revolead Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I haven't been around in awhile, but I think a lot of you remember me. I see A String is now a moderator and that I still recognize some names. That's a good sign, I suppose. Anyway, I've been busy with college (still have another year to go) and other stuff. Right now, I'm in Pittsburgh doing an internship at the Tribune-Review, so if anyone around here lives in the area and wants to get together for a beer or something let me know. Hope all is well with you guys. Shut up and play.

revolead Posted July 1, 2006 Author Posted July 1, 2006 Pretty good. I've had a few bumps here and there with money and trying to finish everything at once, but all around, I can't say I'm doing poorly or anything. I graduate in less than a year, so I'm excited about that. Hopefully I get a job somewhere. Shut up and play.
doc taz Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Yeah, I'm all right. Haven't been around here too much lately, though. You can blame the links on my sig for that... a small (but somewhat significant) part of it, anyhow. sevenstring.org profile my flickr page

Do you have your eyes on any employers in particular? Well, I don't know yet. It depends at this point. If I go into column writing (which is what I would prefer to do most) I'll probably be working for a Freedom Communications newspaper (Colorado Springs Gazette, Gastonia Gazette, Orange County Register) since they most align with my political philosophy. If I go into a think tank, I'll probably end up in Washington, although I don't really like that option. I may end up in law enforcement if all else fails, or I may even go to grad school and work toward a PhD in mass communications with an emphasis in political communication. Shut up and play.
musicalhair Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Bill Park is in Pittsburg, but he isn't around this forum due to ... something. I liked Pittsburg when I played the ABC Cafe there a couple of years ago. It might not be your bag though, it seemed like a hippie place. How long are you there for? check out some comedy I've done: http://louhasspoken.tumblr.com/ My Unitarian Jihad Name: Brother Broadsword of Enlightened Compassion.
revolead Posted July 1, 2006 Author Posted July 1, 2006 Til Aug. 12 or so. I've heard of the ABC Cafe, and I can deal with hippie places, just so long as we avoid discussing politics and/or drug usage. Makes me wonder why I'd hang out with musicians then. Shut up and play.

revolead Posted July 2, 2006 Author Posted July 2, 2006 Hey everyone who just stopped in. I've been trying to get some play time in, but it was hard at times. Mostly I spent the last several months working on intonnation, tone, and technique rather than speed or learning any new songs. I think that's paying off though, because I have noticed an overall improvement in my string bending, BB King plucking (if that's what it's called), and in my tone as well. FYI - If you want to improve your tone - I know this sounds cheesey - put in some opera or other vocal music and work to achieve that sort of clarity. Sometimes it's fun to play along with Sarah Brightman or Lucianno Pavrotti, even if you feel like a cultural elist or a loser at first. You'd be surprised by trying to get your guitar to sustain like those voices how much your finger have to work. Any hack can play a decent lead tone on a fast-paced tune, but it takes effort to get the sort of sliding violin/perfect tone resembling that of Eric Johnson or Phil Keaggy. Shut up and play.
Dr. Ellwood Posted July 2, 2006 Posted July 2, 2006 Hi Revo! I don't think we have ever talked before but welcome back and glad to meet you. I have heard your name mentioned in the past though. Anyway good luck in school and doing the grad school thing is a good thing to do while you have the momentum from undergrad studies, if you can swing it financially. http://www.thestringnetwork.com
revolead Posted July 2, 2006 Author Posted July 2, 2006 Hey ellwood. Yeah, that's what my mom said. She went to grad school for free because she taught classes, so who knows. I like that Tele in your avatar. How does it play? Shut up and play.
fantasticsound Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 Welcome back, Revo. Looks like you have a lot of good options. Unless you have a drive to be in a specific place, right now, I'd say give grad school your all. (Wish I had now... ) So.. you're in Pittsburgh.. How's Big Ben? It's easiest to find me on Facebook. (or even just visit to check some places out), gimme a call or something & we can get together & catch a band or something.
