  3. Yeah, I love this tune. It sounds very peaceful, all things considered (all things being Zappa). And what about this tune, Eat That Question? [video:youtube] Based on a single riff. Duke's solo is so energetic, propulsed by the Dunbar's drums. And then, at the end, the riff comes back, but in a very different and amazing arrangement. It's the same riff, but mutated. Lovely stuff. The other great tune from this album, in my opinion, is For Calvin. You get a feeling of unrest, probably because it sounds like there's extensive use of the augmented scale (I have not checked that out, but that's my guess). Awesome arrangements towards the second half of the tune.
  4. I'm a fan of The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka (two different albums that could've been a double). Mostly instrumental, with some great tunes with a more jazz rock oriented sound from the early 70s, and awesome musicians (with no other than George Duke at keyboards). I'm a fan of the more instrumental material. Uncle Meat has some great stuff too. I love the very polyrhythmic main tune. Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh are also favorites of mine. For good music + corrosive lyrics + conceptual album, my favorite one is Absolutely Free. Check out the amazing Brown Shoes Don't Make It: it's Zappa in a nutshell.

  8. In my experience, I would've talked about it before the gig. If I were the singer, I would've said something like "hey, guys, we need a mixer and two speakers for this gig. Does anyone have those or can borrow it from someone? Otherwise, we could hire what we need and split the cost". I think that would be reasonable. And then, I would talk about the convenience of having at least a mixer and two speakers of your own and the possible ways to fund the investment. Years ago, I was in a band of five (we did some classic Santana covers) and decided to buy two speakers and their poles among the five of us. It was a small investment for each one of us. Nowadays I own one of the speakers and play with someone who owns the other one.
  9. And I should have to wait if I want to get the KP-500S. It costs twice what the SSV3 costs. And it sounds twice as good at least. It also has four times as many inputs. And it is half as difficult to find the best position for it. ;-) I'll need some advanced math to work that out. You sold me. I'm not getting any amp. For now. I'll focus on the keyboard first. If I need more low frequencies I've got a pair of powerful PPAs that are decent enough until I figure out how to upgrade my amplification.

  11. And to make my choice more difficult now I'm reading a few pages back WWW saying that the new lighter version doesn't sound good at all. I didn't even know about this lite version (but looks like it's the one I would get if I ordered it now).

  13. I'm back to thinking the SSV3 (+sub if needed, depending on type of gig) is the way to go. Many people here praise the Motion Sound KP500-S, but as long as there is 0 distribution within the euro zone (and with Brexit around the corner) that's not even an option. Besides, economy and weight are also important. I'm thinking of gigs at small clubs, cafes, etc. I've been using a Peavey Classic 50 and PPAs, and I think I'm selling the former soon. With the money I can get from it, I almost can get the SSV3. Also, I'm planning on selling a Hammond X-5 that I have and getting a Crumar Mojo XT.

  15. Would you say the k8.2 would be a good addition for someone who intends to play mainly Hammond organ sounds on a clonewheel (say, Crumar Mojo) with LH bass (no pedals to begin with)? I'm planning to upgrade my amplification prior to upgrading the keyboard, and I'm thinking ahead. The SSV3+sub looks nice, but I'm a bit scared and good PPAs look like a safer option.
  16. Hi. My name is Dani. Dani is short for Daniel in Spain, where I'm from. Since Dani wasn't available, I finally chose Danielo to register in this forum. I play keyboards. Not as a full time job, but it's definitely my main hobby and years ago it became an alternative source of income. I have a "portable" (according to 1979 standards) Hammond X-5, which is some sort of solid state spinet. Yeah, "portable". I've never played a Hammond organ (as in B3, C3, A100..), although the concept of Hammond organ is my main focus in terms of sound, at least today. I'm rehearsing with some guys and we're doing some Booker T & The MGs, The Meters, some blues and some more Soul Jazz oriented stuff. There's a bass player, but I'm also interested in updating my gear so that in the future I can do gigs alone, as a duo or as a trio. Oh, and real portability. I've been reading this forum the last few weeks because I need to be educated in terms of gear and gain stating, among other more technical things of which I've always been very ignorant.
