Xplorer Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Just wanted to share some of my hobby work with you guys. This is a el cheapo Les Paul double cutaway copy I'm repairing for a friend. The neck was snapped off clean and the lower frets and fretboard are a mess from some brutal clamping work done by some dude who tried to reset the neck. I think I did a pretty good job at getting the neck back on straight. The repair line is barely noticable. http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/Repairs%20-%20Finishing/redux012.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/Repairs%20-%20Finishing/redux013.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/Repairs%20-%20Finishing/000_0269.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/Repairs%20-%20Finishing/000_0270.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/Repairs%20-%20Finishing/000_0268.jpg I'll repost once I start to finish the guitar. I'm a new dad, so it's going to be a long drawn out project! I'm an amature, so any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated. What a horrible night to have a curse.
Pappy P Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 That's good. How did you attach the neck. Is it just glued in, no bolts, no dove tail? I guess that's why the neck came off in the first place. What kind of electronics are you going to install? www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click
Pappy P Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Oh wait. Was that a plywood heel? Did the glue joint seperate there? If that wasn't a clean break, you did an awesome repair job? www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click

The heel was not plywood, it was the same material as the rest of the neck (used to be one piece). The neck and heel was very similar to this Saga guitar kit neck: http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/prkit0004.jpg The break was semi-clean. Some of the wood splintered and left gouges. After cleaning up the break, I rigged up a jig to hold the neck straight and glued and clamped the neck back onto what was left of the heel joint. I used a 2-part urathane epoxy made by LORD Adhesives. What a horrible night to have a curse.
Pappy P Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Sorry, I meant laminated not plywood. That saga kit looks geourgeous. www.birdblues.com My Stuff On Sound Click
Xplorer Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 It has a super thin laminated top. I will be finishing the guitar in black with possibly a gold top. The Saga kits are complete garbage. Most of them are shipped with necks that are bowed beyond repair. I'd still like to get one for the challenge of turining it into a decent guitar! What a horrible night to have a curse.
Xplorer Posted July 1, 2006 Author Posted July 1, 2006 I finished the colour coats today. Getting ready to apply the clear soon. I think this guitar is going to look bad ass. Anyone have any ideas to make this thing look more vintage? I'm going for a Les Paul DC Special. This is a LP DC Special copy, isn't it? What a horrible night to have a curse.
jimash Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 When my old SG broke a nice luthier screwed a pecie of aluminum in under the pickup into the dovetail. If you can find enough wood on your neck heel/end, a metal reinforcement might keep it together. Rock on. Jim
mdrs Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Xplorer...that looks great!! Keep us posted with photos....I'd love to see the final result. Are you spraying on the finish yourself? I just finished making my first two electrics...a Tele and a Strat. I had a buddy, who has worked for many years in the Martin Guitar factory, spray the nitrocellulose lacquer for me. I really learned a lot doing these projects, and the guitars are beauties!! I'm now working with another friend to really tweak the final set up. I'm learning a lot about matching strings to fretboard radius, action height, and nut and bridge adjustment. This is really cool stuff. I attempted to make my own bone nut from a blank, but the prototype didn't turn out too well!! Practice makes perfect, or so they say!! I'm thinking of trying a set neck L.P. project next. As for making it look vintage....hummmmmm. You can get some old accessories on eBay...like old pickups, tuning machines, pick guards, etc.. I've been thinking that, for instance, one could get a LP Jr really cheap. And then buy an old dog ear P-90 on eBay, and sort of kind of have a cool "almost vintage" axe. Xplorer Posted July 7, 2006 Author Posted July 7, 2006 Sorry about the crappy pics, but here is the guitar with some more work done on it... http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/DSC01461.jpghttp://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g30/scmcfaul/DSC01464.jpg What a horrible night to have a curse.
Xplorer Posted July 7, 2006 Author Posted July 7, 2006 Can anyone offer some advice as to how I can fabricate a pick guard for not alot of $$$? What a horrible night to have a curse.
