OT - David Lee Roth in the Morning

Any of you Van Halen fans been listening to the new David Lee Roth morning radio show? Starting this week he took over for Stern here in NY on KROCK 92.3. He's also broadcasting in a bunch of other major markets across the country including Philly, Dallas, Boston, Clevland, Pittsburgh, West Palm Beach and more. You can even listen to him on the web if he's not in your city.

I think he "hit the ground running" and is doing a great job. Its only been 3 shows but I enjoy listening to him. He riffs on "mature" topics but always has his rock and roll attitude showing through.

Aww, get off Roth's back. Everybody has to make a living, and at least he isn't writing tell-all books about how Eddie got the elevator and he got the shaft...sofar... look, we all had at least a few good moments listening to his music, so let's cut him some slack. We might need some ourselves one day...

Always remember that youre unique. Just like everyone else.

I've been trying to listen. It cool to listen to him talk because he sounds so hip, but he doesn't have much to say yet.

However, this morning, he did take credit for the stipe pattern on EVH's first guitar (the famous one with all the stipe). He also took credit for the album designs on the first VH albums. I don't know if that is true or not, but he got my attention.

Do any of you guys know if that is accurate, or just Dave talking.

I listened a couple of times. He was trying to be controversial and funny and was not succeeding.

He is boring and not very witty. He doesn't seem to have any convictions either way. One minute he is telling people how to raise their kids and the next minute he is talking about taking drugs. In a month he will be back begging to tour with Van Halen again.

Well, he can't be much worse than Howard Stern. I thought he SUCKED!! We are lucky in Detroit to have the best morning show--Drew & Mike. In fact when Stern tried to come into Detroit, Drew & Mike kicked his ass with ratings and he was dumped. Stern was so pissed, he monitored the D & M so for a year to see what they were doing.

It is a tough business really, you have to entertain the public for like 5 hours or something. Nobody can do it without a little down time. Roth is a brilliant guy and he definatley can talk a mile a minute.

Ted Nugent had a show in Detroit for a while but then all he ever talked about were guns and hunting. Got old fast, as did all of his preaching about conservative values and how you will suck on guitar if you smoke pot. But he worships Hendrix and Van Halen, and had a habit of cheating on all his women. How is cheating on your women conservative?

I'm not gonna defend Howard Stern on an internet forum... that'd just be a waste of time.

To put it simply, however, his show isn't just radio porn. There is quite a lot of depth to it.

But... different strokes for different folks.

I agree with Eric. Although Howard can be downright crude, he is not as one-dimensional as some people would think. You'd have to listen to hinm for a while to see he actually has convictions and is well-informed. He can be hilariously funny or really rude and nasty...that's when I usually turn him off.

Is there anything wrong with radio porn hehe. Howard Stern is smart and witty. They spent alot of time preparing for the shows and had a good caste of characters.

Roth just came on and started rambling on a broad range of unrelated topics. He sounds like he did no preparation for the gig. He may be a little bit funny, but any comedian has to prepare material. To do a daily radio show, you have to work hard and prepare a TON of material in case something doesn't pan out.

Maybe Roth will get a funny cast of characters around him and some good writers to carry the show, but his name alone isn't enough to carry him anymore.

I agree with you rw2003...

Despite what we can think about the 'old/over-the-top' persona, I objectively think he's doing a great job.

I've listened to him for the past few days and the guy is NOT an idiot.

He's well-read and has a nice radio voice.

More power to him...

...but we're here to talk about guitars and guitar playing.. :)

Yeah, different strokes and all that..

As for Ted though, I think he is a personality and is similar to Roth in his wit. I like a few of his solos but I never got the preaching about hunting. I think Nuge's show ran for liek a year or 2.

Roth is just the kind of guy who will roll with the punches for a few weeks and eventually he will get his stride.

I would love to hear Joe Walsh as a host. GOD!!! That would be hilarious.

No denying it, I'm a Van Halen and David Lee Roth fan from the beginning. He's a week into the show - well at least four shows in - and has done well so far. He's basically taking lots of phone calls, discussing "news" topics and injecting his opinionated personality and swagger at all times.

He's got a guy who works the board and plays some loops from Dave's own personal record collection to which Dave sings along to. He also has a resident guitarist - Brian(?) Young - who plays live in the studio with him. The guy plays a few licks in and out of the loops and also plays when Dave ask him to. He's not coping any EVH licks. His style is much less flashy.

DLR's filling some pretty big shoes in terms of taking up when Stern left and he's doing well.

To all of those who can't tune into the broadcast, you can listen live on the internet or listen to clips after the show is over. Check out his website.
