Tone Taster Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Anyone own one? I'm particularly interested in the MK50 II
alittlebatty Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 my eyes were quickly scanning the post topics & at first I thought you said "cornfield amps".................I've never heard of them!
Guitar Geezer Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 IIRC they are rarer than rare, in the boutique amp world. http://www.tonemerchants.com/Cornford_Amps.htm You're looking at $3200.00 for the Mk 2 Lynn G
skipclone 1 Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 The combo amps are available at Guitar Asylum in Long Island, N.Y. and I believe the place is called Guitar Works in Boston, you may also find the MK50 there. I even have an address of a place in the U.K. that handles them and I will have one...oh yes...I will have one. Both combos can be had for under $2,000-not sure about the MK. The list of users is pretty impressive. Myles, one of the moderators here, knows them well-his comments on them are probably in the archives. Tone Taster Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 We don't need no stinkin' combos Just the ampflifier head w/a killer cab, I wanna rock !
mdrs Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 yZ, I have a Cornford Harlequin, and bought a Cornford Hurricane and a Cornford 2x12 speaker cab loaded with Celestion Vin 30's. Believe it or not, I bought the Hurricane and the cab from none other than Joe Satriani. They are both bad to the bone. The Harlequin is mostly for home/studio use. The Hurricane is very similiar, but a bit more robust. They both have a very Marshall-ish growl, but sound darker...more lows. The cabs are solid pine, and I think that really deepens their tone capabilities. I have not played the MK 50 head. But my brother has, and absolutely LOVED it. If he had the $$$, he said he'd sell his Mesa Mk IV, and get the Cornford MK II. Apparently Satch uses/used my Hurricane and 2x12, along with two Mk 50 heads (one modded to be 100 watts) in the studio, for recording. They are awesome, but not cheap. Can you say "second mortgage"???? Don Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. mdrs Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 http://www.cornfordamps.com/launch.html I bought my Harlequin new from these guys; http://www.guitarx.com/ Decent price (not cheap, mind you), and free shipping...Well packed, and got it fast. Tedster Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I've played a Gretch Duo Jet through a Cornford, at a little shop on Denmark St. in London. It sounded great. And, it was a combo. You can lug around a head and cab if you want...have at it. "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

souvenir Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 The Cornford amps sound incredible. Guitar Techniques magazine and Guitarist mostly use them to record their demo tracks. Richie Kotzen has one and you can hear it on his Get Up album. If you can afford one, then I'd highly recommend them. I don't have one, but I've played one in a guitar shop in Glasgow called McCormick's. It was the 6watt combo and it sounded really amazing.
mdrs Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Well, Cornford Amps do rock....of course you'll have to do your part too........ Don Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. mdrs Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Hey Souvenir....I'm pretty sure you played thru a Harlequin. It is amazing, isn't it? Sounds like a _alls to the wall Marshall cranked, with more lows, and at ear sparing dB levels. Don Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. Anyway, it's a great amp, I played a Fender Strat through it and it was the best tone I've heard from my own hands! Just guitar into amp, no pedals. It cleans up amazingly well when you roll the volume off.
mdrs Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Yea souv, it has that "volume" to control the "growl", and a "master" to keep the dB's down. Mine stays in my family room.....I feel better if it's close to me........ Hey yZ...if you have the coins, and are looking for an amazingly rock'in amp, check out Fuchs Over Drive Supreme heads. I have an ODS 50 watt that I love. It does Santana tone, but also goes into the Marshall distortion rhelm. I have played dozens of different guitars thru it, and unlike many amps, it seems to make them all sound great. Check one out, if you can. http://www.fuchsaudiotechnology.com/html/overdrive_supreme.html Don Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. If I'm gonna pay, I want PTP. They gotsta work for da monay !
mdrs Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 I hear you. And, many people echo your sentiments. Andy Fuchs is a maniac...in a good sense. He doesn't use PCB's to cut corners. He has a very small operation, and oversees everything personally. He truely believes using a PCB makes his amps sound and function better. I don't think he'd use them otherwise. I'd tend to believe him. I would put his "ODS" amps up against any I've owned or played. PTP is great....there's no doubt about it. But, there are many ways to get to tone nirvana. The Fuchs ODS is one. Don If you have a chance, put a Fuchs thru it's paces. Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. Gifthorse Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 I have never had reliability issues with any amp I have owned so I never worry about that stuff. I hope it stays like that!! The THD flexi is my next purchase when I get some $ http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
mdrs Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 by the way, yZe....if you are interested, I can put you in touch with the guy who I bought my Hurricane and the 2x12 Cornford cab from. He had two Mk 50 Cornford heads...one standard 50 watt, and the other modded to 100 watts. He is apparently selling both for Joe Satriani. The Hurricane and the 2x12 cab were is excellent condition, and I actually got a really cool travel case with wheels for the hurricane. The price was NOT a bargan, esp. for used equipment. But if you want a awesome amp owned by Satch, let me know. He still had them, as of a month ago. I don't know the guy personally....but he seemed a totally honest dealer. mdrs Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 Thanks, yZe. Now I HAVE TO GO TO MY LOCAL MUSIC SHOP.....THD Flexi.... oh boy..... Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. skipclone 1 Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 BTW, one small annoying thing about the Cornfords, correct me if I`m wrong but no standby switch? Same old surprises, brand new cliches- Skipsounds on Soundclick: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandid=602491
mdrs Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 you are correct, sir!! Cornfords lack a standby, which is a drawback! I either use my pedal tuner to cut out my guitar signal, or use one of those planet waves guitar cords with the push button switch that disconnects my guitar signal. I always why that left the standby switch off?? Don Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy. Playing so free, like a breath rippling by." http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=574296 http://www.myspace.com/imdrs

Tone Taster Posted June 24, 2006 Author Posted June 24, 2006 Originally posted by mdrs: Thanks, yZe. Now I HAVE TO GO TO MY LOCAL MUSIC SHOP.....THD Flexi.... oh boy..... THe thing is, is that it is way too loud w/o the attenuator another problem is the cascading gain/volume deal it was hard to tweak the volumes between clean and dirty, but it seems like it could be done in concert w/the hot plate Now about that "missing standby " i will email Paul and ask waz up wit dat
mdrs Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 could a standby possibly have any impact on tone??? With an amp of this quality, you'd think that there must be some logical reason for the missing standby. Don Don "There once was a note, Pure and Easy.
