  1. Might be late to the party, but is connecting a dual manual controller (such as the GSi DMC-122) or two external MIDI boards to independently control both organ manuals still a no go? i.e. Yamaha has not yet implemented different MIDI channel to control the upper and lower organ parts?  Or has there been a workaround included in an update that would allow this?

  2. Recently my band has started trying to get all the stems from the sound guy after a gig in case there's anything useable for a live recording we could put out.  Does anyone have any experience mixing layered sounds for a recording?  Specifically a keys patch (piano, rhodes, etc.) layered with a pad or strings.  I currently have a MODX+ which only has 1 set of outputs, so I can't separate outputs of layered sounds like you can with a Nord Stage 3 for example.  My main concern is if I'm going to have to get another board to separate the outputs in the stems - I don't really touch any of the mixing in the band, so I'm not sure how much of a pain this could be if not separated.

     

    On the other hand though, in terms of the actual live performance, sending one set of outputs to the engineer could prevent them from messing with your volume balance in a way you don't want, so I guess there might be a tradeoff there.

  3. I recently got a MODX+ which is great but I find that the patch volumes can vary greatly especially between external libraries and such.  

     

    Just wondering what methods you guys use to equalize patch volumes.  Do you go through each one manually and just use your ears, or do you prefer taking the guesswork out of the equation by using a meter of some sort?  I know the MODX specifically has volume meters per part, but a difficulty might be that not all sounds stay at the same uniform volume through the duration played and multiple parts stacked might make it hard to tell where the overall volume should be.  Maybe there are other potential methods as well that I'm missing (besides maybe not giving a care about equalization and making the sound engineer's night a living hell).

  4. Looking to get one of these to potentially incorporate an iPad into my gigging rig.  How involved is the process for switching MIDI output between the MIDI out port and the USB port?  For example, if I have a synth module connected to the MIDI out port, and my iPad connected to the USB port, can switching between the two be done quickly (ideally with minimal button presses), or would menu diving be involved?  I would assume there would be some use of its zone implementation (which I don't quite fully grasp yet after skimming the manual).

     

    And in another situation, if I had two apps on two different MIDI channels on my iPad (and nothing connected to the MIDI out port), what would be the process in switching between those two?  Or would that have to be handled on the iPad instead?

    The product I'm referring to is the "Stage Electro".  This is a rebadged Stage but with just Slot A. They could even remove the Ext MIDI section so it would be closer to an Electro but it would have a proper synth engine.  It would sell for a little more than the Electro 6. And Nord could offer an upgrade to 'unlock' Slot B. 

     

    Now this doesn't solve the shortage of chips and components so an alternative would be to redesign the Stage PCB to just offer Slot A. Not sure how much that would reduce the component count though. The heavy hitters who need both Slots can just make do with a Stage 4  with double the memory? 

     

    I'll get back my coat.....

    Nord can shut up and take my money if they make this and include aftertouch with it.

  6. Just recently got a Fantom-06, but it seems that there is a latency for the bend to apply using the internal stick/wheel. I'm thinking that the pitch bend position is polled at such a low rate by the Fantom that quick back and forth movements cancel each other out, resulting in a very unsatisfying, low movement vibrato. I tried changing the pitch bend range, but get the same issue (low vibrato movement but at a pitch farther away). I tried this with an external pitch bend and did not have this problem. It's a shame as I love the sounds, but this issue could very likely be a dealbreaker for me.

    Anyone else have this problem or know if there's a fix for this?

    +1 for this suggestion.  Lightest stand available, once your adjustments are made, set up and tear down are literally seconds.  Being aluminum you can cut off 2-3 inches off the 18881 stacker if necessary.

    Would you be able to use this without the crossbar (like shown in the picture) or is the stand too unstable without it?  I have some smaller boards that wouldn’t fit across the stand if the crossbar is used

  9. This is the current setup I'm using right now. 

     

    I got the Mobius for cheap to begin with and just stuck with it.  Sometimes I wonder if there are stand alone pedals that would beat out the individual effects on the Mobius, but honestly they all sound really good to me and the form factor is definitely a plus.  The effects on there beat out the ones on the Nord pretty handily, especially the vibe for me.

     

    The Iridium might be a little overkill considering the price, but "amping" the EPs through it gives the extra guts that were missing sometimes - and I wasn't about to get a whole new amp/mic setup to lug around with me to rehearsals and gigs.  

     

    I don't even know if I want to talk about the Deco.  Just buy it lol.  The tape saturation is that good.  I'm also considering whether or not I have to get a delay pedal as I'm not really a delay guy and the tape echo on the Deco + digital delay on the Nord seems like it would be the extent of what I need.

     

    I mainly got the Red Panda Context 2 for the cathedral reverb and form factor.  Honestly I can barely hear the difference between a plate and hall reverb, so I wasn't that picky.  Had a Bigsky but just couldn't play well with the bigger sounding verbs and the smaller verbs sounded a little too artificial to me.

     

    Still have a decent amount of space left on the board.  Probably gonna get a bitcrusher (Red Panda Bitmap 2) for some weirder sounds.  Maybe a delay pedal if I ever get the need to figure out how to use delays properly.  Not sure what else would be useful to me though but maybe I'll get some more ideas from this thread.

I recently built a pedalboard using Pedaltrain Nano max that I use with EPs on my Nord Piano.  I would like to take it out with me in rehearsals and gigs and such - if I didn't have 2 keyboards in my setup (Nord Piano + Minilogue XD), I would just put the pedalboard on the 2nd tier of my usual X-stand.  I probably would do this any time I don't need to take the extra synth with me, but alas I need to find another piece of gear for when this is not the case.  Right now I am considering getting another keyboard stand to place the pedalboard on to use beside me.  I was thinking another X-stand could work as the pedalboard is 28 inches long - long enough that it wouldn't make it unwieldy. 

     

    I already have enough gear to schlep as is, so I'm trying to find the lightest/most convenient possible solution for this, one that I could likely carry in 1 arm along with the other stand. 

     

    Here are some of the options I've already found:

    K&M 18880 (https://www.k-m.de/en/products/keyboard-stands/keyboard-tables/18880-table-style-keyboard-stand-black) - 3.18kg, advantage being that length adjustments don't affect the height.  I was actually considering replacing my current stand with the 3 tier option as well, but the length required for the synth/pedalboard would be too small to confidently hold the bigger keyboard underneath.

     

    K&M 18969 (https://www.k-m.de/en/products/keyboard-stands/x-stands/18969-keyboard-stand-for-kids-black?c=170) - 3kg, small kids size so height would be better at low lengths than a regular sized stand.  Also very slightly lighter and easier to transport I would assume than the K&M 18880.

     

    K&M 18997 (https://www.k-m.de/en/products/keyboard-stands/x-stands/18997-keyboard-stand-black?c=170) - 2.45kg, lightest X-stand I've found and actually the stand that I use already.  I could just get another one.

     

    Stay Compact (https://www.staymusicstands.com/products/supports-for-keyboards/compact/compact/) - 2kg, lightest stand out of anything I've seen so far and would probably be my number 1 choice if I could actually find a way to get the thing to Canada.

     

    Anyone else have any other suggestions?  Maybe there are some other kids-sized stands out there or something.

    As the others have mentioned, the weight is absolutely manageable. What's awkward is the balance, and most of all lifting up the thing on your shoulders, and then putting it down. You have to squat very carefully not be thrown off balance and risk falling down. Ideally, you should have a table or chair to do it, first putting the keyboard on it so it's roughly at shoulder level. Otherwise, it's VERY unconfortable. I ended up just carrying it by the side handle most of the time.

    But once it's on, is it easy enough to keep balance while walking, or is it still a bit of a struggle?  Also, if you took it out of a car, you wouldn't really have a chair or table to assist you right?  So I'm assuming that would have been a pain to load on your shoulders in that case.

    I'm 5'9" and I tried the backpack thing on my lighter CP4. I have a strong back from years of back raises, lat pulls and seated cable rows. And I would call myself pretty fit for my age, 68. Before I sustained two stress fractures in my L knee, I regularly squatted 45 of the bar + a pair of 35s...so a tad over a 100. Right now I'm just doing the hack squat and 45 degree angle leg press, both light weight, to keep some gym strength till this heals up better.

     

    But the backpack thing did not agree with my back at all with an old Yamaha YB88 soft bag that I had the luggage store add some back pack straps. I bagged it after two moves...and that was an easy schlep, no stairs.

     

    You can try it and see how it affects your back. You didn't mention your age but I will say I was schlepping the 70+ lb. CP300 fairly regularly till almost age 60. Much changed dramatically in my 60s.

     

    Looks like a nice case that would move the NG efficiently, and at a lower price then their dedicated case.

     

     

     

    I'm actually the ripe old age of 26 but I'd like to think I still have some life left in my back.  But you make a good point with the rain and ice scenario - maybe in that case I'd just use the backpack straps for indoor stairs and use the handle outside.  I really wish I could try it before I buy but buying and returning if I can't handle it would be a huge hassle, especially when my local music store would have to order both in as neither the Grand nor the Gator case are currently in stock. 

     

    Alternatively, I could just get a Nord Piano 5 73 and call it a day, but that wouldn't be as fun.

My trips are usually quite short, but I need to go up and down flights of stairs whenever I go out, and I've found that using a backpack style case for boards is the easily most painless method of transport in this case.  The heaviest I've gone is around 25-30lbs, but my back was consistently able to handle it with not much stress.

     

    So now I'm considering getting a Nord Grand for home and gig use, and a big reason is that fits in a Gator Pro-Go backpack style case almost perfectly:  https://www.gatorcases.com/products/keyboard/pro-go-ultimate-keyboard-gig-bags/pro-go-keyboard/slim-88-note-keyboard-gig-bag-g-pg-88slim/

     

    The question now is if transporting a board as heavy as the Nord Grand (which is about 46lbs) in a backpack case for relatively short trips is a good idea or if I'm crazy for even considering it.  I actually think it's more of a concern regarding the shape rather than the weight - I have carried a 50lb backpack before, but a backpack is a much more compact load compared to an 88 key board, which would be a fairly lopsided and loom a bit over your head (or at least my head, since I'm around 5'7).  Maybe awkward balance issues could arise?  I also regularly squat at the gym where the bar alone is 45lbs, but I don't know if that means much since the weight distribution and actual movement are so different from walking with a heavy backpack. 

     

    But if anything, Gator is still selling these backpack cases, so that is some indication to me that they somewhat serve their purpose well?

  14. Anybody using a YC88/CP88 as a bottom board for a Nord? I have Stage 3 Compact and am looking for a weighted action for a dual board setup.  My main question is if the CP88 action plays well when triggering Nord acoustic pianos.  I realize using both keyboards in one setup might be a little redundant sound wise and I would probably be triggering the Nord most of the time, but there definitely are some sounds on the CP that have their own use unique to that keyboard.  For example, I'm not really a fan of the CP stock acoustic pianos but using advanced mode to put one in the sub section and turning the release all the way down gives a sound that I hear a lot of Gospel players use and a one that I could really use in some situations - this can't be done with the piano samples on the red keyboard.  I can also see myself using some of the EPs especially with the on-board effects as they do provide a different sound.

  15. Anybody know if the Pro-Go 88 Key bag would fit a MOXF? The interior dimensions on the Gator site say 57"x18"x6.25" and the MOXF is 52"x16"x6.6". Would that extra .35" on the MOXF depth be enough that this case wouldn't fit? Anyone have experience with the reliability/weight tolerance of the backpack straps as well? I heard they were attached to the bag with velcro which to me seems somewhat questionable.

    I currently have a CP73 and it doesn't sound nearly as detailed as that YC performance...granted the performance itself is very nuanced. Although it does seem to be a running theme for me when it comes to Youtube demos of Yamaha pianos vs when I actually play them for myself in person - maybe it has something to do with the EQ...

     

    I may be missing something, but it seems like the YC73 and YC88 have everything the CP's have, plus a drawbar clone. That's a lot of overlap, so does the CP line even continue after this? I think a lot of folks were expecting a semi-weighted YC73, so this is a bit of a surprise but still makes sense.

     

    So now Yamaha has a whole line of keyboards crippled by a bad leslie sim. They'd have to be deaf, dumb, and blind not to realize that they need to have their engineers working day and night to fix this problem.

     

    I'm probably less troubled by it that most YC owners, because I rarely use either upper drawbars or fast leslie. Larry Young's sound on Unity and Into Sometin' is my happy place, and the YC sounds great there.

     

    The main difference from what I can tell is that you can have layer up to 3 sounds of your choice on the CP, whereas the YC limits you to 2 max plus organ if you want. The pricing on the CP series also seems to be cheaper, so non-organ players will probably gravitate more towards that. The YC does seem to have a more versatile effects system when it comes to upgrades though.

I'm thinking of paring this with a Gemini DSP Sound module and a set of hardware MIDI drawbars (D9X) for an a true all-in-one single board solution. Not the end of the world if a module can't fit in that open space but it would be pretty dang convenient.

     

    Do you already own the Gemini? If investing in the Nord Wave 2 and their sample library, Is be inclined to get a Mojo desktop with the drawbars included.

     

    I don't, but I would probably get the Gemini + D9X over the Mojo desktop due to the additional EP sounds.
