A McLeod III Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 Have you noticed that tales of the Devil, deals made with Satan at the Crossroads, unexplained phenomena, unexplained deaths and general misfortune in the music world seem to be mostly often associated with Guitar Players? Not to say bad things don't happen to musicians of other disciplines but most of the most famous tales of musical misfortune and mayhem seem to fall upon guitar players. (Usually winds up as a song too.) Maybe I should change my instrument......Not!!!! Thoughts? D_dup3 Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 I'd blame Korn...or maybe Slipknot This may be something that applies to musicians, especially those who lead a certain extravagenat lifestyle, more than to the guitar. Italian violin vituoso Pagannini, for example, preceded Robert Johnson insofar as being rumoured to've gained his skills from the devil. So, too, the American folksong/tale of devilishly talented fiddlers ("The Devil Went Down To Georgia" didn't start with Charley Daniels). Mozart's death remains an surprising, "unexplained death" & has been since it's occurrence & it would be hard to imagine a worse case of "general misfortune" than to be a groundbreakingly inventive composer like Beethoven & to go deaf.
FormerOceanwaySlave Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 You know, I think you're on to something. Everytime I pick up a guitar, I start thinking about having sex with puppies. And then, I think about taking the puppies and converting them to Satanism. And then I start thinking about taking all of the people with more than one Y chromosome and sending them to a Bible-thumping church. You don't suppose it might be just God's way of thinning out the pack? Cheers, Alan Tomlinson
Guitarzan Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 in my opinion there is nothing more satanic than accordian...did you ever try to play one? you would greatly benefit from a soul selling deal. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will

alittlebatty Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Perhaps because guitar seems to be the most played instrument? I mean look at how safe oboe players are.......nobody ever told a story about how an oboe player went to the crossroads to meet with a mysterious stranger, the result being the instrumentalist becoming a virtuoso with groupies chasing him everywhere........

You've obviously never heard the story of Myron Klotznik...5th chair oboist of the Jackson, MS, Symphony. His dream was to play Carnegie Hall...but, he sucked. He heard the legend of Robert Johnson, and found that fabled crossroads. He became the "Demon Oboist" of Carnegie Hall. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
Kramer Ferrington III. Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Well, I have an ancestor that was a trapper in the North of Argentina sometime in the late 19th century. Anyway, he was lost out in the scrub and he started hearing guitar music. You have to understand that the North of Argentina was full of Spanish witches and warlocks and so on that escaped the persecutions launched by queen Isabella the Catholic (she walled in a whole lot of them in their cermonial caves). Those that missed out on being walled in escaped to the new world. Anyway, my ancestor knew he was hearing a thing called "La Salamanca" where the devil would play guitar for his followers. The music was so enchanting that it would draw everyone around to the dance, and anyone that came to the dance would be doomed. He couldn't help following the music until he came to a clearing and saw Satan and all his demons playing guitar and dancing in the firelight. And just as my ancestor was about to join the dance and be doomed, he pulled out his hunting knife so that the blade and the hilt made a rough cross in the moonlight. The music stopped and he found himself alone beside the fire. The next morning he found his way out of the scrub and back to town. I don't know if it's true (I kinda doubt it) but it's a hell of a family story. Band MySpace My snazzy t-shirt empire

Eric Iverson Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Well, speaking as a Christian musician, I find all the nonsense about some particular instrument being a "tool of the devil" ridiculous also! An instrument is only a tool. I can take a hammer and build a house, or I can use it to whack somebody over the head and kill them! Are hammers evil? Are screwdrivers evil? You can use it to fix your equipment, or to SCREW somebody! You decide.. in any event, I am not responsible... I am sending a letter to my lawyer to that effect! Are levels evil? Who knows what evil purposes those BUBBLES could be put to!

Eric Iverson Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Maxwell got there first, with his silver hammer... it was the "pataphysical science" that he studied that drove him over the edge.. not the guitar! Or so I perceive... please contact Sir Paul if you want the inside story! PS Does Paul play the silver hammer also? He seems to play everything ELSE!

Xplorer Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Evil is why I play guitar. My idols have always been the 'all dressed in black' creepy pointy guitar plaing MF's. If it wasn't for bands like Slayer and Sepultura, I wouldn't be a guitar player. Am I evil? No. Are they evil? No. So then why evil? Why would I want to appear to be evil when the guitar is involved? I don't know for sure. I just can't picture myself jamming out 'Brown Eyed Girl'. I like my music evil, but I'm far from an evil person. Satan and metal go hand in hand. I like that it freaks people out. It's funny for me to think people actually belive that Satan has anything to do with it though. Like I would actually belive there is a devil, and he influences my musical preferances! Evil and Satan are just fun camp imagery, like watching Friday the 13th in PJ's eating popcorn. ooohhhh.... so evil! What a horrible night to have a curse.
alittlebatty Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 Tedster-you are an amazing story teller! I have to say I enjoy yanking peoples chains when it comes to the "guitar being evil" bs,tho I do it in harmless ways. Dressing gothy as I often do helps in freaking uptight people out. And it doesn't take much-wearing a bat necklace or a skull bead bracelet often does the trick just fine-as long as one wears black & red. Personally I don't believe the devil even exists...mind you that's my personal opinion, and in no way do I mean that as a challenge or an insult to anyone who's beliefs are different. Vince-that is an amazing family history tale....perfect for halloween night or when gathered around a campfire. You're lucky!

Xplorer Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 So is the guitar itself evil? Is it the player, or a guitar vibe? Is this evil? Would be you afraid of this man? http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/78884nSur_w.jpg What a horrible night to have a curse.
