This thing has got to be the most burley music stand on the planet. No kidding it's built like a tank. Made in the UK and distributed by a firm in Georgia. They use machine shop grade fasteners all allen screws and even provide the allen wrench a place to store on the bottom of the lower floor tube. The main holder is wire and the welding is fantastic (welding quality is part of my profession) so I'm very pickey and this is first class work!..

The paint is perfection and you saw how unique it is being off centered..I can literally pull it up to my easy chair and kick back the chair, hold my guitar in playing position and still easily read the notation! then it swings out of the way to the side and I can stand right up. Also it makes a great reading stand for studying anyting or reading magazines or books because it can come so close to your body. Special thanks to FantasticSound for that tip on this great product!

I don't remember what the conversation was about, but I found the company website and was rather amazed at the unique stand products they produce.

Glad the product is as exceptional, IYO Lee, as it appears on virtual paper. ;)

That's a neat looking stand. I have a sturdy but nondescript one - it's a huge help. After the essentials - the gear that makes the noise, a decent tuner and a metronome - it's probably the guitar accessory that makes my life the easiest.

Hmmm...it's intersting looking...

...but at $90...that's just a bit too pricy for my tastes...

...just so's I can play my guitar from a recliner! ;)

My music stand of choice is the Manhasset M48...which is a very good quality studio stand...with one-handed up/down operation...and it's only $30! :thu:

Rat Music Stands? You mean the litle buggars can read music?

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

You bet they can! It should have been mentioned that the stand pictures are actual size.
What a horrible night to have a curse.

Yes, this is not the stand for everyone. As I mentioned to Lee, I'm quite sure Rat Stands' bread and butter are symphony orchestras that play Great Halls.

But for your money you get a great stand that isn't in your way and can be left in the living room without looking butt ugly.

I have the Manhasset myself, but I wouldn't dare consider leaving it (and it's clean as a whistle) in our living areas. My wife would never stand for it. ;)

The M48 model also comes in several other colors besides just black...

...so maybe you should get one that is color coordinated with your living room furniture

and then your wife might let you leave it there! :P;):D

I have three Manhasset stands, two "48"s and a "49" (as it would seem from looking at their web site, I didn't know what models they were until this thread). I want one of those ones that fold out-- which I guess would be to the size of the "four score" stand-- to fit music that folds out, which is really nice when a piece is more than two pages and the publisher was good enough to make it fold out.

But what really caught my eye is the #54. It is wide enough for scores that fold out, but with the two legs it would support more weight while extended up. The whole thing looks pretty. One of the stands I have raises up so you can read off it while standing up, but you can't really load it up with like the Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns and other other big heavy books, it slides down. I don't need another music stand, but that looks pretty useful.

:confused: UnderTheGroove, I write allot using that stand. Why don't you think you can? When the grid is locked it's stable like a tank!

You are writting with some hard thing to "lean" on with the pencil you're writting with. You're not writting on just a sheet of music on the stand, right?

When I read what UndertheGroove wrote, I also pictured the fan or air conditioner blowing the music off the stand if a breeze came at it from behind. In a rehearsal room I like to set up in a circle when learning new stuff, and I'd almost always have a music stand infront of me to either read off a chart or write one out, so I'd be facing the drummer either directly or off on a slight angle. The air conditioner is often in back of the drummer, I guess because the studio owner wants a sweaty stinking drummer's funk to pervade the room and enhance the rehearsal experience-- or they just need the air conditioner more.

Just in case people are wondering about comments such as the fan / a/c issue or why they use a grid in the first place.

They sell products to make this stand "solid", but I rather think I'd get a piece of medium to heavy plexi either as a solid back, when necessary, or as a solid front one can read through. I've done this with broken plexi displays from stores I've worked in. Works like a charm in windy situations. Which brings up another point. A solid Manhasset stand is just as useless in the wind, by itself. Even if it's shielding the sheet music, it tends to create low pressure around the stand and.. whooooosh! There goes your music. ;)

As for the reason for the wire stand, it has to do with allowing any are not covered by music to allow sound to pass through. Much better for recording sessions with lots of music stands and few mics.

Depending on where the wind is coming from you could turn the stand, or clip stuff down.

It is true stuff can blow off a more traditional stand, but short of the measures you describe, you can't really turn it to avoid the fan or AC blowing the pages if you're facing it.

I'm not trying to knock the stand, but when the writing on a sheet was mentioned it for some reason conjured up memories of pages flipping around on me in rehearsal rooms-- on manhasettes.

I just use the metal paper clips...not the small "paper clips"...but those U-shaped black metal ones that have have the long wire pieces that flip back to let you bend them open.

Those clips have a very firm grip...and the paper ain't going anywhere.

I can clip them all around the edges of my Manhasset stands, as needed...

...and I don't need to place any plexiglass or other hard surface...

...as the Manhasset already comes with it! ;)

But I have to ask...when the heck to any of you Rock & Rollers use a music stand outside where there's wind ...???

Heck...I use them in the studio and for practice, but that's inside....though I guess you could be practicing outside.

Otherwise...how many of you really perform in front of an audience WITH a stand...?

Other than a symphony orchestra...I find the use of music stands while performing a bit of a turn-off.

I always brought a notebook to rehearsal rooms, hell I brought breif cases for a while.

A couple of places I went had big fans oscilating and blowing everything, and often there have been AC's right behind the drummer. If I remember correctly Ultrasound has a couple of rooms like that.

It wasn't a major problem, but a couple of times I had air flip a page or ruffle it.

And I'll be on the next page while you're playing with clips. :P My favorite piece of plexi came from a sign holder that broke at MARS Music. I cut down the cracked side until it was just one letter size piece of plastic with the crease wear the plexi folded over. It hung on the top of my Manhasset. Very effective for thin sheets and reversable for thicker notebooks, songbooks, etc.

I worked with a lot of bands doing corporate events and parties. Not uncommon for them to pull out stands for music they haven't played together, etc. Both they and my guest groups at Opryland were often outside. (Almost always in the case of the guest groups.) In addition, I've used my Manhasset in a pinch, for a podium on informal, outdoor events in which management failed to procure one. In both cases, having something clear that held paper in place made me the hero. ;)

But as others have mentioned, fans can often be the source of unwanted airflow indoors.
