ragnarok Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Hi my uncle give.s me a new 7 string guitar ... anyone knows how can I learn to play it? are the chords equal like the ones in 6 strings guitars? where can i found something useful(web,book...)?
The Geoff Posted June 16, 2006 Posted June 16, 2006 Ignore the 7th string for the time being or take it off temporarily) and learn it as a 6 string - there's loads of books & courses around - maybe someone here who knows about it might recommend something. As you become familiar with the guitar, you'll learn how to integrate the 7th string. I've never played one, and I've been playing over 40 years - so you're a lucky lad (I presume). And welcome to the forum. Stick around, you'll pick up vast amouts of useful info here. Bbach1 Posted June 18, 2006 Posted June 18, 2006 Hi Rag. Welcome to the forum. In standard tuning you will find the seven string to be just like the six string guitars but with an added base string tuned to a low B. Unfortunately, there are only so many fingers, so when chording in the open position, you will have to work out which notes to use. You might swing your thumb over the neck to fret the seventh string. bbach Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.

alittlebatty Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 Hey! Welcome to a brave new world!!!!!!! With all due respect to Geoff-do NOT take the 7th string off or ignore it.......it's an important part of the instrument! (After all, without it.......it wouldn't be a 7 string, would it?)Besides,I would be concerned for the condition of your guitar neck without the 7th string on there...it's made to have it on there. Aside from that, take all the advice you can get from these wonderful players-even if they are missing a string they have a universe of know how that will help you on your journey. Congrats on the aquisition!
alittlebatty Posted June 25, 2006 Posted June 25, 2006 Lets see.....you asked about books! Here's what I have......."7 string Guitar:an intro to heavy Rock styles" by Tobias Hurwitz & Glenn Riley,"7 string guitars,an all purpose reference for navigating your fretboard" by Andy Martin, and "Introducing 7 string Guitar" by Dan Bagelman. Search for them on Ebay as well as comparison shopping on both B&N booksellers as well as Amazon.com. Another all important hint which will sound kinda paradoxical after that list I just gave you is don't "turn off" of other guitar method books just because they were written with the 6 string in mind. Musical knowledge is musical knowledge, and it's important. You'll find integrating the 7th string is easy because the notes there are the same as the ones on your 2nd string,so you already have a reference point. (You play already,or do you?) Web wise you could visit here as I have informative links as well as links to other players. Oh man I need to update that page too....
ragnarok Posted June 30, 2006 Author Posted June 30, 2006 thanks, sometimes people dont take much care for 7 string guitars... please let me know when you update your site for the links... i plat a rg 7321
alittlebatty Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Rag,I know that-on other message boards I got so harassed for playing one I left~but rest assured everybody on this forum has been wonderful! Hey the links are there,I just need to update other stuff,so sail onto the website.
Guitarzan Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 hey there is nothing wrong with a 7 string. sometimes a nice low runble is what you need to conjure up an evil riff. or you could play (cough) jazz (cough) with it. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=193274 rock it, i will
superdave Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Seven strings!!!!!!!!!! Damn I've got my hands full with six right now!!!
thanny XIII Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 I bought a seven. It nicely compliments my five string bass. Black metal never sounded sweeter..um..i mean eviler I knew a girl that was into biamping,I sure do miss her.-ButcherNburn
revolead Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 I always figured you just played the seven string like a six, ignoring the low B unless you wanted to use it, meaning for extra bass or something. Am I wrong? Shut up and play.
alittlebatty Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 you are absolutely right on,there's a little more to it than that, but there's the main idea, yes!
