What a sad life. I remember reading about Pink Floyd recording "Wish You Were Here", their tribute to Syd, and they noticed an overweight balding chap in the studio - no one realized it was Syd himself!

I know a room of musical tunes

Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork

Let's go into the other room and make them work

Mad? Yes... for the love of music and how it nurtures the soul.

Yet another exceptional character gone :(

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.

Oh, geez... I'm really sorry to hear that. I mean, his brain has been dead--apparently--for a long time, but oh well... You reminded me: I've wantedto buy 2 of his solo albums for the longest time and haven't. I'm sure now they're gonna be price hikes on those.

This is a downer...there will never be anybody like Syd again. If you've never listened to Piper at the Gates of Dawn, check it out.

R.I.P. Syd Barrett

We'll never forget you.

Lyrics-wasted time between solos.

It was rumored that the boys from Floyd never shared one dime with him.

If thaat is actually true, I would have a lot less respect for and probably not support any of the mebers of Floyd again

This is only on the presumption that he allegedly became mentally incompetent and that the bands succes was based on his life.

They coulda helped him out with a few Pounds I'm sure

Here's another rumor, which I much prefer:

By JILL LAWLESS

AP

LONDON [AP] - Syd Barrett, the troubled Pink Floyd co-founder who spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, the band said Tuesday. He was 60.

The surviving members the legendary band - David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Richard Wright - said they were "very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett's death."

"Syd was the guiding light of the early band lineup and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire," they said in a statement.

His former bandmates made sure Barrett continued to receive royalties from his work with Floyd.>>>

Don't believe everything you hear. Hopefully the AP story is the accurate one.

The band had a lot of work to do in overcoming his inability to continue writing & playing. He got them started, then they had to reinvent themselves as the Syd-less Floyd. Almost no other band has been able to survive the departure of its primary creative charismatic leader. Genesis comes to mind, nobody else I can think of right now.

As with anyone suffering psychological problems, Barrett certainly had unhappy times but by most knowledgable accounts he's been fairly happy for years living off his royalties (& perhaps other sources) & spending his time as a painter.

Not as wealthy as Roger Waters but apparently well satisfied with a modest lifestyle.

Who knows...he may have actually been happier than in the tumultuous times of his Pink Floyd period.

While not meaning to cast aspersions particularly on the other Floyds, I'd point out that Barrett didn't receive royalties by any of their actions or largesse but because of his legit copyrights & maintenance by his mother & lawyers.

By the time of his being ousted from the band the other members mostly (& with some justification) viewed him as a major pain.

Finally, while it's all well intended, I'll pass on quoting the popular latter-day Floyd lyric mentioned above for one of Syd's own: "That cat's something I can't explain!"

Actually Gilmore and I beleive Waters both helped him on his solo albums. And I beleive he as never actually fired he just sort of wandered away. I have The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story on DVD and it sheads a lot of light on exactely what happend. He just did too many drugs and it set off a probably preexisting mental condition. He has always been a big favorite of mine althoug his solo stuff is pretty hard to listen to for me. I guess I need to get the CD's as they are still avaliable

What I've read is that the gigs were getting seriously messed up, since he sometimes wouldn't sing or play at all, he'd stand on stage & glare into the audience. The others learned to sing his parts. They realized they were in deep s**t, so they brought in Syd's old college pal David Gilmour to play the guitar parts. They were a 5 piece for a couple months, but it just deteriorated. Syd became highly disruptive, & they eventually offered to let Barrett continue as a non-performing songwriter. I guess he didn't want to do that, & realizing he was being eased out just stopped showing up entirely, & the Floyd went on as a 4 piece without him. And this was at a time when they were having a lot of newfound chart success & getting much bigger gigs, so they needed to go with a stabile, if somewhat undistinguished [at the time] bandmember. Rumors had it that Clapton was being considered for the position.

Yes something like that. He was just too mentaly ill to contiune working in a band. It's all explained on the DVD but I have only watched it a couple of times so I don't really have all the details fresh in my mind right now. I will put on Piper at the Gates of Dawn and watch the DVD. This is like the 3rd or forth time I had to get Piper at the Gates of Dawn as it keep wandering off on it'w own. The last time it was in CD format. You have to get Relics or some other compilation to get ARnold Layne and See Emily Play as they were never orginal released on an album. I always liked early Pink Floyd better than some of the later stuff.

Schizophrenia often is first manifested in males in the early twenties, so Syd may possibly have been headed for a crash even without the LSD, which probably just sped up the descent.

I'd like to think that Syd enjoyed the latter part of his life. I'd recently just got hold of Wish You Were Here, and well, Shine on, Syd, Shine on you crazy diamond!

I always liked his solo work a lot. There was a real twee charm to his things, which someone like Waters would never be able to do. "Twee" is bloody hard to do. Syd managed it, Ray Davies managed it, not many other people have.

I'm thinking about all those songs like "Gnome", "Effervescing Elephant" and "Here We Go". They were quirky, charming songs. I think the only Floyd song that approaches Syd's style is "Wish You Were Here", with its memorable, if rather disjointed, imagery.

It's a pity Syd dropped out of it all, Floyd would have been much better with him on board.
