Eric Iverson Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I read an interesting article in the NY Times called "the Summer of Love Redux". (6/18/06) It dealt with the "freak folk" movement of musicians and the "neo-hippie revival." One of the musicians was speculating about what nature worship and psilocybin mushrooms would do for our "collective consciousness." Apparently he was serious, believe it or not! I can't comment on the music, since I haven't heard any of those bands. I am from that era, and still enjoy some of the music, but it seems so silly to hear talk like that these days! On that note, what do YOU guys think we guitarists need for our "collective consciousness"?? Of course, we could go to Washington D. C. and do a chant to levitate the Pentagon..... or maybe bring our guitars and do it with the music!..
Dr. Ellwood Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 IF we could levitate the Pentagon, why would we want too? http://www.thestringnetwork.com
Eric Iverson Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 I was referring to that time when Allen Ginsburg and company went there chanting "out demons out" and attempted to levitate the place. They didn't succeed, but they did get a rise out of some of the people who heard about it! Those were some crazy times....
skipclone 1 Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Perhaps he was referring to the `collective unconscious`, which is well documented-I`ve spent many a saturday night with a bunch of friends in that condition... Seriously, I don`t find it far-fetched. As a people we`ve been divided, rather than brought together, by forces like narrowcasting, targeted marketing etc. It`s packaged individuality, you never have to be exposed to anyone`s preferences other than your own. I don`t think that`s healthy at all, what kind of world is that? a good dose of collective consciousness is a good cure. Gifthorse Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 I think he meant that we are all connected, and that reality is subjective. http://flagshipmile.dmusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/gifthorse
Justus A. Picker Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 what do YOU guys think we guitarists need for our "collective consciousness"On-line, real-time jam sessions. We could change the world......... http://www.smokedsalmonband.com/exile/exile1.jpg

Eric Iverson Posted June 23, 2006 Author Posted June 23, 2006 OK, I'm only making fun of the phrase "collective consciousness". I do think that we can always grow and learn and enjoy music and other things together, without the hippie nonsense! Whenever I hear a good musician I listen and learn and enjoy whatever I can.. and often try and figure out how to apply it to what I do! If people are victims of "narrowcasting" or whatever, given the INCREDIBLE amount of instantly available information on the Net, quite often for free...plus the thousands of other pieces of instructional material out there for a reasonable price... they have only themselves to blame!

One of my favorite books on that whole collective consciousness thing was "The Electric Coolaid Acid Test" by Tom Wolf. Quite an interesting exploration of the whole holucinogenic drugs and grok at the world scene. I wonder whatever happened to my copy of that book? bbach Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.

To see what's underneath, of course! (Jimmy Hoffa perhaps?) Nah, he's under the Federal Trade Commission building, and he's never been found because no one knows where the FTC building is... Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

There`s an incredible amount of instantly available total junk too, and the length of a day has done a bad job of keeping pace with the amount of information. If I have to choose, interaction beats information, hands down. Same old surprises, brand new cliches- Skipsounds on Soundclick: www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandid=602491
