King Kamehameha Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I originally posted this on the bass forum, but I think you guys would know, too. I had my bass signed by Gary Hoey in industrial strength Sharpie a while back. Despite the fact that it's supposed to survive intense heat and chemical washes, the Sharpie signature is slowly coming off. Can you guys think of anything I can do to protect it? Maybe something clear I can paint over it. I want to do this as soon as humanly possible so it doesn't get any more damaged. Please tell me, any help would be appreciated. caprae Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 If this is the post you're refering to, its only been a couple of hours and this is not your ordinary thread. There are a couple of builders around here who know more about finished used on guitars/basses. I don't know how clear coat sprays would interact with sharpie on a bass, but that would be my first guess. You might want to call the tech department of the maker of your bass. King Kamehameha Posted July 5, 2006 Author Posted July 5, 2006 Thanks. I have some idea of what to do now. I hope you understand my posting it on this forum too, I just went into panic mode. For no reason. Never mind, I'm a psycho. But thank you. miroslav Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 Put it in a glass case... ...it'll last a real long time! Otherwise...it's gonna' come off... ...and if you try spraying anything over it...you might destroy it anyway. They call them "permanent" markers...but that's only about 60% true. Your biggest problem is the actual finish on the guitar...which is not very porous...so the ink from the Sharpie just sits on the surface. miroslav - miroslavmusic.com "Just because it happened to you, it doesn't mean it's important."
musicalhair Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 What is that spray they use over like pastel art work or when you apply oil colors to black and white photos-- fixer they call it. I wonder if fixer help. You could put a clear sticker over it, I mean people put stickers or 'decals' on their instrument anyway. Short of that, maybe stash it in it's case forevermore and get an new bass. check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion.
King Kamehameha Posted July 5, 2006 Author Posted July 5, 2006 Hah. Don't have the cash for a new bass. I'll basically try anything, I love this bass. Well, within the limit of sanity. Y'know.
