I'm tryingto expand my laptop, as much as i can at least. I'd like to put a gig of RAM in and upgrade my hard drive to a 120 gig but I'm not sure what would be compatable with my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 1000, if anyone knows anything I'd really apreciate it thanks yo!

P.S. I know i should probably ask a computer forum but I'm more comfortable with you guys haha thanks again.

If you check the DELL site.. you should be able to get the specs on your laptop.. thats the first place to start.. that will let you know what it can go up to .. some max out @512 ram.. some 256.. some 1 or 2 gig.. so that would bethe first palce to start.. as for hard drives.. it will tell you the same. what's in it now? (hard drive and ram wise)?

According to the Kingston memory website (http://www.kingston.com) your Inspiron 1000 will only take 512MB of RAM. You can put two memory modules in it. Two x 256MB or one 512MB. If you put two 512MB modules in it, it will only see one of them.

Here's the link the Kingston web page about your laptop.

I'd check with NewEgg.com for their price on those memory modules.

That laptop also uses a standard laptop hard drive. But it is a standard EIDE port so it probably won't see hard drives larger than 137GB. A 120 GB drive should work fine.

Cloning hard drives on a laptop is not usually very easy. You really need a PC that can address both drives or a very fast network to make a backup image of your drive onto (Norton Ghost works well for that). Barring that, you could also try using an external USB (2.0 only) drive for the image backup.

At the moment I have a 30 gig hard drive and 224 mb of RAM I'm kinda sad that I can only upgrade to 512 of RAM but hey what can I do? I think I'll just wait til I can save enough money for a MacBook Pro. Thanks you guys.

You may want to try it anyways. Doubling your memory can only help and I've seen 512k SODIMM (laptop memory) for $20 or $30 if you watch from week-to-week (Best Buy).

A hard drive will set you back a little more money but will probably be 1-1/2 times faster than the one you have; plus, you'll get all that space.

I would just install the above 2 items and a FRESH copy of your OS. Get an external caddy for your 30 gig drive and pull files off it as needed (as said above, a USB hookup). I think you'll notice quite an improvement. :)

You could always get an external hard drive to increase your file storage. If you do some checking, you could get one that you could use with the machine you have now and then use it with the Mac whenever you get that. (You may have to reformat the drive when you switch to the Mac though).
