Chad Thorne Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 You can answer this question for me, if you would. I enjoy when Mike Myers does a Scottish character, whether it's Fat Bastard in Austin Powers or Dad in "So I Married An Axe Murderer" ("We have a piper down!"). How's his accent? Good enough to fool a real Scot, or not quite?
Bluesape Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I think Geoff mentioned being away for a few days. I think Myers's burr is convincing enough for the seriousness of his films. Never a DUH! moment! Well, almost never. OK, OK! Sometimes never!

The Geoff Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 I'm here. Mr Myers' Scottish accent fell upon the ear with all the elegance of a gazelle peeing into an empty tin can whilst balancing on a giraffe's head. 'Nuff said. (A bit like Scotty in Star Trek, Cap'n). But I've heard worse. Or do you have the sense that he was trying to faithfully reproduce a Scottish accent and failed badly? I think it's an attitude men develop due to wearing skirts. Scottish men have to wear kilts. Sheep can hear zippers...
The Geoff Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 He was going for a Glasgow accent, which is a bit of a law unto itself. I come from Glasgow, or just nearby and I can pick which side of Glasgow someone was born on. Myers made what we might call a gallant effort, but to a native speaker, he was just trying too hard. He was over-emphasising certain vowels/consonants and probably was a little too stacatto too. Just not quite fluid enough. I suppose it's always like that when a native speaker of any accent hears someone trying to 'put it on' - I mean, I bet Hugh Laurie sounds just like that to you in the US. G.
