Yeah, my laptop IS running a little hot.

BTW, my battery suddenly lost its charge too. My charging indicator doesn't even read it's charging. It's done this before though, and eventually began charging.

Perhaps my battery is going???

Hey Guys,

My Wife said that our router for our wireless crapped out for the second time. It's a Linksys.

Do you have any other recommendations?

I was going to say my little craftsman router works just fine for me, and that keeping the bits sharp is important-- but then I realized the router question was related to the speed of the board and not like a different topic.

There must be something similar for the Mac.

I've found that many issues concerning speed disappear after either running SpyBot or simply deleting the cookie-cache.

Linksys are usually known for being the best followed (as a close second) by D-Link.

One thing I should bring up, if you are running a wireless and it's suddenly slow, and you keep having problems with a router, you could have some Wi-Fi guys sharing your connection. A lot of Laptops come with Wi-Fi now and all you need to do is turn it on and it taps into the nearest, wireless connection and "Shares" it.

What problems are you having with your router? Is it not responding? Are you running a fire wall?

Lynksys is famous for crapping out. Try Netgear.

Also, I have high speed cable and this site is slow all the time. It's never been different here no matter my modems or routers. I do encrypt my wireless and that does slow things up a bit, but this is a slower site than most I visit. All the others blaze right on but posting on this site is slow.

Quite fankly all wireless routers crap out. Most of the support calls we get for them you just need to unplug for 30secs plug back in and voila... So simple but people dont even think to do it.

I chucked my wireless router as i got fed up with it crashing.. Wires are where its at!

Well, our wireless is supposed to be "secure". We have to enter our code to access it.

Sometimes if I turn the router off, then back on, it works. Other times it doesn't.

When I click on the icon in my bottom bar, it reads "connected". But when I try to access the internet, I get the usual windows error page.

Now, if the router is not working, would my status still read, "connected"???

I'll be on the road for a couple days, so I'll drag for this thread once I return and answer anymore questions.

Thanx guys!

Try this

-Click on the start button and click on run.

-Type command in the box and click ok.

-Type ping 192.168.0.1 or whatever your routers IP address is and click on the enter button.

This will tell you if your computer is still able to communicate with the router.

-Now type ping 64.233.167.99

-Also try ping www.google.com (To check the name server)

Let me know how it works out.

It is simple to reset the ip address, but a pain to have to. I have to dissagree on the wireless router thing. Not all of them crap out. I really think you get what you pay for. Linksys is pretty affordable and in my experience (not that I'm some kind of expert on these expert forums) they tend to crap out too often. My netgear wireless goes on without a glitch most of the time. I had to reset it only once since I bought it in January. I know there are better routers than netgear, but I did not want to spend more. I tossed my linksys into the trash can, but my son pulled it out and is using it. Works fine if you like unplugging it often.

I'm puzzled by your ratings. I do think Linksys is one of best known tho. They tend to lose the ip address often which is annoying. D-link seems very reliable. Netgear is another. Even Belkin, which I think is pretty cheap stuff seems to crap out less. But then, I see a lot of people using Linksys, so can't be all bad can it?

I see where your coming from its the same coversation I have with customers about AOL... "Aol is evil its full of bugs, it takes over too much on your system and their support is one of the worst ive experienced" "well ive never had a problem" "that doesnt mean alot of other people dont" "but ive never had a problem its the best thing ever made" "i respectfully disagree" and so on and so on. In my experience (from installing, maintaining and repairing 100s of wifi networks) you are very lucky to not have problems with your Router... id say if its working well, id definately keep hold of that one until its completely outdated.... :)

The main problems I have had with various routers are..

Linksys: Poor support, the VPN routers dont actually fully support VPN, Poor signal, dropping the internet connection, the wireless crashing.

Netgear: Poor support, signal drop outs at short distances.

D-Link: All of the above.

Generic (Conexant based): These vary not from brand to brand but from unit to unit. They either work or they dont and the ones that do generally need rebooting every few days. Examples of generic routers are Safecom, Edimax, Systemax.

3com: Dont even go there.... They are probably the most unstable wireless routers ive worked with. (which is surprising from such a major company)

But if you want wireless id recommend getting whatever your ISP supports otherwise they either wont or are unable to give you tech support (as the people on the phone in India dont have fault diagrams for routers that they dotn specfically support, and they lack the technical knowledge to work blind)

I wonder, Lee, what your setup is. I have found that the router needs to be matched very well with the cable modem, if indeed that is what you have. Also, where the receiving computer is located makes a huge difference. I'm getting tremendous distance from a 108mbps setup.

As far as tech support, why would anyone call any kind of computer tech support? You do realize that tech support personnel most likely know less than you right? We have a national support center here that contracts with a lot of hardware and software companies and I can tell you, the kids they hire, wow. Well, not everyone can flip burgers. You will get a lot quicker and better support on one of the many computer/software forums on the internet. I also tend to buy locally even though internet shopping is cheaper because I can get returns or exchanges easier that way, sometimes even advice.

I notice when I run a scan that a number of my neighbors have wireless as well and a lot of them are not encrypted. It would be quite easy to steal bandwidth. But the odd thing is how strong the signal is. Houses in this neighborhood have decent size yards and I'm getting three to four strong signals from other houses around here. (That's kind of OT but I find it interesting)

I read that same article a while back. A couple friends of mine are using D-Link with great success. I like Netgears interphase. It's easy to set up and tweak.

As I've been blasting Linksys, I should add that a son of mine and his girlfriend are using Linksys with few troubles. Like I said, can't be all bad.

I used to recommend linksys to my customers because I read on the internet that they were the top rated routers. This was a few years back and I hadn't heard any bad reviews.

That being said, I have now heard some bad reviews from you guys. I will not recommend them anymore.

It's all subjective. I've heard terrible things about Netgears and I've also heard they are the best. I find that you have to talk to a lot of people and see what experience has shown to be the best. Just look at the disaster with ATI video cards.

My search goes on to find the top products. When I recommend or install a product, it has to be reliable because people tend to compare the reliability of the product with your reliability.
