miroslav Posted July 12, 2006 Posted July 12, 2006 It's on the Encore Drama channel. I've seen it a couple of times...great stuff...and some great old footage...and of course, blues! miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
pollock Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Man! I wish I would have seen this earlier! I don't even get the channel, but i could have raided friend's basement. I'm sure it will be on again though Spoonful, spoonful, spoooooooonful...... my band: http://www.blujavu.com www.myspace.com/blujavu
PBBPaul Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I've seen this now about two dozen times. I still get goose bumps. They did a great job on this documentary. I've been fortunate to be able to hang out and play with Hubert Sumlin on many occasions so it was really cool to see the archival footage. Warthog Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Wish I could get it. We only get AFN (5 channels) over here in the ROK...
D_dup3 Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Well, I guess sooner or later there would have to be a downside to passing on cable TV... Wolf was one of the alltime greats, for sure, & his guitarists were absolutely fierce. If nothing else some of my favorite musicians would've been quite different w/out him (Capt Beefheart; Lowell George ...& even me)! For those who don't know there's a great comprehensive bio of him in print now: Moanin' At Midnight by James Segrest & Mark Hoffman/Thunder's Mouth Press & this, too: official website howlinwolf.com
Greg B. Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Great show. I saw it a couple of months ago and wish that I would have been able to catch it this time to get it recorded. Definitely one that I could watch alot more than once! PBB, that must have been an awesome experience to hang and play with Hubert Sumlin! I love to watch (and listen) to him play. Just like all of the really great ones, he makes it look so effortless. Cool stuff!!! Avoid playing the amplifier at a volume setting high enough to produce a distorted sound through the speaker-Fender Guitar Course-1966

The coolest and most inspirational thing about Hubert is to see his face light up whenever he plays. His health is pretty bad now but his expression is always the same. A quick story... I first met Hubert in 1992 when we were playing a local festival and he was part of an all-star lineup that closed out the show. He showed up all alone without even a guitar. I lent him one of mine to use for his set. He was grateful, classy, and very nice. A couple of years later I went alone to a local club to see Alvin Lee play and Hubert was sitting in the audience at a table with his wife. I walked over and he greeted me like an old friend with a big smile and warm handshake. Now, I'm nobody - just a local player and we had met only once but he invited me to sit down with him and his wife to watch the show and he even bought me a beer (there's more to that part that I don't have time to type about; maybe later). It turned out that Hubert was a special guest of Alvin Lee's and got up to perform a couple of tunes with him. I was able to go backstage and hang as well. I've met and hung with him on several occasions since and he is always the same. The man is pure class. I can't tell you how much respect I have for him. D_dup3 Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Sumlin's also a very gentle & humble fellow. I never actually played with him but when he lived in Austin Tx in the early 1980s (supported by recently deceased clubowner & blues champion Clifford Antone) I did have the chance to speak with him several times. I don't know many people who are as genuinely open & inclusive in their outlook. That's certainly something he didn't learn from Chester Burnett!
