Mass Effect Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 Thanks for posting that. Always wanted to see him pull that one off. BTW, look how there's no wasted motion of his left hand fingers. They're always positioned just above the frets he's about to play, never rising far above the fretboard. Makes it look easy. quote:Originally posted by mdrs: It's pure B.S., and obvioulsy inaccurate. Hardtail Posted July 9, 2006 Author Posted July 9, 2006 Yes, Steve Morse rocks! I love his whole attitude about music, guitar playing, and life in general. If it weren't for Guitar Player (back in the 80's), I never would have heard of this guy. I actually got to meet him briefly in '86 when I was stationed in Japan. During his brief stint in Kansas, he was doing a U.S.O show. Nice guy.
guitarisawayoflife21 Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 My instructor tried to show me this the other day and I thought I had it down decently. I guess not. www.myspace.com/robyourselfblind check us out
guitarisawayoflife21 Posted July 9, 2006 Posted July 9, 2006 I like how he has that circular picking motion going on. Do any of you play with your pinky anchored on the guitar like he does? I've always preferred having my hand kind of free and floating there. www.myspace.com/robyourselfblind check us out
Mass Effect Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I used to anchor my pinky in my previous stint with the guitar. Looking back on it I think it was the wrong approach for me. Now I think it was holding me back. After watching guys like Eric Johnson (doesn't use the anchor technique) skip strings and play lead lines that are so flowing and smooth, I decided this time around I'd not anchor any right hand fingers. It's turning out to be a good decision but it just depends on the player I guess. Obviously it doesn't hold back guys like Morse or Petrucci. quote:Originally posted by mdrs: It's pure B.S., and obvioulsy inaccurate. I suspect it is posted for effect, not for accuracy. Hardtail Posted July 10, 2006 Author Posted July 10, 2006 I anchor my 3rd and 4th fingers lightly on the guitar when doing solo work. When doing rhythm work, I don't anchor my hand at all and basically curl the fingers into a fist. Some of the greats do it and some do not. I see no compelling reason to change unless someone gave me a good reason to. It took me awhile to dig this up from the archives but here's a great article written by Terry Syrek that someone here had provided: http://www.terrysyrek.com/doorway2.html
