Pappy P Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Basic Questions: How often do you guys have your frets redressed/recrowned? I noticed that the frets on my Squire Strat are looking a little worn after only about 3 and a half years. Do any of you guys do your own fret work? www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click
Pappy P Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 Or, I dare you to come up with any off color remarks about frets. This has to be a safe topic! Maybe I am fretting too much, I can only think of a few lame puns myself. www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click
Steevo Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I've never done any fretwork myself. I did find this on the Gibson website: Fret Polish from Gibson Website I've got a guitar that needs it, but it is quite valuable so I'm not inclined to attempt it myself. Can any of you Nashville cats recommend someone??
The Geoff Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 OK, I promise I won't make any funny remarks....... I've replaced a fret (very successfully) and I've stoned, crowned and polished them. I did this as a guitar I bought had a deeply pitted third fret. It was *very* successful. Again, I point to Dan Erlewine's book. I just followed the advice in that. I was sure to use masking tape between the frets. I used a good grade Olive Oil on the stone and I DIDN'T PUSH DOWN - I just moved it round under its own weight, although it took a while. I then crowned the frets with a small file, before polishing them with fine steel wool. All seemed to work out nicely. So you want to have stoned frets, do you Geoff "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the World will know Peace": Jimi Hendrix http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=738517&content=music The Geoff - blame Caevan!!!
Pappy P Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 I need to buy that book. I've always wanted to do that stuff myself. I wanted to push back the shroud of mystery. I'm sure it must be an art form in itself though. www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click
stamplicker Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Good point, If you don't rub your frets the right way? will you wear them out quicker? Would it be safe to say your Guitar would kick you to the couch? if you miss-treat them I find that it's always good to have them Well Lubricated prior to stringing them... Stay Smoother and last longer. As well as treating the Wood too. Also good to caress them really gently with your fingers to make sure they're right to the touch before getting all freaky and nasty with the solos MagicStomp Soundbites Soundclick Rambles Haunted Art

Ol Boy Rivers Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Never done fret work. Personally stuff like that for me is best left to the professionals. I set up my guitar completly, Including installing new pots and switches on my strat. Thats enough for me. Never trouble trouble till' trouble troubles you.
