  1. "What happened to the Brad Mehldau thread?" You mean the Rick Beato thread? I'm surprised anybody noticed, as my intent was to create a thread on Mehldau, but it immediately turned into a thread on Rick Beato, which was not my intention, hence the deletion. Someone else can create that thread. (I do admit guilt for lazily using Beato's YouTube title, which some felt was too egregious to allow stand). If there is anyone who feels their contribution on Brad were unceremoniously nuked to their detriment, please let Dave Bryce know and I will support the thread's reinstatement (if possible).
  2. Here is Lenise Bent talking about recording Aja. A couple of highlights: - Warner Bothers threatened to shut down the recording and mix it themselves after taking so long, so Lenise kept the masters in her car between sessions. - Donald took 4 days to record “Well the” vocal on Home At Last. - The guys were serious as a heart attack.
  3. Who's the dancing tenor player - is that the TOP guy, Lenny Pickett? Yes, that's him! The tune was appropriately, "You Ought to be Havin' Fun".
  4. Good for Caitlin! I’m perched here up in Ames and root for those pesky Hawkeyes when I can but I’d like to see McCaffrey and Ferrentz run out on a rail. 😄
  5. Someone famous enough to warrant that kind of advance in 1972, is not really who this conversation is about, right? Though I, too, question that figure. Maybe a fish tale…? $150k in 1972? Jazz? Organ? The probabilities when multiplied essentially equal zero. I'm trying to wrack my brain. Organists who played with Miles? Zawinul? Nope. Maybe the great one? No he was earlier than 72. I do think that Lee Ritenour has had a continual unbroken recording contract for 56 years and may hold a world record.
  6. Can you summarize what happened to Phil Collins that he didn't deserve? It's behind a paywall on my system and wayback has not archived it yet.
  7. John Scofield “I Don’t Need No Doctor” - The Late Show’s Commercial Breakdown. What an infectious groove!
  8. Master the Frasier variations in all 12 keys? Along those lines though…. Take a few of your favorite songs to play and master them in a new key. Get that key into your muscle comfort zone. I’ve been doing this a lot and it’s both fun and rewarding.
  9. In the words of the late great Bernard McGuirk, "Which doesn't belong and Why?" Fairly Clearly Obvious
  10. The lone MVP voter for Allen, and Sherm, make the quantitative case against Lamar. Dak and Josh had clearly better seasons based on the numbers. Plus, Lamar has moved the goalposts and has set a new standard - First MVP QB to fall below top ten ranking in both of the key QB metrics -- Season TD Passes (11th) and Passing Ydg (15th). It's a personality contest.
  11. https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-mvp-lamar-jackson-wins-award-for-second-time-enters-elite-company-034503855.html Shouldn't this be in the Grammys thread? That award spectacle was something.
  12. I think that’s Frank Rizzo. He’s been relegated strictly to piano work after he got sidelined for kicking the dog around the house prior to anger management treatment.
  13. That allays my concerns because I had not seen a block diagram from Yamaha that shows their USB digital output to be identical to the input to their high fidelity analog circuit. Thanks for clarifying that it is. Now that means that the standalone Vst is bit for bit identical to the Montage HW internally and the vst consumer can produce an even better analog circuit if so desired, as you mention. Makes you wonder why the Montage isn’t just a keybed and a PC chipset with an audio interface. I guess it is?
  14. There's a fine line between _____ and country. Endlessly discussed over the years, jazz included. Here's an example from the adjacent Michael Omartian thread on how Steely Dan was sort of actually country back in the 70s. They used him for that sound. Pay attention to the last line from the master..... "Yeah". Omar2.mp4
  15. Also, compare the Montage M Analog Circuit. (new analog low distortion outputs) to the VST. I'm not paying for a Sampled Montage M (USB Digital Out). Montage M USB Digital Out is not the Analog Circuit.
  16. Meanwhile, as Peter Cetera can't play anymore, and Omar effortlessly bangs out his Steely Dan parts, he reflects on their collaboration. DX1 Strings on "Next Time I Fall..." Omar3.mp4 Peter fires Omar for "not enough sales" Oma4.mp4 Ok, I'll quit now, but Michael is one of my heros.
  17. Omar talking about how Steely Dan's most famous recording (Rikki) is actually "Country", and demonstrating with the piano and guitar tracks. "Did Donald know he was recording a Country Tune?" And Omar explains that his particular style is probably why they moved away from more organic country / Keith style in favor of Victor Feldman. Omar2.mp4
  18. Ok……thank you…… Here, I took the liberty of composing such a letter suggested by Delaware, forthwith. I am quite confident that Delaware Dave could do better, but I think this should be sufficient to arrive at your quest without the concerns of violations of confidentiality agreements by forum users: Good sir or madam, I greet thee well. I compose this missive to inquire whether thou still yet engaged in trade, for I possess an interest in thy wares. No tidings have reached mine ears, hence, prithee, inform me of the manner in which I should proceed. Such knowledge would be received with great gratitude. I remain at thy service, awaiting thy counsel via horseback if thou may. Yours faithfully, Ludo of South Camberton.
  19. Best laid plans are wasted with the new Mayor, 53 years from now, says, "Turn that shit off" and turns the whole assembly into ash and molten metal.
  20. Now they're reporting Hoodie was offered the Atlanta HC. Declined. Speculation is not enough control with him deciding to take a year off and possibly be better positioned next year for a team that would give him more control. Makes sense given that control is a key requirement for him. But at 71/72 sometimes you aren't given another year for your future plans.
  21. No it was Wexler's and his friends: "The two went back and forth working on the material, growing close in the process, and Wexler eventually revealed he had a song he’d started with a few friends that he wanted Joel to hear: “Turn the Lights Back On,” a slow-building track in a waltzing 6/8 meter with a reflective narrator hoping to save a flagging romance. (One of Joel’s most famous songs — the one that provided his nickname — is also in that atypical pop time signature.) To Wexler’s relief, Joel approved of the music. When he finally roped his hero into a recording session and persuaded him to take the mic, Wexler excitedly burst through the studio doors and asked how it felt. “Like singing, I guess,” Joel told him."
  22. Yes, it's one of the more bizarre tales I've ever heard. Billy lets a stranger into his life. They become very close and begin musically collaborating. The stranger springs one of his songs on Billy. Billy doesn't hate it. In Billy terms, this means he loves it. They record it and it becomes a hit. A cynic might think that this was an Op by Columbia/Sony as a cash grab. That's the way it looks to me.
  23. His clue is that the reveal will be surprising to us. That tells me it’s not PCM (clue after I’d guessed Motif).
