. Also, did I miss the line for the good-looking women who like stupid guitar-playing idiots? Because I would totally qualify. Unless, of course, you honestly think they're not into lead players. Shut up and play.
