Heh..I saw this on a Fender forum, and liked it so much I stole it. Probably more fun for us over-40's but, can you name 5 songs from your first bands' reportoire?

Mine (Bands name was Blackrose, circa 1974):

Love Me Please (slow blues)

Tell Mamma

Southern Man

Done Somebody Wrong

I just want to make love to you

First "gig" I played was as a 3 piece, (1 guitar, 1 guitar/vox, 1 vox), opening for The Spoons at a high school concert dance. I was in grade 11, I think.

We did

Rumble In Brighton - Stray Cats

Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues

Ziggy Stardust - Bowie

The next event was a school variety night. With a 5 piece band we played

Distemper - an original instrumental tune

Tokyo - Bruce Cockburn

In the Crowd - The Jam

So that's 6 tunes......

Peace,

Paul

Cat Scratch Fever - Nugent

Living After Midnight - Judas Priest (every garage band in the area played this freaking song... now I can't listen to it anymore).

Somebody Get Me a Doctor - Van Halen

Working Man - Rush

Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin

... and last but not least... this one is totally embarrassing

Dirty White Boy - Foreigner

I hated this song but the rest of the band liked it.

This could go either way, we did 100's of songs.

I'll do 5 bad and 5 good.

Good:

Crossroads

Hidaway

Pride and Joy

Peace Love and Understanding

Behind Blue Eyes

(lots of 60's rock and folk)

Bad:

Margaritaville

Never even called me by my Name

Up against the wall Redneck Mother

Teddy Bear

The Chair

(we did a few country songs, mostly the real pop stuff that I hated)

Wow...

I played my first gig with a band my best friend and I put together in summer camp when I was 12. I don't remember which songs we played, but it was a Jewish camp, so we played a bunch of hebrew songs and Debbie Friedman tunes out of a thick songbook the camp published. Most of the songs were unavailable to the average consumer at their local music store (Imagine that! ;) ) so many people opted to buy a copy.

The only individual song I remember was Friedman's Not By Might, Not By Power.

After that I wasn't in a real band until senior year of highschool. We formed to play a huge arts festival my highschool hosts every four years called Focus On The Arts. In addition to poets, writers, tv personalities (Oprah, among them), musicians (Last year, Howard Levy made the long 10 mile trek. ;) ) photographers, dancers, etc. they have bands from the student body play during lunch.

We played:

  • Spirit Of The Radio - Rush
  • Walkin' On A Thin Line - Huey Lewis & The News
  • Magic - The Cars
  • You Might Think - The Cars
  • and Just What I Needed - The Cars

.

What can I say? It was 1984-5 and I couldn't play Van Halen. ;):D

It's easiest to find me on Facebook. Neil Bergman

"When I Look In Your Eyes" - The Romantics

"What I Like About You" - The Romantics

"Just Can't Stop Me" - J. Geils Band

"Tired of Waiting For You" - Kinks

"You Can't Do That" - Beatles

Junior year of high school (Spring 1980). All songs were played poorly but with much enthusiasm at a friend's graduation party. We got paid! :thu:

Hmmm, that was a long time ago. It would have been about 20 years ago.

I was the guitar player in a three piece. I think the first few songs were:

-Led Zep - The Ocean

-The Beatles - Don't Let Me Down

-Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe

-Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

-Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl

I'm not a hundred percent sure about the order though...

Rock Bottom - UFO

Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith

Make It Last - Montrose

Snortin' Whiskey - Pat Travers

Can't Get Enough Of Your Love - Bad Co.

Nothing is as it seems but everything is exactly what it is - B. Banzai

Life is what happens while you are busy playing in bands.

Hummm...let's see. The first paid show I ever did was like 18 or so years ago. A private party at a state park inside this pavillion. It started with me and the bass player singing the theme song to the Bugs Bunny Show...you remeber it..."Overture, curtain lights, this is it, the night of night's."...etc

Then we bust into "Somebody Get Me A Doctor"...YYZ...Victim Of Changes...Sin City & Winter Snow (original I wrote).

If I did a big Townsend windmill and hit my had on the light trusses I got a big electric shock...surprised I didn't kill myself! :D

These are the ones that were on list one and I think they were from set one.

Communication Breakdown

The Ocean

Whole Lotta Love

Rock & Roll

Bring it on Home

Sets 2 and 3 were dominated by Areosmith and ZZTop. We had a rather narrow musical appreciation as teenagers!

Once we were old enough to drink (not necessarily of age!) things got more interesting.

ya.. I remember playing I think I'm Going Bald by Rush and Oh War from Max Webster.. Anus of Uranus Klaatu and other wierd stuff we didn't pull off very well.

.. oops.. forgot.. band name: Live Garbage. we made customized silk screened shirts with flies and roaches all over them.

I still think guitars are like shoes, but louder.

First gig that wasn`t improvs or originals was at The Farmhouse in Taipei. I`ve got the set list buried somewhere but I`ll see what I can recall offhand:

Travelin Light-J.J Cale (my idea)

One Bad Stud-Dyke & The Blazers (used to be announced as `our favorite lesbian preppy band`)

Hustle down in Texas-Johnny Winter (contributed by the other guitarist who was actually a jazz player).

Sea Cruise-Bobby Darren (I think)

Little Wing-Skipclone`s moment in the solo spotlight-we divided it between guitar and sax, loved the segue.

crap, I have to amend this a little-the improv-based band I was in did do a few covers but we never played out. Fortunately we did record most of our stuff. The covers I can recall offhand (note the contrast when money isn`t involved):

Blue World-Moody Blues

Phase Dance-Pat Metheny

Blue Wind-Jeff Beck

Franklin`s Tower-Grateful Dead

Same old surprises, brand new cliches-

What a fun question. I hadn't thought about it in years.

The band was "The Knights of Day"

Little Black Egg - The Nightcrawlers

Out of Limits - The Marketts

I'm a Man - The Yardbirds

Knock on Wood - Eddie Floyd

Till the End of the Day - The Kinks

Plus all those I, IV, V'rs like Gloria, Louie Louie, Hang on Sloopy etc.

These were early ones, the band was together all through high school and in the 60's there were a lot of great songs. We could do an 4 hour set easily by '68 when I graduated.

I got hooked up with a guy from high school that played bass and we were gonna get a singer and drummer. So he is talking about a band that he's friends with (more guys from the same school) and we go see them. Long story short, they ask me to join. I seriously believe that the only reason the wanted me was because I had a half stack. (A completely BAD-ASS Carvin X100, it was incredible! Wish I still had that one!) I was still a little self conscience about my ability and they were really good. Long story short, about the time that I joined they all ended up hating each other and we broke up. Some of the songs we played that I remember were:

Fire - Hendrix

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Enter Sandman - Metallica

Outshined - Soundgarden

Several originals that they wrote before I joined, a couple of which I still remember as being really good songs. Wish I had a tape of them now.

Avoid playing the amplifier at a volume setting high enough to produce a distorted sound through the speaker-Fender Guitar Course-1966

  • 1 month later...

Beatles - Taxman

Tragically Hip - New Orleans Is Sinking

Stones - Honky Tonk Women

Tom Petty - Runnin Down a Dream

Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl

plus numerous hits in the same vein.

Would have loved to have done some Bluesbreakers, and some blues, but I joined in pretty late in the game, and they had their set list down.
