King Kamehameha Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 First thing- my bass gig is today! My mom always does a video so I'll figure out how to get some of that up. I have butterflies in my stomach. No, they're red ants. Aaaaaanyway, Second thing- I have been so completely bitten by the guitar bug. My strat is so beautiful and I have to be touching it all the time. I even sleep with it at night. I can't wait for guitar lessons, and they're even twice a week. I'm so happy when I figure out things with chords! How come bass never did this for me? Well, I love guitar! Guitarzan Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 that is too cool. bass is fun to play live though, but i understand how guitar can consume your thoughts. i always have some guitarplayer mags at work. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will

King Kamehameha Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Oh god I have to play Newborn by Muse--have you HEARD that BASSLINE? AHHH! It's not hard to do a coupla times, but my stamina for that sorta thing is low. Lucky for me (not) there's another bassist who's in ALL my classes. Well on this song I guess it is lucky because if I have to stop for a minute he can keep going. At least he isn't perfect, he has as little stamina as I do. But we usually don't fall out at the same time. The thing that gets me is that the fingering goes 13131313 the first time, and then switches to 13231323. Drives me nuts, cause I always end up doing 13321332. Hung Up is a little hard on the hands (as in, my pinky bends funny after it), but it's so much fun. On our "test crowd," we got everyone dancing. Heroes is just plain joy to do. There's so much else I could say, but it'd bore ya and I'm hungry. King Kamehameha Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 I just got home from the gig (well really the arts festival). I have two ABSOLUTELY HUGE blisters on my bass fingers (right hand). Seriously, I can't move the mouse on my laptop around. I am so dehydrated even though I drank a bajillion gallons of water. And poured a half-bajillion over my head. We jammed at the end of the day, too. It was pretty sweet. I have to go take a shower. Pictures and maybe video soon. King Kamehameha Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 The gig was smooth, rich, and creamy. Am I making you want saka mook? Well, actually, I messed up a fair amount, but I don't think most people noticed. Jerkface Mcgee (other bassist) covered me up. It was a camp arts festival, but a good bit of the town came, not just camp families, I think. Good turnout this session, and good weather. I've got another in a month. revolead Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 Out of curiosity, do you play another instrument? I used to play bass, and like you, I switched to guitar for all the right reasons. I just got bored of the same patterns over and over. Plus, I realized sfter a couple months of bass playing that I was starting to like to play melodies, and well, bass makes that hard. Prior to bass, I play trumpet for years. There was a joke running around our high school band that all trumpet players were selfish and thought they were the center of the universe. When I found out this was true (I was also playing bass on the side at the time), I switched to guitar. By then, I knew they were wrong. Guitarists know they're the center of the universe. Shut up and play.
Big Red 67 Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 It is even harder to be melodically proficiency then to just be a "bass" player. that is why Jaco is Jaco. I love playing any thing I can make a noise with. I should do a noise album! Sorry if you read this before spell check! Big Red's Ride Blog
King Kamehameha Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 Yeah, I started coming up with melodies on my bass, and...guitar is serious magic! I love jamming with people and improvising. Woah. These blisters make it hard to TYPE. I am growing two extra fingers off the top of my other ones. That is how disgusting this is. Oh yeah, and I used to have a blister on one of those fingers, but half came off, and then another blister grew under it, so there's a mommy blister and a baby blister! And sister blister on the side hurts like hell too. You SURE you want chocolate milk now? Eric Iverson Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 It IS possible to play beautiful melodies on bass... check out Paul McCartney with the Beatles or Chris Hillman with the Byrds... and the Motown guy, whose name escapes me at the moment, was great, too! And then some of the jazz bassists and Bach's bass lines come to mind. Of course, these lines might not work in punk rock...
King Kamehameha Posted July 22, 2006 Author Posted July 22, 2006 It IS possible, but I just didn't have the range I needed, and I like chords.
