What's funny, N a sorta-kinda way, izzat both Cobain & Novoselic were credited by some as having quite negative opinions about him.

He also did a SNL gig with Tom Petty & the kFreakin' Heartbreakers once...

Was this a new show?

I've got two previous appearances taped and they're terrific. The second was where Jim

Carry just jumped out on stage and played the leg.

On Dave being under appreciated or recognized.... I thought he did a great job with Nirvana and was every bit as important as the others.

I don't have much to say about Kurt. Poor playing, average compositions, good writing and perfect timing.

Dave must have had squirels running circles through his head as he held this all inside until the time was his to break free.

Deep Thoughts from the Shallow Pool... brings you..

What if:

What if Courtney Love was hit by a bus and killed before she met Kurt Cobain?...

Hmmmmm...

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.

Yeah...in my fanatasy, it would have probably gone like this:

- There would have never been a band named Hole.

- Pamela Andersons Comedy Central roast would have been more enjoyable to watch.

- Kurt Cobain would likely still be alive. (They can say what they want about his suicide. I think she killed him.)

- Nirvana would still be a group, but with Taylor Hawkins as the drummer. (Grohl and Taylor's drumming styles are very similar, therefore he would have been a natural to replace Grohl in the band.)

- The Foo Fighters would still be a group, but with Tommy Lee as the drummer, and out selling Nirvana. (Tommy Lee was looking for a reason to leave the Crue in 1997 about the same time Grohl was going through drummers, but before landing Hawkins. Tommy's hard hitting playing style would fit into Dave's writing, nicely.)

Oh shut up!...I can dream, can't I? :D

Grohl is one of my heros. He is a true musical badass. One of the great talents ever in rock music.

I saw them last Sept and he was incredible. He was GOING SICK the whole show. At one point I lost track of him. Then he was in the middle of Joe louis and he ran to the front of the stage while everyone chased him. He didn't go off at all and he was doing those screams running around. Whenever someone has a great scream--look out! The drummer Taylor Hawkins was incredible too and has a great voice to boot..

One reason Dave Grohl is a genius is that he sees the whole picture. Being a drummer this gives him a unique perspective in building a song. I think he is a far more legendary talent than Kurt Cobain and over time if Kurt had lived we would have seen his role more predominant in that band and in his solo stuff. Dave Grohl is nutz talented. He is like a Stevie Wonder playing hard rock or something. I mean he can do it all!! I love his voice too, it is totally unique and easy to listen too.

The early Foo Fighter's sounded Nirvana influenced but he has forged a complete identity all his own. Dave Grohl is a complete super star beyond recognition. I hear he is a totally cool guy too and complete goof ball)

Bored the crap out of me. I changed channels. Sorry, but, no definition on the guitar sounds, just mush, no crafting of the interrelationship between the 2 guitar parts, no use of dynamics, no songwriting craft in terms of contrasting sections to set up a tension & release between verse & chorus or bridge. Melodic interest? Not! Why is this considered good pop music?

Yeah no doubt, because he had some talent, no fit with Cobain.

You know Scott, that's a great question! Maybe because by comparison to other pop things it's somehow better?? kinda the best of the worse?

No, I really don't know their stuff, just a couple tracks I've heard here & there on TV. I'm totally open to being convinced otherwise, but what they played on Saturday Night Live didn't hit any of my pleasure centers.

Ditto. Though I was never a Nirvana fan I still think the guy had the right not to get his head blown off by his wife and live to see his little girl grow up.

Re: Foo Fighters: I don't really listen to them either but whenever I've seen them on T.V. I though they were head & shoulders above other contemporary rock bands.

I think if I woke up & found myself married to Courtney Love I'd run as fast as I could to find the shotgun in the house.

While I've heard some stuff by the FFs that I like (most notably something I think was called "Flying Home" (or maybe a similar title...) & I find Grohl a talented multiple position in-fielder, I can also see the point that Scott F. makes: they're not the best players in the world, even within the genre they usually perform.

Grohl's a good/OK guitarist, a good singer (better than many similar bands have) & a very good rock drummer...plus he chews gum while singing, not as easy as it looks!

He's also clearly the main man in the band, top to bottom.

It's always a problem when someone fails to hire better players than themself for other positions.

What I most like is that they have a fairly accessible pop/rock sound and their tunes have some melodic quality, something that a lotta grungers lack, to be honest.

I hardly want to divert this thread into a debate on a topic on which some clearly have set opinions (& which will therefore never be more than a recitation of preconceptions) but I really don't understand those who insist that Kurt Cobain couldn't have killed himself.

He had a long record of depression & had even, indisputably, tried to kill himself by OD not long before his final demise. Why so hard to believe he di himself in?

All this biz about Courtney Love is just slagging an easy target.

See I think Grohl isn't just a good drummer.

I think he is legendary good. He has energy, style, and above all his beats always fit the song like a glove and give it more uniqueness---you gotta believe that Grohl influences Taylor Hawkins to play in the Foo's songs. I have heard Taylor Hawkins refer to him as the best. Taylor is no slouch. He was incredible live when I saw them.

His drums on Queens of the Stoneage are great.

Tom Petty asked Grohl to join the Heartbreakers, I mean he could get anyone!!

Stylistically in my world he is one of the best drummers out.

I know alot of drummers that worship him. To me his playing style is easier for me to absorb than say the guy from Tool that everyone LOVES so much. I know the guy in Tool may be more of a technician, I just like Grohl's style more.

At that level it is personal preference of course.
