  1. Hook up a MIDI Monitor and watch where the message comes from.

I"ve got a hardware MIDI Monitor, a VST Host one and several DSP Based monitors in my project window.

Nothing escapes the eye of Teamster Jim.

I"m highly automated live and call up screensets to view every SysEx or CC that passes my wires.

My guess is Cubase activates a default setting in Montage.

CC# 11 might be causing trouble as it is the same as CC# 7 depending the hardware or software.

It"s basically another volume in software with lag processing to give the appearance as a 'swell'...

Thanks my friend, I am going to give this a second look.

  2. Until you figure out why this is happenening, maybe you can filter out CC7 either from Montage or Cubase side. I had a somewhat similar issue not with CC7 but another controller. Every time I saved the midi file on Korg Pa4x, a controller number would get added to every track within that file that wasn't there before. Now If I imported that same file back into Pro Tools and play it back through the same keyboard, some tracks would randomly transpose to different keys. I was never able to figure out why this was happening. Filtering and removing that data was quick and easy so that's how I did it.

    Thanks for the response!

The issue I am having occurs each time I change a patch and it is freaking annoying when attempting to browse patches/voices.

I have tried removing CC7 but it does not seem to make a difference.

Going back to see what else I can change. :)

  3. Hello my friends:

I have a Yamaha Montage 8 configured in Cubase 10.5. I am also using the Patch file which allows me to select and change instruments in the Montage directly from the MIDI Track in Cubase.

All is working except the Volume keeps getting loud (reset) each time I change an instrument (voice/patch).

I know why this is happening but not certain where to stop this.

In the Montage there is a (Program Change) setting under Utility --> Advance.

If I turn this off the issue goes away. however, changing or controlling the Montage will not work, rightfully so because no controller message is received.

In the Montage I also change the Controller Settings from Reset to Hold but this does not make a difference.

Something is resetting/sending the CC7 Controller messaging from Cubase each time I change instruments but I am not sure where this setting is.

One important note is, if I click on the Volume Control on the MIDI track, the volume goes to normal but it gets loud as soon as I change the instrument, which as I stated, is resetting the CC7 Message to some default level.

I have attempted to ask in Cubase forum but no one appears to know the answer.

Perhaps another Montage user have had similar experience

  4. Yes. People still paint paintings, take picture, and do a thousand other things that have been done many times before. There are 30M+ tracks on Spotify, and yet people still write new music every day. Every time we create we make meaning - at least for ourselves. That is enough. Whether simply taking a preset and slightly customizing it for purpose, or starting from INIT, the result is something that satisfies the judgement of the most important person - whoever is making the changes. This is the essential conceit of all art - this is so because I wish it to be so. This power of choice - to either use the preset sound, or to create one fresh, or modify is part of the creative arc. It will be with us as long as humans are alive, even if there are 100M more patches released next year. Every one of those patches meant something to the creator, but may not mean much to me. And for that reason, sound design will endure. Not everyone will design sounds, just like not everyone plays an instrument or whatever, but some will find deep and enduring meaning in it. I know I'm glad Eric @ Spectrasonics still likes sound design... and that U-he still wants to design synths, etc.

    Very well stated. :)

  5. I should think you would receive a range of views given the diversity of the forum. Most (if any) sound design I do these days is about two things:

    - fitting a sound into it's role (timbrally in the mix, longitudinally for the speed of notes, etc.)

    - experimenting a bit at the edge of sound desgn to see if something with character pops up (e.g. took dog for walk, the frogs were croaking up a storm, sampled them on the phone, used the sample in a ring modulated sound bed, result has a different personality than using a sample and hold/ lfo modulated pattern, song might evolve differently, different = good!)

What I've discussed above are both traditional sonic roles, but if you think about sound for new musical roles, I think you need new ways of playing sounds to create new idioms. The Fantom will likely do existing things better than some other tools, but like you I doubt it will create a new musical style or a new way of playing. (Some new hit songs may use the new factory patches. That seems to happen in LA when a new Roland drops.)

Whether you consider something fresh may depend on your background. There are more people than ever using modular synths and chasing novel sounds. Great question! HTH.

    Very interesting response.

I am friends with a lot of EDM artists and majority refer to themselves as Sound Designers.

But to your point regarding incidental creativity, I was doing vocals last night and shortly before the song, I chugged some tea and preceeded to shake the tea in my mouth and the recording is amazing! That was not my intentions but it happened and it sounds like a guitar, kind of funky BeeGees like groove.

  6. I have never used a Soft-Synth but browsing the web, there are millions of sounds out there, for example, The Komplete 12 and all the synths from the 50's to now.

I realized not everyone has access to the same tools and resources but I hear people talking about sound design and I am wondering if anything created today is truly new or unique?

Another example: The new Roland Fantom, is the sound going to be different than all that is already released?

This question is not to put down creativity but rather about curiosity as to the possibility of creating something that does not already exist.

I see the value if, you do not have an array of sounds and synths but giving where Soft Synth is, is there really something that has not been made?

  7. Do you have Zebra2?

Be happy to share the patch, you can then study its settings and see why all of the motion is so desirable.

    Thanks, my friend!

That is very kind of you!

I do not have Zibra2, Ironically, I have never used a Soft-Synth before, however, I am thinking about it.

I can still download a trial and check it out.

    Thanks again!

  8. Does anyone with experience have an opinion about the experience of sampling into a Korg vs. Yamaha vs. Kurzweil? Is one significantly better at importing and working with samples? All three have adequate space, the Kurzweil being the most generous (and having VAST). The Yamaha has super knob and great modulation... And so it goes... Thoughts?

I currently have both Yamaha Montage 8 and Kronos 8.

Unlike the Korg, the Montage does not directly sample audio and does not have a Sampler. There is a free software called Sample Robot, you can use this to sample sounds via an audio interface and then import the file into the Montage to be played as a Sample.

The Kronos as with all Korg Workstation has a native sampler built right in, just connect your audio source and start sampling.

    Korg has a 24-bit sampling.

I have not used the Kronos to sample but have used the Triton and I was very impressed.

If you want a truly clean sound, then go with the Montage because you get to use HD audio from your Audio Interface, like 24bits 192Khz with better conversion and simply dump the file to the Montage, with the Kronos, you have to rely on the internal converters and sample rates.

Here is that Sample Robot Software for the Montage.

  9. Hello to all.

So, as far as I can remember I have been hearing this sound, especially in the 80's and early 90's and always wanted to create it but like most musicians today, I used available samples and became lazy.

However, I want to be able to create this myself but not certain how it works.

I am referring to the Portamento slides between keys or octaves.

Take a listen to the intro on this song by Keith Sweat.

Here is another song by Boyz 2 Men, same at the intro:

And finally, here it is again, Bruno Mars:

I mean this sound is all over the 80's.

I want to be able to incorporate this into my songs using those sexy synth basses.

I currently own the Korg Kronos 8 and the Yamaha Montage 8 and an array of other keys.

Doing a google search, I see all kinds of suggestions that get me nowhere.

    Thanks for your help!
