Dr. Ellwood Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I used to see Goth looking people all over the place. You know those baggy pants, always black, with tons of chains and body piercing attatched to other body piercings, black lipstick, black fingernails, dyed black hair, tons of black eye makeup and fright white skin tone. Anyway is it just me or has this all gone away? Has the music that drove this look or style gone away? Do you still see this kind of look in your part of the county or in your part of the world? http://www.thestringnetwork.com
LPCustom Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I didn't realize it was ever _in_ fashion. And, yeah, I still see them occasionally hanging out at the mall. Born on the Bayou
Braxat Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Well, In theory, "Goths" dont use baggy pants, more like tight ususally leather. it was never A fashion but i still see them around in school and all. I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
The Bear Jew Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Goth types are always around... they just don't like to come out in the daytime. I'm kidding... but they are always around. Ok but the ones around here (Detroit) are a little different, not so much leather at all but HUGE baggy pants and black baggy shirts not tucked in and black combat boots. Maybe they aren't Goths but they have always looked the same around here. http://www.thestringnetwork.com

Xplorer Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I wore all black in the late 80's until now. Now I'll wear blue jeans and a black shirt (like right now). Goth has taken on a whole new meaning. I've never considered myself to be Goth, but I've always thought 'gothic' was not necessarily leather steel and make-up. I guess the style changes all the time. I see alot of kids who would be wearing torn jeans with a long sleeve shirt under a Slayer or Metallica tee 15 years ago are now wearing way way big pants, tons of chains, the 1980's arm wear (bandanas, fingerless gloves, thick arm bands), and a little black makeup around their eyes. I think it's cool they can still piss off the hardcore old timers. They really want to know that someone out there is saying, 'I don't get it", because in their eye's it gives them definition and distance at the same time. Come on Friday, hurry up and end! I got drinking to do! What a horrible night to have a curse.
BillWelcome Home Studios Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 it was never in fashion... it always has been and remains a niche market. The styles will wax and wane.... I see a lot of goth kids near me, but there is a capa high school within a block of my apartment. The Bear Jew Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 The definition of goth changes over the years... So many different types of dark music are available so widely these days that folks don't tend to label themselves as stringently anymore. If you really want to get into it, there are so many sub-sects. Just take my word for it, it's still out there, and it's not going away. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu

But there comes a point of diminishing returns where you have to stop and ask yourself just how far are you going to go with body mutilations and out-and-out extreme "clown-suits" ...just to have a personal "style"? My point being...if all of a sudden, smearing dog poop on you forehead was a way to "shock" people and to give your "inner self" some definition and distance... ...would that make it cool??? Would that really remove the stupidity factor from smearing dog poop on your forehead??? I know its hard to judge sometimes when you are on the outside loooking inbut I do believe that throughout the ages there have always been some silly styles that at the time appeared to be quite cool and a decade later people scratched their heads over it, realizing just how ridiculous they looked! I think todaymore than everthere is a need for a lot of the younger crowd to show strong individualityidentifyand so they tend to push style to very weirdand sometimes downright silly extremes. But its not just the young. I find the current trend in some womens shoes to be laughable!( Dont get me wrongI dont have a thing for womens shoes. ) Damnwhen I see them wearing those 16 inch pointsI just cant help busting out laughing. What the hell is that? You got a dress shoe that extends MANY inches beyond where your toes endand its not just a basic pointed toe. Some designer came out with that shit JUST so they can get a lot of women to run out and buy the new style.and no one ever stopped to notice how silly they really look. But heythats just my opinion. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
Braxat Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 imo as miroslav just said, these " costumes " are as silly as a tattoo i mean, whats the point really? I Am But A Solution In Search Of A Problem.
Hardtail Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Goth is certainly silly but so are most fads I've seen in my lifetime. I'm still shaking my head at the big hair 80s days when men did their best to look like women.
Dr. Ellwood Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 "I think it's cool they can still piss off the hardcore old timers." But do they? really I mean who really cares? Maybe their parents do but nobody else cares I don't think, it's just a fashion statement isn't it? http://www.thestringnetwork.com

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that it was a cross over from punk. The kids who had mohawks in the 80's sort of converted to Goth in the 90's. That is just a guess though... alittlebatty Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 How can something that's undead ever actually die? Goth is far from dead-tho what Ellwood is describing isn't considered Gothic as far as I've seen out here. There's a mag called Gothic Beauty that is just amazing...and remember there's different styles of Goth-like Romantic (velvets) and the more fun style like Abbey on Navy CIS (I wear both styles)

Which is why I said that smearing dog pooh on your forehead can ALSO piss a lot of people off...but... you wouldn't run out to do it...would you? Like ellwood said...these days...nobody cares! So if you or anyone else is doing all that JUST because you think someone else cares and because you are trying to piss them off... ...don't you think that's a pretty weak reason to do it...? Heck...if you are going to make a fashion statement...then do it for yourself...don't do it for someone else! As someone pointed outmaybe(?) you are only going to piss off you parentsat best (or worst). And most kids get over trying to piss off their parents (and the people around them)when they grow into young adulthoodand when realize that being an individual is very OK but being totally weirdwellis weird. Which brings me back to the dog poop. If its ONLY about shock valueabout how to make people go Oh my, check him out! then the body mutilations and the clown suits are no different than the dog poop since its NOT about making a fashion statementbut rather its only to shock and to piss people off. And IMOthats a poor reason Even back in the 60s when the hippies were prevalent...I never much cared for those people that were out JUST to piss off the establishment. HeckI liked a lot of the exotic fashions and that psychedelic lookall the colors, etc but I wouldnt do it JUST to piss someone else off. I would do it because I enjoyed it. I would hope a lot of the Goth kids are doing it for other reasons than to piss people off miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
Justus A. Picker Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I'm still a hippie. That's still "fashionable", right? http://www.smokedsalmonband.com/exile/exile1.jpg
The Bear Jew Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I wonder how it all started? was it music that started it? or was it the film industry that did? Was it a out shoot of Punk or a certain kind of Punk? Well.. in a word, yes. It came from punk music. The whole goth thing pretty much branched off of the end of the early punk era--early '80s. We're talking about Bauhaus, Souxie And The Banshees, 45 Grave and Christian Death. Some of these bands developed at the same time as late-era punk bands like The Sex Pistols and The Clash. It's just a darker, spookier aspect of punk rock--perhaps with influences more in line with the "Space Oddity" style of David Bowie then his "Suffragette City" days. Old-school goth tends to be a little slower and not quite as chaotic as punk... although it can be quite abrasive. These days, goth has been crossed with electronic music, industrial, metal, folk, etc, etc, but it's really pointless to subdivide the genre too much unless you're really into it and curious. But a lot of gothy-lookin' kids these days would be pretty annoyed if you classified them as goth. They have all kinds of other names for themselves... Folks love to categorize. \m/ Erik "To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." --Sun Tzu
alittlebatty Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 This Goth adult does it cause she loves it.....and I get a kick out of startling people out of the daze they get into when out & about. Wakes em up,you know?
