Tedster Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 And not: Enter Smoke on the Sandman. As usual, my Alzheimered mind goes blank. I'm looking for ideas for beginners' level riff-based chunka chunka stuff, along the lines of, say, Judas Priest "Another Think Coming" (or "Thing" or whatever the heckitis). Justus A. Picker Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 You can reduce "Them Changes" down to just the bass line riff and pull it off. http://www.smokedsalmonband.com/exile/exile1.jpg

Tedster Posted July 18, 2006 Author Posted July 18, 2006 Yup. A young Goth gal. She was in my group guitar class. She seemed to have a bit on the ball, and her parents asked if I'd teach her. If I'm gonna teach private lessons, I want to see some dedication first. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

picker Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 Molly Hatchet's Dreams(I'll Never See). It doesn't get more simple or riff-based than that. Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.
stamplicker Posted July 18, 2006 Posted July 18, 2006 AHhhhhhhhh GOTH!.. see you should have been more specifical hehe.. Try Maryilyn Manson's - Beautiful People perrrty much same riff all the way through.. but might intreg. her more? Godsmack - Greed? MagicStomp Soundbites Soundclick Rambles Haunted Art

revolead Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Tedster - Check out some of Metallica's older stuff. She won't be able to play it all, or even well, right away obviously, but some of the stuff is a good start. "Fade to Black," "One," and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" all have fairly simple riffs that can be learned early on with a bit of practice. Just avoid anything post-And Justice For All. That's how you end up with Enter Smoke on the Sandman. Also, try "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest, "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, or some of the other 80s/early 90s stuff. And ask her if she likes Papa Roach. She may. If she does, I can give you some songs. You may not like em, but she could. They helped me learn to play, so I figure what the heck. Shut up and play.
rw2003 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 Most of the songs mentioned already are great suggestions. How 'bout these... Beatles: Happy Birthday Black Sabbath.. Black Sabbath; Paranoid; Iron Man; Into the Void; Rat Salad Led Zep... Communication Breakdown; Black Dog; Moby Dick; Heartbreaker Kinks/VH... You Really Got Me Johnny Lidd & the Pirates/The Who... Shakin' All Over Link Ray... Rumble Mountain... Mississippi Queen Neil Young... Cinnamon Girl Hendrix... Manic Depression Aerosmith... Walk This Way Alice Cooper... School's Out Nirvana... Lake of Fire (cover off Unplugged) Ramones... Blitzkreig Bop and all their other songs! "Spend all day doing nothing But we sure do it well" - Huck Johns from 'Oh Yeah' Click to Listen to Oh yeah
henrysb3 Posted July 19, 2006 Posted July 19, 2006 It's not goth, but "Crossroad" has a number of different riffs, depending on who is covering it. He not busy being born Is busy dyin'. ...Bob Dylan
Tedster Posted July 19, 2006 Author Posted July 19, 2006 Good stuff here...and a lot of stuff I've known about but haven't thought of for awhile. Which is the point... Have you ever sat down with a guitar and this happens? Buddy: Play something. You: Uh...okay..what? Buddy: I dunno...hmmmm...got any ideas? You: Uhhhh...(mind scanning a bunch of trite crap you really don't want to play)...crap. I can't think of anything. Seriously, though...I'm about teaching people to play stuff that they have fun with. That's what it's about. She is a huge Marilyn Manson fan. But, what the hey. I even dig a lot of the John 5 stuff I've heard. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
